Budget News. . .As you may have seen in the news, the California state budget does not look optimistic, andhe potential for future cuts to education are real. In CUSD alone, we are facing an annual

shortfall of between -$2.89 million and -$7.81 million. Currently, the proposed CUSD cuts for 2011-2012 include 90 teacher positions and 27 classified positions, and this includes 6 of our own Garden Gate teachers. Our district is working closely with CEEF and the community toook for ways to bridge these budget gaps. Specific budget information can be found atwww.cupertino.k12.ca.us <http://www.cupertino.k12.ca.us> Volunteer information can be found

at www.ceefcares.org<http://www.ceefcares.org> . As the state continues to be an unreliablepartner when it comes to funding high-quality education in our local schools, the District isconsistently seeking solutions to preserve top quality educational programs and classroomnstruction. That is why the Cupertino Union School District Board of Education recently placedMeasure C, a $125 parcel tax measure, on the May 3, 2011 all-mail ballot, to provide our schools with an additional, stable source of revenue that cannot be taken away by the state.

Walk-Around - Tomorrow - April 15th! The Garden Gate Walk-Around, sponsored by the PTA, is an annual fund-raising event that promotes physical activity. The WAround will be tomorrow, Friday, April 15, and the campus is a buzz with excitement. Pledges may be made on a per-lap basor on a flat-donation basis and are due to classroom teachers tomorrow. Between April 15 and April 29 students will collectdonations. Checks should be made payable to Garden Gate PTA. Go Go Gators!!!

Destination Imagination - Competes at State Level Congratulations to our 2nd and 5th grade Destination Imagination students who advanced to the next level and participated inState Level competitions that took place in Yosemite last weekend! We are proud of you!

Help Garden Gate Help JapanOur “Gator” hearts are heavy for those in Japan! As a school, we are actively doing what we can to brighten the days of Japanese families. Some students have written letters and drawn pictures. Also, through April 15, we are collecting donationshe American Red Cross in the school office as well as in the classrooms (please make checks payable to the American Red

Cross). I'm happy to report that Tuesday's Bake Sale was a great success, bringing in even more donations for our Red Crosbox. Thank you, Gators, for your warm generosity!

Eyes of HopeIn partnership with Vision Service Plan (VSP), CUSD is sponsoring “Eyes of Hope” for the second year. This

eyewear donation program will run from April thru the end of May. Garden Gate is collecting used eyeglassesthe glasses can be recycled and distributed to children and adults throughout the world. The Eyes of Hopecollection box is in the office. We will accept prescription glasses, readers, and sunglasses – in plastic or metframes. Cases can also be used if they are donated with the glasses inside. Thank you for your donation.

GATOR GratitudeOur wonderful Garden Gate parent volunteers were honored at yesterday's Volunteer Luncheon. Thank you for the hours of hard work that you put into making Garden Gate thespecial place that it is for all of our students. We couldn't do it without you!

Traffic During Drop Off and Pick Up When dropping off or picking up your child(ren), please pull forward and stop along the yellow curb. Do not pick up your child

rom the second lane! Also, the yellow curb in the front of the school is for loading or un-loading only - it is not a place to parkyour car. Cars parked along the curb not only back up traffic out onto Greenleaf, but in an emergency would prohibit emergenvehicles from entering. Cars must be parked in designated parking spaces or on the street. Thank you for your support in thmatter.

Spring Break Spring Break is from April 18 to April 22. Wishing you all a restful, safe and rejuvenating week doing all of the springtimeactivities you love most!

Please Do Not Send GlassContainers to School!Student lunches should not include anylass containers, plates or bottles. Thankou for sending your child to school with a

ATTENDANCE…While our state is going through the current budget crisis, we want toemind all parents of our district’s effort to maximize funding from thetate. CUSD’S funding depends on our ADA (average dailyttendance), the actual number of students physically presentt each site on a daily basis. While we understand that atudent cannot attend school because of illness, unfortunately,he state of California does not take that into consideration.

Every year, CUSD loses thousands of dollars of ADA funds ($35 per tudent per day) when students miss school for a reason other than

ness. Parents, please make an effort to take family trips duringhe student’s vacation breaks. If you must take your child on a tripuring the school year, we recommend an Independent Studyontract. The absence must be at least five days and no more thanen days. This is the only way for our district to receive funding whenour child is not in school. For a minimally funded district like

CUSD, every dollar counts!

Visitor’s Badges… We welcome parents on campus. Please sign in the school office

nd wear a name tag while you are on the Garden Gate campus.Your assistance in identifying yourself anytime you are on campus, whether it is to bring lunch or assist in class, will help us maintain aafe environment.

Don’t Lose Your Place at Garden GateWe have noticed that many families aretarting to make travel plans for the summer reak. This is just a reminder that CUSDolicy states that all students must be inlass on the last day of school. Studentssk losing their placement at Garden Gate

School for the 2011 - 2012 school year if hey are not present on the last day of school, June 7th, 2011.

Students must also be present on the first day of the 2011 -012 school year, August 18th,2011.

Updating Residency InformationPlease be aware that district guidelines require that anyhange of residence must be reported to the school office

within ten (10) days. This guideline is in place to ensure thathe address and contact information that the school has on files accurate. This information is crucial and is used to sendfficial school/district correspondence and it is used in thease of an emergency. Failure to provide current residencynformation could result in the immediate withdrawal of your hild. If you have any questions regarding this guideline, lease contact the school office.

Absences, Tardies and AttendanceHotline 408-252-5414 Ext. 6The attendance hotline is available 24 hoursper day, seven days per week. Parentskeeping their children home at the FIRST sign

If your chilwill be late due to a medical/dental appointment, pleaseremember to ask for a note from the doctor indicating theappointment and return it with your child. Lost and FoundPlease check the lost and found shelves located at the bacthe administrative building for your child’s lost items. We hmany lunch boxes, plastic containers, sweaters, hats, etc. may belong to your child. Items that are not claimed will bdonated to a local charity. Thank you! District Health Guidelines
