    Dear Garden Gate Parents,

Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we experienced a district-wide lockdownyesterday. Everyone rallied together and did whatever was necessary to provide restroom breaks andood for students and staff. I am grateful to the staff and volunteers who helped to keep everyone safe

    during this very hectic day.

Yesterday's event illustrates the importance of making sure your emergency contacts are current.

Make sure we have current phone numbers for adults that you authorize to pick your child in caseyou are not available. Be sure to include the name and phone number for any after school careorganization.

n the event of a school emergency, please resist the urge to call the school. We need to keep our phone lines open and utilizstaff we have to keep children safe. Taking the time to answer parents' questions about the event takes our focus off the childf an emergency should occur, we will be in constant contact with our School District and the Sheriff's Department, as we were

yesterday. We will update you via email with updates, as we did yesterday. Please be sure we have your current email addres

Parent Conferences Begin TodayGoal Setting Conferences will occur from October 6-14. All Kindergartners attend school f8:00- 11:25 a.m. (without a lunch period) with the exception of Tuesday, October 11 when t

will be dismissed at 11:10. Grades 1-5 will attend school from 8:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m. (thisincludes a lunch period). Please arrange to have your child picked up promptly.

Goal Setting Conferences are an opportunity to: Share information about student strengths, interests, and needs Establish a caring and collaborative relationship Develop mutual goals for student learning and behavior

Teachers, parents, and students (when appropriate) set goals directly related to state standards for student learning as well asspecific social, emotional, and behavioral goals appropriate to the student and the grade level. They also identify strategies tosupport student attainment of grade level standards. In addition, the goal setting conference held early in the year allows teacand parents to identify students at risk of retention and design interventions to help them meet grade level standards.

    Promotion/Retention Policy

State law requires all school districts to adopt policies regarding the promotion and retention of students. Students are identifieat risk of retention using multiple measures, including results on the STAR (state standardized test), attainment of standards, aother indicators. Students who score below basic or far below basic on the California Standards Test (CST), perform belowbenchmark on district assessments, and/or are not approaching grade level standards are identified as at risk of retention ifmprovement is not shown throughout the year. If a student is in need of additional assistance and resources, the classroomeacher will notify you in writing during the October conferences and work with you to develop a written Student Success PlanSSP) that will include support at home. Cupertino Union School Districts policy ensures that all students have access to the c

curriculum and the opportunity to attain district standards. Students who are not currently approaching the standards will beprovided opportunities to accelerate their growth through interventions in the classroom and strategies at home.Your childs teacher is the best source of information regarding the progress your child is making, as well as specific criteria uso identify student needs. You also may request a copy of the districts promotion/retention policy and administrative regulation

passed by the Board of Education by calling the Garden Gate Office. We value and appreciate your participation in this stronghome/school partnership to support student learning.

Volunteers NeededWe continue to need parents to help manage our parking lot during pick up and dismissal times. Please contact me if you are o help.

PropellersDo you wonder how to connect better with your children? Do you wonder what matters to them, and how you can assist themgrow up to be healthy, caring and responsible citizens? I encourage you to try a "propeller" - a question intended to sparkconversations with your children. Try it around the dinner table tonight!

This week's propeller: Who gives you the most support? How does this person do this?

    Sincerely,Brandi Hucko, Principal
