Six widows, who meet once a month for a Sunday lunch, held a surprise birthday party for one of their members, Marion Ablett, who celebrated her hundredth birthday on Monday 21st September. The group of ladies, all from Bishop Auckland, attended

the Hospital Social Club dance for 25 years until it closed.Because they were all good friends, the ladies, whose average age is 84, decided to set up their own regular day out so that they could keep in touch. Two of the ladies still drive,

so they pick up their friends on the first Sunday of every month and they go out for lunch at a favourite venue. On this occasion, Dorothy Davison, Lily Ingram, Sybil Gibson, Eileen Dowson and Edith Kirtley, laid on a wonderful surprise party for Marion, who was delighted.

Marion Ablett, centre, was delighted with her surprise party, organised by her long-time friends who all meet for Sunday lunch once a month.

College nursery shortlisted for two national awards

Staff at Bishop Auckland College Nursery are cel-ebrating after being short-listed for two prestigious national awards.Jackie Bennett was one of only eight Nursery Manager of the Year finalists in the Nursery World Awards, while the nursery itself was highly commended in the Team Development Award category.Jackie attended a glitzy ceremony at The Lancaster London with colleagues Bev Parkin, Sarah Shepherd and Tracey Dowson to collect the awards. The award citation said: “The arrival of a new manager inspired staff to work together to drive up standards. Everyone was fully engaged in developing a clear vision for the future. Full day workshops and evening training sessions were made available to staff when goals and strategies were clarified. A training programme was devised and funding was obtained for improvements.”Bishop Auckland College is one of the biggest employers in the area and a centre for excellence in providing Childcare &

Education training up to degree level. Its nursery, which is located on the Bishop Auckland campus with its own premises adjacent to the main building, has 25 staff and places for up to 140 children aged from three months to five years, and serves staff, students and the general public.Nursery manager Jackie Bennett said: “The Nursery World Awards, which

have been running for five years, are seen as the top accolades for the sector, so to have been short-listed from hundreds of nurseries eligible to enter is something all the staff here are very proud of.”For more information about the college nursery, visit www.bishopaucklandcol-lege.ac.uk/nursery or email [email protected] or call (01388) 443123.

At around 2pm on the afternoon of 10th August, Wayne John Maddison was seen to enter the Boots Store in Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland, accompa-nied by a female.A short time later CCTV coverage revealed that he had removed a tube of fake tan remover from the shelves and placed it in a carrier bag before leaving the shop.Outside, in the street, he was stopped and arrested for a different theft offence but managed to hand over the carrier bag to the female before being stopped.

The 26 year-old, of Grant Road, Bishop Auckland, had previously used fake tan which had left his hands discoloured and had taken the item on a whim. In defence it was stated that Maddison had received a fixed penalty notice for the theft from another store and hoped that matters would not work against him, as he was soon to have a second interview for employment at a local retail store.Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe imposed a fine and awarded costs and compensation to be paid totalling £225.

Oyez! oyez! Oyez! 18th century Town Criers could well be described as ‘historical newscasters’.They conveyed local news just like Bishop Press does. They also issued warnings and, because most people couldn’t read or write, they were the means of communication. Many local councils reinstated the post of Town

Crier from the mid 1990’s onwards and, as of October 2010, there were 144 of them registered in towns in England and Wales. Table tennis club triumph in debut tournament

In their tournament debut, the newly formed Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club took the Tri Club Cup home, having triumphed over the established Lanchester and Sacriston Clubs.

On Sunday 7th October, Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club hosted the first Tri Club Cup, with teams from Sacriston and Lanchester joining Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club.

The first match was Bishop Auckland vs Lanchester. This was Bishop Auckland’s first tournament since its inception and the nerves did show, however thanks to a team effort Ben Kelly, Tom Whittaker and Zak

Hutchinson all picking up one singles each and one of the doubles to seal a 4-4 draw. Next up was the visiting teams playing off again with the result another 4-4 draw.

So, going into the last match, a win for either team would secure them the title. Things started out evenly with Sacriston taking the first match and Bishop Auckland taking the second before Sacriston pulled out a 3-1 lead. The first doubles was a tipping point and Bishop Auckland came roaring back to pull out a 4-3 lead with Tom Whittaker and Carl Draper picking up wins in their second singles matches. This set up a tense doubles match. After going to 2-0 down, Ben Kelly and Carl draper pulled things level and looked to have the momentum to lift the cup, but it was not to be as Sacriston pulled back to win the doubles and make it another 4-4 draw. The event went down to sets count-back and with a +4 sets average Bishop Auckland brought home the cup.Club Chairman Matthew Porter had this to say:

“Today was a great event. There was lots of good table tennis being played in the right spirit. Everyone played to win but enjoyed themselves and to win the event after only being a club for four months is a fantastic result. “Both other clubs have been running for much longer than us, so this result will set the boys up nicely for making their debut in the National Junior league next month.”If you would like more in-formation about the club, check out their website at www.bishopaucklandttc.webs.com

The amount of material collected for recycling in County Durham has increased by 34 per cent since the introduction of a new collection system.Durham County Council began alternate weekly collections of waste and recycling earlier this year, and early indications show the amount being recycled has already increased sig-nificantly.Figures show that between April and July, household-ers in County Durham recycled 3,965 extra tonnes – the equivalent of 793 extra lorry-loads – compared to same period last year.Based on this increase, the authority is expecting a five per cent increase in the proportion of waste recycled. This means that at the end of 2012/13, residents are expected to have recycled more than 48 per cent of their waste. As part of the changes, almost 190,000 homes received new recycling bins for storing paper, card, plastics, tins, cans,

aerosols and cartons. Glass bottles and jars are still placed in the recycling box for collection. The council is now appealing to residents to check that they are putting the correct items into their recycling bins and boxes.Cllr Brian Stephens, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for neigh-bourhoods and local part-nerships, said: “We would like to thank everyone for all their help in making the change to the new system. The vast majority of residents are using their bins and boxes without any problem and we are extremely pleased with the resulting increase in recycling levels.“However, there are a small number of residents placing nappies, food, pet waste and other non-recyclable items into their recycling bins. These should be put in the rubbish bin.“Putting the wrong items in your recycling bin reduces the value of the materials collected.

New collection scheme boosts recycling rates

Someone will have to remove it by hand at the recycling plant and then it will be sent to land-fill, which means the council has to pay to dispose of it.”Last year, the council paid more than £7.5m in Landfill Tax, with every tonne of rubbish it sent to landfill costing about £100.Over the next three months, the authority will be trying to raise awareness of what can be recycled and where different types of waste and recycling should be placed. In areas where contami-nation is most common, stickers will be placed on bins reminding residents not to put items such as nappies, food leftovers, pet waste and garden waste into their recycling bin. Leaflets outlining ‘what goes where’ will also be delivered through letterboxes. For a guide to what can be recycled, visit www.d u r ham.g ov.u k /w hat-goeswhere.

In what could have easily been seen as a mismatch on paper, this battle between league high flyers Bishop Auckland and basement club Prudhoe proved to be a frustrating encounter. From the off, Bishop Auckland looked more organised, fitter and over-powered the contact area, but a high penalty count left the players, coaches and often spectators scratching their heads in disbelief. With three minutes played, Bishops opened their account with a powerful scrum allowing Mike Ross to outpace the Prudhoe flank from the base to score under the posts, duly converted by Tombling. Bishop Auckland led 7-0.However it was some twenty minutes before the score sheet was troubled again, fly half Tom Burn adding the points after a slick slice inside his opposite number. The penalty count still climbing, Bishops main pressure came from the

referee, with Prudhoe adding little to trouble the defence.14-0 up at half time but thoroughly frustrated, Bishops continued to struggle with the penalty count and now playing up the steep slope, they had to work harder than ever. Great work in the pack from Fletcher and the back row of Nareki, Edwards and Ross kept the game reasonably en-tertaining and eventually Bishop Auckland finally put together a strong passage of play and camped in attacking territory. From a break, scrum half Brabban broke the line and crossed to seal the win, but Bishops saved the best until last. From the restart Bryan Victory served up to Mike Ross who handed off the fly half to break the line. He rode the covering tackle of the full back well and offloaded to Nareki. The Fijiian powerhouse burst through two tackles before the final tackler’s game was ended with

a handoff which was heard back at West Mills, then slickly offloading to Edwards to gain the bonus point. Final score: 24-0Verdict: Neither classy nor enjoyable, but workman-like. Penalties prevented a landslide, but Bishops have class when it counts. They must show better shape against teams who lose structure quickly. The real class of the day lay in the second row with Luke Bryan Victory outstanding and Paul Fletcher a clear man of the match. An un-compromising player, he is in the shape of his life and has a hunger which inspires his team.

The Aces suffered their biggest defeat of the season with a 6-0 loss at home to Newton Aycliffe Youth Eagles. It was a hard fight to get back into the game after conceding three goals in the first half and then three in the second but

the lads battled on till the end. Man of the Match was Dylan Howe.Next came a friendly game off the back of that 6-0 defeat, but the lads didn’t let it get to them and came out fighting with some terrific passing and great corner balls from Ben

Aces recover from big defeatConner and Ryan Byrne which lead to the Aces going 1-0 up through an own goal. Then a great through ball sent Cameron Bass on his way to getting the Aces second goal with a great strike. Man of the Match was Tyler Jackman.
