MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thank you for making Friday night’s Welcome BBQ such a wonderful event. We are a large family and it is occasions such as this that allow us to enjoy some time together. Thank you for showing that you value these opportunities. I look forward to your continued enthusiastic support. Enrolments are now being accepted for 2012 so if you have a child due to commence Prep I encourage you to complete an Application for Enrolment now (Eligible for Prep 2013 – child born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008). You are welcome to join us at our annual School Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 28 February. All children are expected to be in attendance. You can help your child by ensuring they have a ‘rashie’ to swim in and that sunscreen is applied before coming to school. See you there! Regards Peter

URGENT!! - UPDATE OF SCHOOL RECORDS We are still waiting for a number of families to return the report showing all personal family details. Please make any changes needed on the report and return to the classroom teacher TOMORROW 22 FEBRUARY. An excursion and media form is also be enclosed. This needs to be signed and returned together with the report to your classroom teacher. Even if there are NO changes to be made ALL reports & permission forms must be returned by every child. PLEASE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY!!! The following two items listed in my part of the newsletter are a matter of urgency. Many of you are totally ignoring the direction given to you all re the procedures for before and after school drop off and pick up. Please read the following information carefully and take heed:

BEFORE SCHOOL DROP OFF All children arriving at school prior to 8.30am are expected

to go straight to the quad. You are most welcome to sit with your child, however, this must be in the quad area. Waiting with children between the buildings – outside the Prep, Year One and Two classrooms encourages other children to gather in this area – and is a distraction to teachers preparing lessons for the day.

There is no supervision in this area until 8.30am. AFTER SCHOOL PICK UP Likewise, when you pick up your child/ren at 3pm please

wait at the tuckshop end of the quad. Parents socialising outside classrooms from 2.30pm is a great distraction to all the children still working and learning till 3pm each day. Waiting outside the Year 1 and Year 2 rooms before 3pm is unacceptable.

Show responsibility and consideration and follow these

directions for the good of your children. It will be embarrassing for both you and the Leadership Team if we have to come and ask you to move.

VOLUNTEERS

Have you completed a Student Protection Handbook for Volunteers??? If not, you are not eligible to do any voluntary work at the school in any capacity until you have done so. Please pick up a handbook from the front office if you are in need of one. SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL I look forward to catching up with you at our 2012 SFX Swimming Carnival next week. It is always a fantastic day which the children thoroughly enjoy. Please be reminded that it is a normal school day and ALL CHILDREN are expected to remain at the carnival until after presentation. All teams need the support, encouragement and enthusiasm of all team members. Have a good week! Ronnie Wilson

ASH WEDNESDAY 22 FEBRUARY This Wednesday 22 February will begin the Church’s Season of Lent. On Ash Wednesday, Christians have their foreheads marked with ashes. In this way, we acknowledge that we have sinned. We make a conscious decision to turn back to God and to other people. At tomorrow’s General Assembly, there will be an Ash Wednesday Liturgy with the distribution of ashes. Parents and friends are most welcome. If you cannot attend tomorrow morning, there is 7.30pm mass at the Holy Family Church. CARITAS - PROJECT COMPASSION A component of the “Guidelines for the Religious Life of the School” document is Social Action and Justice. The meaning of this component is found throughout the Scriptures and Catholic social teaching. Caritas Australia assists people in need in a variety of countries. There will be a Project Compassion box attached to the Newsletter this week. This is an opportunity for your family to support others this Lent. I ask that as a family, you speak about the importance of supporting others by contributing to Project Compassion over the 40 days of Lent. When returning your box include your child’s NAME and CLASS. YEAR 7 LEADERSHIP PROGRAM – Student & Sport Leaders This afternoon, a group of Yr 7 students were presented with their Student Leader and Sport Leader badges at a special Leadership Assembly attended by our Federal Member for Fadden, Mr Stuart Robert, along with our local member of State Parliament, Ms Peta-Kaye Croft. Following long and extensive learning over the past few weeks, students were invited to nominate for the positions of Student Leader and / or Sport Leader. After voting by Yr 7 students, Student Leaders and Sport Leaders were elected. We thank Mrs Norman, Mr Rees and Mrs Smith for their guidance in the formation of the Student Leaders and Sport Leaders. The Student Leaders will head a number of Committees which are made up of Yr 7 students. It is an expectation that all Yr 7 Students are members of a Committee and serve our School Community to the best of their ability. The following are Committees of which the Yr 7 students will be a member:: Gatherings; Spirit: Communications; Social Justice; Sustainability; Pastoral Care; Liturgy and Media. Names of the Student Leaders and Sport Leaders will be published

in next week’s Newsletter.

Last Monday, the following children attended the District Swimming Carnival at the Southport Pool.

GOLD COAST CATHOLIC YR 7 LEADERSHIP LITURGY The annual liturgy was attended by the following Catholic Schools on the Coast – Jubilee, Guardian Angels, St Vincent’s, St Augustine’s, St Joseph’s, St Brigid’s , St Kevin’s, MaryMount and Assisi. The Yr 7 students from these Catholic Schools came together at the Sacred Heart Church, Clear Island Waters last Wednesday. Fr Tim Harris , Parish Priest of Surfers Paradise presided over this special liturgy and was impressed that all the Yr 7 Catholic school students came to celebrate what it means to be a leader within their communities. Following the liturgy, the students experienced a conversation chaired by Mrs Lonnie Yutland, Teacher/Librarian from St Augustine’s. The panel consisted of three people who are Christian leaders in their particular fields of endeavour - Simone Fraser, a part-time financial analyst and lecturer in corporate law who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. Kaylene Langford, who is the Campus Minister at Marymount College. The third member is Des La Rance, who is a member of the Surfers Paradise Rotary. His first project was making wheelchairs for disabled children in Fiji. More recently he has developed pre-fab buildings for use as homes, orphanages and schoolrooms in Vanuatu, Thailand and Samoa. All of these guest were excellent role models of servant leadership and all come from different walks of life. They were able to explain to the children that each person can be a leader

and display their leadership skills in various ways.

PARISH SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION PROGRAM A reminder that there is a Parent Catechesis meeting scheduled for Monday 27 February at 1pm and repeated at 7.30pm, for parents who who have enrolled their children in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

VIRTUE OF THE WEEK – WELCOMING Last week Ms Cummin’s 4 Red presented the Virtue of Welcoming. To practise being a welcoming person you should

Greet everyone cheerfully with a smile and a name; a good morning or g’day; hello, how can I help you?

Welcome people to join a group or situation

Wink at someone to make their day

All the members of our community are practising being a welcoming person as was evidenced at the Welcome Bar-Be-

Que last Friday night.

FAMILY MASS – 4 March Family Mass provides an opportunity for the children of our parish to be more actively involved in Sunday Mass, thereby making it a more meaningful experience for them. Mrs Maureen Laidler our Music/Drama/Performaing Arts teacher shares her musical talents to prepare the children for these masses. I continue to prepare the readers. I encourage our families to bring their children to the first Family Mass scheduled for Sunday 4 March at 9am. Cheers Jackie Cameron

MESSAGE FROM P & F PRESIDENT

TUCKSHOP NEWS

Last week’s school virtue was welcoming, and I couldn’t think of a better way to finish the week than with the welcome BBQ. It was great to see so many families come together to celebrate and welcome the coming school year together. The night was a huge success and everyone had a good time. The dance floor was pumping and the quadrangle was filled with the sound of chatter. Unfortunately these events don’t put themselves together. They require a lot of organisation and preparation. I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to help set up the tables, chairs, stage and BBQ’s, to fellow committee members for their hard work and support and to all the families who hung around after to pack away. It was great to see such a big display of school community spirit. Our next P & F meeting is Tuesday the 13th of March at 7pm. I would like to welcome everyone to come and join us. If you think you would like to be involved or if you would just like to see what happens at the meetings please come on down. Regards Todd Chapman

I have currently run out of the reusable lunch bags. More are

on order and I expect them to arrive this week.

Attached to the newsletter is some information about the bags. They are available in pink, blue or green edge. The cost of the

bags for 2012 is $8.00 each.

We are well into the first term now and I have to say that I have been very fortunate to have had so many helpers. It has been wonderful to see and meet some new people as well as connect with the regular helpers. Thanks for your support as it

is really appreciated and needed.

On another note please check 2012 menu prices as a lot of orders are coming through with incorrect money. The menu is

available on the school website.

Thursday February 23 Carol Kelly, Clare Cartwright Friday February 24 Carmel Tijsen, Sharon Hood, Danni Chapman, Kim Grobbelaar Monday February 27 Alexandra Bennett, Help Needed Tuesday February 28 Natasha Hunter ( SFX swimming carnival no tuckshop for years 3-7)

All swimmers performed to their personal best and displayed outstanding sportsmanship. However, further congratulations go to Amber Davidson & Bethany Melloy who were very successful in qualifying for the District Swim Team. Amber qualified for 2 events and Bethany qualified for 2. Best of luck girls at the Regional Swimming Carnival on Monday 27 and

Wednesday 29 February.

SFX INTERHOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

8-13 Year old children– TUESDAY 28 FEBRUARY

On Tuesday 28 February the school’s Annual Swimming Carnival will take place at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre. There is no entry fee into the pool for family members and friends. If you can make it, feel free to come along and support your children in their races. There will also be a canteen open on the day if you require food or extra drinks. Please be aware that parking will be located behind the athletics track of the Super Sports Centre. The pool staff on the day will be able to answer questions about where to park. All children are asked to wear a swimming cap which matches their sports’ house if possible (this makes the judges and marshalls’ jobs a lot easier.) Please note no coloured hair spray and no coloured zinc to be worn. Please bring along sunscreen and all tops must be sunsmart eg no singlets or bare shoulders. I am in need of helpers for the Carnival!! i.e. timekeepers, recorders, judges placegetters, marshalls, etc. If you can assist me in any way please leave your name at the office.
