In the beginning, God created Adam—the first human—in His own image. God brought every creature to the human to see if he might find a partner. Nothing was like Adam. God put a deep sleep over Adam and formed a partner for him from his own body. Adam called her Chavah. God placed them in the garden of Eden. The Beginning of EverythingB’REISHEET @ GENESIS 1:1-6:8What’s Happening in the portion

Disciples take responsibility for their actions. When we do something wrong, we say we are sorry. When we

make a mistake, we admit it. We don’t blame others or make excuses.

Have you ever tried playing a game with someone who makes excuses? “The sun was in my eyes,” says the kid who dropped the ball. “I wasn’t ready! I want a do-over!” complains the kid who struck out. It is not fun to play with people who blame others or make excuses.

DON’T BE LIKE ADAM!Sketches When Adam ate the fruit in the garden,

he blamed Chavah, and Chavah blamed the snake! They did not want to take responsibility for their disobedience.

When you do something wrong or make a mistake, take responsibility. Don’t make excuses, and don’t blame some-one else. Say you are sorry. Don’t be like Adam.

the animals, and all the creatures. Almost everything was perfect. Only one thing was missing—someone to enjoy it all.

HaShem took some dust of the ground, and He made it into the shape of a human being. He made the human being like Himself so that the man would be able to think, speak, and choose right from wrong. He breathed His own breath into the human being, and the human came alive. He called the man Adam because He took him from the ground (adamah).

HaShem put the human being into a beautiful garden called Gan Eden. Adam gave names to all the animals, and HaShem enjoyed seeing the names that Adam called things. In the cool part of the day, when the delicious breezes blew, HaShem came to the garden and walked with Adam, and they talked.

Adam loved HaShem, and HaShem loved him, but Adam also searched for a wife. He saw that each animal had a partner, but he was alone. HaShem said, “It’s not good for the man to be alone.” He put the man to sleep. He took out a piece of the man and built it into the shape of a body. When the man woke up, he said, “This is a body made from my body, so I will call her Woman. She will be the mother of all the living (chayah), so I will name her Chavah.”

Adam and Chavah needed nothing at all while they lived in Gan Eden. It was a vast orchard filled with trees bearing delicious fruits. HaShem told them, “Eat from the fruit of all the trees in the garden, but not from the Tree of Knowledge that grows

in the center of the garden. If you eat that fruit, you will surely die.” He planted one tree called the Tree of Life. HaShem wanted them to eat its fruit. Anyone who eats the fruit of the Tree of Life lives forever and never dies. But He warned them, “Do not eat from the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. If you do, you will die.”

The Satan came to the woman in the form of a snake. He asked, “Did God really tell you not to eat the fruit of the trees?” Chavah said, “We can eat of the fruit, but not the fruit that grows in the middle of the garden. If we touch it, we will die.”

The snake tempted her, “You will not die, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God.”

Chavah saw that the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge looked delicious; she ate some. She gave some to Adam, and he ate it, too. Their eyes were opened, just as the snake said would happen, but they did not become like God. Instead, they realized they were naked, like animals, and they felt ashamed. They tried to make clothes from the fig leaves.

He made the human being like Himself so that the man would be able to think, speak, and choose right from wrong.

In the beginning, HaShem created the heavens and the earth. God made everything you see in the whole world: the ground, the land, the trees, the grass, the water, the sky, the sun, the moon, the stars, and even the air you breathe. He made all the animals, too. He made Adam, the very first human being.

When HaShem made the heavens and the earth, at first, everything was formless. It had no shape at all. It was like water. There wasn’t any light, either, because He had not made the light yet. Then the Spirit of God hovered over the dark water like a mother bird hovering over her nest. HaShem said, “Let there be light,” and there was light—a wonderful, bright, divine, and holy light filled everything everywhere. God separated the light from the darkness. He called the darkness nighttime, and He called the light daytime.

God divided the waters above from the waters below to make a difference between the sky and the earth. He separated water from dry ground to make sea and land. He put stars and sun and moon in the sky. He made the plants, the fish, the birds,

In the evening, Adam and Chavah heard HaShem as He walked through the garden. He called out, “Where are you?”

Adam answered, “I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”

HaShem knew they had eaten the forbidden fruit. Adam said, “This woman you made gave it to me, and I ate from it.” The woman said, “This serpent deceived me, and I ate from it.”

HaShem cursed the snake, “Crawl on your belly and eat dust. But one day, the woman’s descendant will crush you.” HaShem said to the woman, “You will have much pain when giving birth to babies.” He said to the man, “You will have to work hard for your food, and you will die and return to the ground.”

HaShem made garments of skin to clothe the man and the woman. Then He said to the angels, “Look, the human beings have become like us, knowing good and evil. Now if he eats from the fruit of the Tree of Life, he will live forever.” He saw that, if Adam and Chavah lived forever, their lives would mean nothing to them, and they would only become more and more evil. It would not be good to let that happen.

HaShem sent them out of the garden. Now that they had learned to sin, He did not want them to eat the fruit of the Tree of Life. He placed an angel with a flaming sword at the entrance of the garden to guard the way to the Tree of Life.

What does Gan Eden look like?

It looks like an orchard, a well-wa-tered garden, and a place of flowing rivers and lovely trees. What does the air smell like? The fragrance of Gan Eden is sweeter than the blos-soming flowers, richer than exotic spices, and more delightful than expensive perfumes. What does it taste like? The fruits and nuts that grow on the trees of Gan Eden are more delicious than any food in this world. What does it sound like? The songs of birds and frogs and all sing-ing things sound like angels, and the angels sound like heavenly choirs. What does it feel like? It feels like being full of life and energy that makes you want to run and jump and dance and sing.

If only there were a way to get back into Eden. HaShem’s angel guards the way. He does not let anyone enter. But when Messiah comes, He will open the way. He will take away the curses, and He will bring us back into beautiful Gan Eden. He will crush the head of the snake, and there will be no more evil. He will cleanse our sins and give us the delicious fruit from the Tree of Life. Then there will be no more death because the Messiah will raise the dead. Then the whole world will be filled with light, as it was at the beginning. The Messiah will be the light of the world, and everything will be very good.
