FWGA Most Improved Golfer

While we are in a holding pattern, let’s get our bag and equipment organized and ready to use at a moment’s notice! If you are like me, my bag is stuffed with anything and everything I could possibly need on the golf course. My clubs are also caked with mud and other substances. First, the bag. This information is taken from an article from the February 2017 issue of Golf Magazine, How to Organize Your Golf Bag in 5 Easy Steps.

February 1, 2020 to April 1, 2020

Step 1: Evaluate Your Mess – Trash, food, too many pencils, do you really need 20 golf balls? Step 2: Consolidate Your Necessities – Group like things together in a separate pile. Step 3: Decide What to Keep – Just one pair of gloves, one towel, etc. Step 4: Choose a Pocket – It’s easier to find things if most used items in the same pocket. Step 5: Order your clubs – now this is personal! I think everyone has a preferred method of order for their clubs.

New Golf Season Rules Review Visualize your favorite course; all those traps, the water, all those times your ball was lost or went out of bounds. Did you apply the rules correctly? I know I didn’t always get it right. This is a great time to review the rules so we are all armed and ready when our season starts again. Go to ForeWomenGolf.org -> Resources -> Rules -> 8 Common Situations. Just click on any of the eight situations to be taken to a short explanation of the situation and option with an illustrative video.

Inspirational and Fun Golf Movies

While we “Shelter in Place”, why not catch up on some of the best golf movies Hollywood has to offer. All of these movies are available on Amazon Prime for a minimal fee. If you have a favorite golf movie or even a favorite instructional video, please send me an email to [email protected] so your list can be shared with all members.

How to Clean and Maintain Golf Clubs

First Submerge the club heads in warm soapy water to soften the mud and dirt. Dawn is a good choice. Careful not to submerge the ferrule part of the hosel in the water. Some clubheads are

Second After grime has softened, clean the club head and grooves on the clubface with a toothbrush. A tee can also be used to remove dirt

hollow so you don’t want water to seep in or cause ferrule movement.

Third Rinse and dry completely with soft cloth. Apply a chrome or metal polish to protect the finish especially if there are scratches or rust areas.

from the grooves. Clean grooves will produce a more accurate spin on the ball.

Fourth Using the warm soapy water, dampen a soft cloth and clean the shaft of the golf club. With graphite shafts, avoid using solvents that can break down the delicate polyurethane encasing. Car wax is

recommended for graphite shafts to protect and shine.

Fifth Golf grips are exposed to water, dirt, sweat, sunscreen, chocolate, parts of your lunch, and all those other “natural” things on the golf course. They should be cleaned with a damp soft cloth or use grip wipes or grip sprays to keep them clean. Grips should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a month. Inspect each grip for wear and replace if needed. The grips are a small investment that can contribute to improved performance on the course. Kepler’s Golf Repair in Walnut Creek is an excellent choice for grip replacement.

Handicap Committee Volunteers Needed

FWGA needs volunteers to form a “Handicap Committee”. A group of 4 or 5 volunteers would be ideal. For an Associate Club, the duties are:

1. Know the Rules of Handicapping 2. Educate and Communicate the Rules of

Handicapping to members 3. Ensure the timely submission of scores 4. Maintain accurate player scoring records, and 5. Coordinate with the NCGA Handicap Department

to resolve any handicap issues.

If interested, please contact our Handicap Chair, Alice Hansen.
