Future Technology Ideas for CIUDecember 6, 2010
What do you think we need to be researching further?
?
Feel free to fill out our feedback form on our website at www.ciu.edu/helpnow and let us know
your thoughts on technology and future needs.
Following are some of the itemswe have been investigating further.
Desktop as a Service
Desktop as a service (DaaS), also called virtual desktop or hosted desktop services, is the outsourcing of a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) to a third party service provider. Typically, DaaS has a multi-tenancy architecture and the service is purchased on a subscription basis.
Considering options for student users in connection with student lab improvements.
Will consider for full time faculty staff based on further research.

Increase/Improved Wireless Infrastructure
Researching Areohive and other wireless solutions.
With the increase of wireless connectivity demands reported from tests as well as survey results from students, we are exploring ways to expand while making the campus wireless infrastructure efficient. Although wired connectivity is still available, we recognize the demand for wireless connectivity in a safe and reliable manner.
Identity Management
Identity management (or ID management, or simply IdM) is a broad administrative area that deals with identifying individuals in a system (such as a country, a network, or an organization) and controlling access to the resources in that system by placing restrictions on the established identities of the individuals. Identity management is multidisciplinary and covers many dimensions
An identity management system refers to an information system, or to a set of technologies that can be used to support the management of identities.
Microsoft Systems Center
Microsoft System Center solutions play a central role in Microsoft's long term vision for helping IT organizations benefit from self-managing, user-centric, dynamic systems. System Center solutions capture and aggregate knowledge about the infrastructure, policies, processes, and best practices so that IT pros can optimize IT structures to reduce costs, improve application availability, and enhance service delivery.
These integrated and automated management solutions enable IT organizations to be more productive service providers to their businesses. Aiming to enable self-managing, dynamic systems, System Center solutions close the gap between development, operations, and IT—connecting people, processes, and tools—by evaluating dependencies and optimizing business process performance from deep inside the operating system, applications, and composite services and workflows in both physical and virtual environments
What is SharePoint?
• What is SharePoint? - A collection of technologies that combines the best features of
email, project planning, calendaring, and office productivity tools, and combines those capabilities with the functionality of the web so individuals located in different geographical locations can collaborate as efficiently as those in the same office.
• What is Collaboration Technology? - A software that enables a group of individuals to achieve a
common goal by facilitating information sharing and communication in one central location.
Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010- A business collaboration platform for the Enterprise and the Web that enables you to connect and empower people through an integrated set of rich features. Working with SharePoint Lists
• A SharePoint lists is a content structure that contains a group of similar items. Most items that are listed can be tracked through an alert system built-in the SharePoint.
• Some examples of lists created in SharePoint:• Announcements• Calendar Events• Links• Tasks• Contacts• Project Tasks• Whereabouts
Working with SharePoint Libraries
• List are great for keeping track of numerous small pieces of information but eventually you will need a place to store documents, photos, forms, and other large amounts of content.
• SharePoint Libraries provide a central location to store all your team files. Instead of trying to locate a file somewhere on the network, you can access it directly from your team site.
Document Library Improvements Ribbon Interface allows features readily available to users Check-out documents locally Offline document libraries in Outlook Major/Minor version tracking Version management Multiple content type support Tree view support
Example of a Document Library
PowerPoint Slide Library
““Tag” and store Tag” and store slides for re-use by slides for re-use by others. Alerts in others. Alerts in PowerPoint if PowerPoint if slides in a slides in a presentation have presentation have been updatedbeen updated
Access the slide Access the slide library from within library from within the presentationthe presentation
What is Versioning?
• Versions are successive copies of a document that are created each time the file is modified. Versioning can be enabled on both lists and libraries.
• Why would you use the Versioning?• Using versions allow a file to be reverted back to an earlier
copy or keep track of the changes being made to the document.(Not Enabled By Default!)
Check In and Check Out Process
• The check in/check out process prevents multiple users from editing the same file simultaneously. Each time a file is checked out, it is locked and other users can read the file, but cannot make any changes.
Communicating with Team Members
• What is a discussion board? A method of
communication that allows individuals to read messages, post messages, and reply to messages in an online forum.
Enterprise Wiki A publishing site for
sharing and updating large volumes of information across an enterprise.
• What is a Blog? A blog, short for “web
log”, is an online journal where the blog owner post topics that can be read and commented on by anyone with access to the site.
SharePoint blogs allow you to post your ideas and provide a forum for readers to leave comments.
My Sites
A custom site for users to customize the content and design, and specify their profile details such as contact information.
A user’s My Site is a secure site which a user is able to define their personal attributes and whether or not these attributes are public or private.
Some of the features: Status Updates Activity Feeds Knowledge Mining(Tags) Bookmarks(My Links) Noteboards(Facebook
Wall) Blogs
