We’re Atkins, one of the world’s most respected design, engineering, and project management firms. We’ve been helping public and private organizations solve complex infrastructure challenges for more than 75 years. Our business is about people—yours, ours, and those who benefit from the services and facilities we help deliver.

Creating resilienceAtkins understands that our clients’ missions evolve with the world’s changing political, social, economic, and environmental climates. To achieve long-term resilience, we provide solutions for effective asset management, natural resource protection, and renewable energy.

Transformation and repurposing are key to resilience. We are partnering with the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY to transform their historic barracks into 21st century facilities. Modernization includes building envelope rehabilitation, roof replacement, exterior stone facade repairs, and new AT/FP-compliant windows, all of which Atkins designed to LEED Silver criteria.

The infrastructure assessments we conduct at U.S. Air Force installations help reduce lifecycle costs for the government by creating better investment strategies for future facility sustainment and restoration.

To help create resilience within our nation’s energy infrastructure, Atkins evaluated maximum storm surge at the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations along the Delaware River in New Jersey. The analyses included data from Hurricane Sandy and other recent storm events to determine surge impacts on the plant sites and surrounding areas. The results helped the Nuclear Regulatory Commission determine design improvements required to license the facilities.

Atkins used high definition laser surveys (top) and infrared thermography (bottom) to perform barracks condition

assessments at West Point, NY. The non-intrusive techniques helped preserve the historical integrity of the facility.

Ensuring safety and security

Forging partnershipsAt Atkins, we know the key to success for large, complex programs is not just effective oversight, but effective collaboration. That’s why we actively partner with all agencies and stakeholders involved in each of the programs we manage.

During master planning for the U.S. Army Warrior Transition Program, we visited each of the 26 participating installations to conduct charrettes with key stakeholders. We took the time to learn about local culture, community goals, environmental concerns, and indigenous construction materials. We combined that information with military guidelines and troop estimates to design facilities that provide nurturing environments where injured soldiers focus on recovery and prepare for a smooth transition back to military duty or civilian life.

Our people are committed to the safety and security of the communities in which we live and work. In addition to designing secure facilities and infrastructure, we develop innovative technologies that help keep people out of harm’s way.

To help accommodate the growth of the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP), we provided full architecture-engineering design services for a new, 250-agent USBP station and collocated checkpoint facility in Comstock, Texas. To ensure the safety of agents working at the station, the facility was designed according to USBP physical security requirements and to meet ballistic and forced entry standards established by the Diplomatic Security Bureau and the U.S. Department of State.

A changing climate means that fl oods may impact larger areas in the future. Through our R&D program, Atkins developed StormCaster, a web tool for realistically projecting storm activity based on the effects of climate change. StormCaster integrates climate change projections from multiple climate science centers around the world, with on-the-ground historic fi eld data to produce a 15-minute storm forecast that can be used to estimate fl oodplain changes.

We keep travelers safe and increase airport and national security with a biometrics screening system that matches the identity of individuals to their boarding passes. We designed and successfully implemented the system at London’s Heathrow Airport where it has safely processed millions of passengers.

Protecting our environment

The future of our environment depends on what we do today. We help our clients fi nd low-carbon solutions through environmental consulting services; sustainable planning and design; and energy effi ciency audits and strategies.

We designed and constructed the restoration of a 4-mile beach and dune system at Anastasia State Park in Florida. The restoration helps protect the park’s rich ecosystem and abundant wildlife.

Although diffi cult to attain for industrial facilities, Atkins met LEED Silver criteria with our design of the F-22 munitions complex at Hickam AFB in Hawaii. The design incorporates sustainable elements that reduce water usage by 56%, energy usage by 19.9%, and create an energy cost savings of 21.2%.

Our sustainability experts provide retro-commissioning services at Air Combat Command facilities nationwide. The performance tests we run at each

building identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and improve comfort for the people who work there.

Atkins leads the consortium selected by the European Union to make sustainable energy more readily available to developing nations. The consortium supports 24 African countries by developing projects in the areas of rural electrifi cation, renewable energies, energy effi ciency, and energy savings.

Countries around the world use Atkins to help keep people and assets on the move. We design the facilities, infrastructure, and technologies that meet the growing demands of a modern, mobile society.

At the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Atkins led the design of a new 7 million ft2

passenger terminal and associated buildings. The new airport complex will help accommodate growing religious tourism to the holy city of Mecca. Approximately 2.5 million people visit Mecca during the Hajj period alone, and this is projected to rise to 4 million in the next few years.

Atkins helps communities quickly and safely evacuate during tropical storms and tsunami events. The Mass Management System, developed in partnership with USACE, uses modeling that incorporates social and economic factors, and event-specifi c data to accurately estimate relocation clearance times.
