We have been busy with different projects painting or making lady bugs and butterflies. The Food Club, that meets every Wednesday, is always a fun activity with Bunny leading the group. Everyone especially enjoys getting to eat what they made later in the afternoon. This month they made some wonderful hand-make desserts that included Hawaiian cake, chocolate Oreo whipped dessert, a carrot cake, and even a veggie “pizza.” The participants enjoy Bingo and Jingo, especially when there are prizes at stake. At the moment we have been learning about bees. We’ve read a book about bees and seen an educational Nova DVD about bees “Tales from the Hive.” We plan on visiting the Lakeshore Museum Center in May to see The Secrets of Bees exhibit. The participants enjoy the Walking Club every day after lunch and look forward to getting outside as the weather allows. Volume 13 Issue 5 May 2018

We are enjoying spring here at DayBreak. We celebrated with a Good Friday service and party complete with a variety of food that was enjoyed by all of the participants and guests. Our guest list included some of the residents of Agape Home and Agape Home at Blueberry Fields. Anne Rorem, Resident Life Coordinator of both assisted livings, brought them on our DaySpring Services bus. Everyone enjoyed singing along with Pastor Russ Damm as he played the piano. We also had several volunteers come and lead singing and play the guitar. Thank you to everyone that joined us in this very special celebration. Barbara LaFever Program Coordinator

April was a great month at the apartments! We started off with a breakfast trip to the new IHOP on Harvey! Everyone approved. A few days later, we took a trip to Frederik Meijer Gardens, which you can check out on page three. It was a lot of fun, despite the heat in the greenhouse! We made flowing rainbows for Spring and even went bowling in the hallway.

Towards the end of the month we took a trip to Lake Michigan to watch the sunset and take some time to stargaze. It was wonderful! The skies stayed clear and the moon was bright. It was the latest we’ve stayed out for an activity, but everyone agreed that it was worth it! The sunset was so gorgeous that we just had to include a photo for you.

To end the month we went to Kirby Grill, which

was wonderful. Many of the tenants hadn’t been

there in several years, so it was fun to see their

reactions to the ways it has changed. We’re really

excited for May and all of the activities that we have

planned. It’s going to be a great start to summer!

Life at Our Independent Living Apartments

Our birds have been a big

hit lately! I thought it would

be nice for you to learn a

little about our bird family

here at DaySpring. We

have many different birds

in our aviary, of all

different colors and sizes!

Our aviary was built by Living Designs, Inc. in

South Dakota. They come in quarterly for

maintenance which includes examining and

medicating birds, disinfecting, replacing

bedding, exchanging birds, restocking

supplies, and analyzing trends in our aviary.

They also educate us on proper care and

spend time answering all of the questions from

our residents who stop by during maintenance.

Next time you’re at DaySpring, stop by the

aviary to watch and listen to our beautiful birds!

Notice how the doves have young twins.

Aviary Action Butterflies are Blooming!

Many of us from both DaySpring Assisted Living and the Independent Living Apartments spent an afternoon at Frederik Meijer Gardens for their Butterfly Exhibit! We had such a wonderful time in their giant 85 degree tropical covered salon, with thousands of butterflies surrounding us. There are over 60 different species of butterflies at the exhibit, from all over the world! We enjoyed walking by and sitting around the waterfall, stream, and colorful plants while butterflies gracefully fluttered around us.

We had a beautiful month at DaySpring! We made it through the icy weather and have loved both the warm and the rainy days! What a blessing it is to finally be out of winter. Many of us are spending our afternoons out in the courtyards, enjoying the sunshine and cool breeze while the grass and flowers begin to flourish around us.

A couple highlights from this month: Pet Therapy, of course, as well as Ice Cream Social and Popcorn in the Soda Shop are always a hit! We also had Culinary Exploration this month with Amy, our Food Service Coordinator. We learned about and tried all sorts of different textured foods. It was quite fun and tasty too! Some of us went to Frederik Meijer Gardens, which has its own section in the newsletter. It’s finally nice enough to take more trips with the bus, so you’ll see more outdoor activities coming up.

Everyone is ready for warm days to spend outside. It’s time for us to plant our gardens in the courtyards, and our birds are getting more active too. We’re excited for May and the sunshine it will bring!
