DKI APCSS hosted several significant events in Honoluluthis past month, including the “National SecurityCoordination in Southeast Asia” workshop and the“ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting-Plus ExpertsWorking Group.” We welcomed over a dozen alumniback to the Center as participants in these events. Inaddition to these proceedings, we also kicked-off theAdvanced Security Cooperation Course 17-2, where over100 officials, including five alumni from across theregion, joined us for our five-week flagship course.

In partnership with U.S. ForcesKorea, we hosted our first-ever, international MobileAsia-Pacific OrientationCourse in Seoul, Korea.Nearly 100 Fellows from fourcountriesparticipated in thecourse.Following the

commencementceremony, we hosted an alumni event to honor theKorea DKI APCSS Alumni Association as theAlumni Association of the Year for 2016, and toconnect our Korean alumni with the newestgraduates of the mobile course.

We hosted a maritime capacity-building workshopin Japan that focused on synergistic, maritimecapacity-building opportunities among foursignificant maritime powers: Japan, India,Australia and the United States. Following theworkshop, we hosted an alumni event for allalumni in the Tokyo area.

In Myanmar,DKI APCSSProfessorsMiemie Byrd andSaira Yaminestablished thefoundations for asuccessfulsecurity-sectordevelopmentworkshop by coordinating with the officials fromcivilian and military organizations that are scheduledto send representatives to the event. Professors Byrdand Yamin also delivered presentations at theInternational Relations Department entitled “TeachingMethods for Critical Thinking” and Conflict

Resolution Frameworks for Peace Processes”respectively. They also enjoyed meeting with manyDKI APCSS alumni.

Myint Myint Moe (Myanmar),ASC14-3, completed her FellowsProject, elevating the role of womenand civil sector organizations in securityby institutionalizing leadership trainingin the government. She was responsible

for training over 1,300 personnel, improving their

knowledge, skills and capacity regarding humanrights, women’s rights and child rights.

Lieutenant Colonel Saif Ullah(Bangladesh), CSRT15-1, completedhis Fellows Project, getting his proposalsubmitted and approved to implement acounter-terrorism training module intothe existing Army formation-level

training program.

Saksovuthy Say (Cambodia),CSRT15-1, completed his FellowsProject to enhance efforts in counteringterrorist financing in Cambodia. Hecoordinated with the FinancialIntelligence Unit to issue a regulation

that freezes the financial assets connected to terrorism.

Sarangoo Dambajav (Mongolia),ASC15-1, completed her FellowsProject, writing a paper to reduce airpollution in Mongolia. This was anurgent and important topic for thepeople living in the Mongolian capitol

who suffer from the negative impact of using coal toheat, cook and survive during the seven-month coldseason.
