The Sheikh went to St Thomas school and did his tertiary studies in religious sciences at the Islamic university of Madinah in Saudi Arabia. He has been the senior Imaam for the past 21 years at Gelvan Park. He also belongs to UUCSA (the United Ulema Council of S A) as well as belonging to international Palestinian organiza- tions and some international donor establish- ments. The Sheikh began by informing us of his Syrian trips and how he had found his purpose in life. What is our purpose in life? It is important for us each to know what our mission is. The crisis in Syria is one of the worst in the 21 st century. He did not want to discus the politics of the matter, but gave some facts for reflection: 4 million refugees are in five countries around Syria - Lebanon hosts 1,2 million; Jordan has 650 000 refugees; Turkey 1.9 million refugees; Iraq 250 000; and Egypt hosts 133000 refugees. He witnessed many atrocities which saddened him greatly. More than a quarter million people have been killed. He said that refugees are not allowed back to their own countries once they have left. Together with others the Sheikh has organized many urgently needed mobile hospitals and clinics; schools have been erected and supplies have been sent to Syria — all through the kind donations made by many local companies and people. The leadership shown by the Sheikh as an ambassador for those suffering, dying and in dire plight, is evident in his relentless efforts to bring about peace and harmony. In addition to the physical needs, there is an enormous need to educate the public on the sanctity of buildings in the areas being bombed, especially the churches, synagogues, and mosques, to maintain the local cultural and historical significance. The Sheikh says it is heartbreaking to see children orphaned and starving. He has also helped establish 2 bakeries in Turkey, from where thousands of loaves of bread are distributed daily to the homeless.

ANNIVERSARIES

We had a most interesting guest speaker today in the person of Sheikh Shamiel Panday. The Sheikh went to St Thomas school and did his tertiary studies in religious sciences at the Islamic university of Madinah in Saudi Arabia. He has been the senior Imaam for the past 21 years at Gelvan Park. He also belongs to UUCSA (the United Ulema Council of S A) as well as belonging to international Palestinian organiza-tions and some international donor establish-ments.

The Sheikh began by informing us of his Syrian trips and how he had found his purpose in life. What is our purpose in life? It is important for us each to know what our mission is. The crisis in Syria is one of the worst in the 21st century.

Member’s Matters

Roy Snyman told us that:

‘There is a real magic in enthusiasm; it speaks to the difference between Mediocrity and Accomplishment’!

Thought for the Day

Eric Kassa, the Secretary of the Rotary Club of Port Gentil Ozouri, in Gabon, was a guest of ours today. Eric was on holiday in Port Elizabeth, and - being a young man - it was his first visit to any Rotary Club other than his own.

He said he really enjoyed his time with us all. He especially enjoyed hearing the guest speaker, as he says they very seldom have guest speakers at their club. When I asked what they do at their meetings, he said they have training.

Each week a different Rotarian does some training on a different aspect of Rotary. They must be very knowledgeable by now!

Lucille McGahey,

Sponsored by Mike Stapp and

Seconded by Bertie Kommel

has applied for membership of the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth.

We have all met Lucille over the past number of

months when she has been our guest at Rotary meetings.

Her vocation is

‘Medical Products’

If anyone has any problems with Lucille being accepted as a member into our club, please
