Friday September 26 th Casual Day- Gold coin donation Early Dismissal 2:10pm Dear Families, As this is the last edition of the Yakka for Term 3, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you an enjoyable holiday with your children. The break will be an opportunity to re-charge energy levels and hopefully shake off term sicknesses that many of our students have been battling. During the holidays I am hoping you can begin reflecting on future changes in the Australian Curriculum implementation that will affect Fairview Park. From the beginning of 2016, all DECD sites are required to ensure students are learning a specific language from reception to year 7. The Music and Language program offered at Fairview Park reception to year 4 will need to be modified in readiness for this change. We have been fortunate to have the opportunity for our students to experience a range of languages through our current program. Hopefully this will support us when choosing our future language. Staff have taken the opportunity to look at our specialist learning areas to see how we could incorporate this change. Early discussions have resulted in the idea of having The Arts (music, drama, media arts, visual arts and dance) and our chosen language as our two specialist learning areas for 2016. Physical Education and Science (which are currently specialist areas) would be covered by class teachers. We are inviting students and families to be part of the discussion and planning. Consideration of a language is effected by the language offerings of local high schools, particularly Banksia Park International High school, as this is the site our students are zoned to after their primary years. We are also looking at quality teaching to ensure we can introduce a program with a teacher who can engage students across all years and link their language learning to other curriculum areas. Prior to Music and Languages at Fairview Park we had Japanese as our LOTE (Language other than English) subject. Feedback from our last whole school review showed that most students did not continue with Japanese in high school and families were concerned about the difficulty of learning a complex language (symbols and words), particular in the early years, while English skills were being consolidated. We had a range of teachers depending on availability. This inconsistency was also reflected in our survey. Our current program was introduced to give students exposure to a range of languages. Although this has been very successful it only provides a ‘snapshot’ of each individual language and doesn’t meet DECD requirements for the future. We are looking at making 2015 a transitional year to trial a set language R – 7. Our aim is to continue incorporating music and culture initially. Initial conversations have explored at German, Spanish, Italian, French and Japanese. I welcome you to join the conversation and chat to me, a member of Governing Council or teaching staff. Survey information will also be requested. I would like this decision to reflect input from our whole community so we can meet this required change with a plan that ensures success for our students. Early Dismissal 2:10pm Dear Families,

As this is the last edition of the Yakka for Term 3, I would like to take the opportunity

to wish you an enjoyable holiday with your children. The break will be an opportunity

to re-charge energy levels and hopefully shake off term sicknesses that many of our

students have been battling.

During the holidays I am hoping you can begin reflecting on future changes in the

Australian Curriculum implementation that will affect Fairview Park. From the

beginning of 2016, all DECD sites are required to ensure students are learning a

specific language from reception to year 7. The Music and Language program

offered at Fairview Park reception to year 4 will need to be modified in readiness for

this change. We have been fortunate to have the opportunity for our students to

experience a range of languages through our current program. Hopefully this will

support us when choosing our future language.

Staff have taken the opportunity to look at our specialist learning areas to see how

we could incorporate this change. Early discussions have resulted in the idea of

having The Arts (music, drama, media arts, visual arts and dance) and our chosen

language as our two specialist learning areas for 2016. Physical Education and

Science (which are currently specialist areas) would be covered by class teachers.

We are inviting students and families to be part of the discussion and planning.

Consideration of a language is effected by the language offerings of local high

schools, particularly Banksia Park International High school, as this is the site our

students are zoned to after their primary years. We are also looking at quality

teaching to ensure we can introduce a program with a teacher who can engage

students across all years and link their language learning to other curriculum areas.

Prior to Music and Languages at Fairview Park we had Japanese as our LOTE

(Language other than English) subject. Feedback from our last whole school review

showed that most students did not continue with Japanese in high school and

families were concerned about the difficulty of learning a complex language

(symbols and words), particular in the early years, while English skills were being

consolidated. We had a range of teachers depending on availability. This

inconsistency was also reflected in our survey. Our current program was introduced

to give students exposure to a range of languages. Although this has been very

successful it only provides a ‘snapshot’ of each individual language and doesn’t

meet DECD requirements for the future.

We are looking at making 2015 a transitional year to trial a set language R – 7. Our

aim is to continue incorporating music and culture initially. Initial conversations have

explored at German, Spanish, Italian, French and Japanese. I welcome you to join

the conversation and chat to me, a member of Governing Council or teaching

staff. Survey information will also be requested. I would like this decision to reflect

input from our whole community so we can meet this required change with a plan

that ensures success for our students.

Warm Regards,

Vanessa Mortimer
