Well what a fantastic 2018 we’ve had at Alice Outcomes. The students and staff have been involved in numerous projects as well as

completing much high quality work for Year 10, Year 11 / Stage 1 and Year 12 / Stage 2 courses

One of the biggest highlights has been the school project in developing, building and growing a vegetable garden for our Stage 1 Food and

Hospitality students as well as daily eating. This was a mammoth task, as teacher Yvonne and her students in the Bushmob section of the

school had to buy the materials, build the three raised garden beds and shovel tons of soil in. This was where the rest of the school got

involved and over a few days most students had helped out making it a truly communal activity. Once this was completed the students

then got to shop for the seedlings and again everyone got involved in the planting. We have zucchinis, cabbage, kale, tomatoes, and

strawberries ready for harvest.

Not to rest on their laurels, Yvonne and her students designed a bush tucker garden for the front of the school. One significant part of the

garden is the path that allows the students to walk around and harvest the bush tucker. The path is made of individual pavers that all

students had the opportunity to make. The staff even got involved and made individual ones as well. The front of the school currently has

trenches around the beautiful tree and is ready for the footings to be laid. There will be a bench seat around the base of the tree to allow

students to relax in the area, which teacher Marg and students are designing and making out of pallets. The final part of the plan will

include three murals that will hang off the fence to ensure that there is some privacy. We are really excited about this development of the

outside spaces at Outcomes.

As well as completing numerous subjects towards their NTCE, a group of 8 students opted to be part of the Motoscouts programme. This

programme has provided the students with the opportunity to gain numerous qualifications as well as develop their leadership skills. So far

they have gained their White Card, as well as their Senior First Aid and Food Handling certificates to name a few. They also have got their

L Drivers Licenses and will be able to complete their first driving lessons. At the moment they are working through the competencies to

gain at Certificate I in Auto Mechanics. I believe they have been repairing a car so that they can drive that as well. I have been truly

inspired by these students who have embraced this opportunity to develop some skills and knowledge that they would never have thought

about at the beginning of the year.

Like the students at the main campus the students at Outcomes are working hard to complete their subjects and the staff are providing the

intensive support to ensure this happens. Outcomes is a unique place that allows students to work at their pace to achieve their individual

goals.

Stage 2 Society and Culture Fast Fashion Waste Display

During the last week of school in Term 3, the Stage 2 Society and Culture students visited Yepernye Shopping Centre and set up a stall

with visual, written and verbal information for passing shoppers to look at and interact with on how to reduce ‘fast fashion’ waste.

The class created a display, which included activities such as making a no-sew bag out of old tee-shirts and drink cozies out of socks,

and a capsule closet matching game that challenged people to create as many different outfits as possible out of a limited number of

clothing items. Photos of finished products and display were taken, and many people stopped by to check it out.

Brianna and Horiana did a fantastic job in spreading their messages and in representing the Centralian Senior College community. We

are very grateful to Yeperenye Shopping Centre for letting us use their venue, and to the public for stopping by for a chat and to learn

about fast fashion waste. Emma Forrester - Society and Culture Teacher

This might look like any other Physics unit on Newton’s Laws of motion in a Year

10 class. Annie and Anastasia working thoroughly through a problem related to

Newton’s Second Law of Motion. Together with the Year 10 class we looked at

the steps, layout and sySTEAMatic solutions of several scenarios. However, this

group of enthusiastic learners did not stop there, they stepped out and took the

plunge to solve a problem each on the board for their classmates. It takes a bit

of guts to put yourself out there and share with others the learning journey we

are all on. These ladies showed their stuff.

But that is not all…. If I tell you that all this learning, all this fun, all this trying out

your skills happened during Lesson 6 on Tuesday in my science class. This is a

tribute to the enthusiastic learners that have made 2018 in Science Year 10

absolutely wonderful and full of discovery. Together we did not just discover

knowledge, but also discovered their own ability to challenge themselves and their views on the world of Science in a totally new way.

This has left me excited to see what each of them will accomplish in the next two years of high school here at Centralian Senior College.

All the best to our students for 2019. Eunice De Kock - Mathematics and Science Teacher

LifeJourney and the Northern Territory Department of Education delivered the first Future Careers in STEAM series at Centralian Senior

College on Tuesday 16 October, introducing our Year 10 students to exciting careers pathways in the fields of Science, Technology,

Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM). Students were introduced to careers in emerging technologies through an exciting range of

immersive workshops led by leading education experts. The program also aims to build capacity through professional learning for teachers

and school leaders with the latest resources and information on offer.

The Future Careers in STEAM series aims to promote local STEAM career pathway and tertiary opportunities in the Northern Territory.

The series has been prompted by the global STEAM skills shortage and a call to action by Australia’s Chief Scientist to prepare the next

generation of Australians for the jobs of tomorrow.

Immersive workshops were led by industry professionals

and education experts in exciting fields including robotics,

drone technology, engineering and cybersecurity.

Presenters include international cyber security education

On Friday 28 September (last day of Term 3) the SRC organised a special afternoon in collaboration with

Headspace Day 2018. There were two themes for the day ‘add a little colour to your day’ and ‘Wear Your Footy

Team colours’ where there were prizes for best dressed. The afternoon consisted of a free BBQ lunch for all, a

photo booth with an Instagram frame, a fun basketball competition and the last lesson where Headspace staff and

SRC went around to classes to discuss what services they offer, what age they cater for, how they can help you

and how they help youth. The afternoon gave great awareness of youth mental health resources to us all.. Thank

you to all staff and students that lent a hand.

SRC Best Colour Awards - Students: Marcita Dougherty (Year 11) and Tatiana Jermacans (Year 12)

Staff: Emma Finnigan (Flower Lady), Nikki Bennett (Rainbow Lady), and Vicky Goude (honourable mention).

Gabe’s central message is “Live Your Dream” – a great match for Polly Farmer Foundation’s Secondary School Program, “Follow Your

Dream”. He asserts that education and motivation are the keys to overcoming all barriers. Gabe says “Go for it!”

On September 20 Polly Farmer students from Centralian Middle School and Gillen Primary joined our Centralian Senior College Follow

the Dream students for afternoon tea before attending Gateways for what turned out to be a capturing presentation. Thanks to the cooks

and drivers!

Gabe is an engineer, an educator and a motivational public speaker. For 90 minutes he captured the minds of our students aged 10 to 18

(and adults) with his tales of NASA programs and the challenges of space travel. The necessary training to prepare for being weightless in

space was one example of the persistence needed to be successful.

Even the adults took part in several COUNTDOWNS 10, 9, 8

…. as he captured the excitement of space launches.

Anyone wishing to keep in touch with Gabe’s events will find

current news and information at www.educatemotivate.com.

An interesting afternoon, well supported by our Polly Farmer

students. Well done all.

Hi one and all. In our Integrated Learning Girls Academy class this term we have been very busy.

Our girls have been mentoring and playing host to our up and coming future students, Bradshaw Primary School’s Year 5/6 class.

During these classes we have been showing them how to do silk painting / printing onto silk scarfs with the whole class having input into

what will be on the scarfs through discussion and drawing. As a class we have also been over to Bradshaw and participated in classes

over there. All the girls have enjoyed their time together and have benefited in so many ways. This type of interaction / connections will

make it easy in future years for students to come here as they will have already made connections throughout the College with both staff

and other family members.

We have also been busy making some quilt wall hangings. Each student has been doing a panel which will take pride and place on the

walls of the College for a long time to come. We hope to have these wall hangings completed in time for the Twilight Festival for

everyone to enjoy.

Well done all involved, it has been a great term.

Several of our Year 12 students recently entered a national Modern History Teacher’s Association competition recently. The tasks they

chose to enter were their multi-modal presentations on an aspect of the Cold War.

Evie Brash won first prize for her engaging and insightful piece on propaganda and popular culture during the Cold War. The judges loved

it and commended her on her high level thinking and comprehensive research. Congratulations Evie!

Here are some screen shots from her photo-story.

Learning and reviewing and preparing for examinations?

Learning tip – juice and fruit enable a calm working brain for better memory and thinking. Processed foods, especially if sugary, provide

instant energy and when aided by caffeine laden drinks create an agitated state reducing chances of good concentration for learning.

Finally – study in bursts of twenty minutes with movement in between

During the October school holidays, six students from the VET Certificate III Applied Languages – Arrernte class travelled to Canberra for

a week of work experience organised by the Alice Springs Language Centre. The students, who are learning about translation and inter-

preting Arrernte language for the workplace, spent time working in the archives at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and visited local Canberra attractions.

Each day the students spent time working in the archives at AIATSIS and were able to participate in tours of the institute as well as visited

the Film and Sound Archives. Many students were able to find books, articles and films from their family members which was a very

special experience. The students were required to complete a presentation as an assessment task for their Certificate III Applied

Language course.

Whilst in Canberra, the students worked on translations of native plant names in the Red Centre Garden display at the Australian National

Botanic Gardens and were also filmed speaking Arrernte at Questacon for the United Nations.

The group spent time exploring Canberra, visiting Black Mountain Telstra Tower, Parliament House, Zoo and had a go at ice skating. They

also participated in tours at the National Museum and National Gallery.

Overall the trip was a huge success. It was enormously valuable for our students to practice their language skills and to be able to

showcase the Arrernte language on a national scale.
