Message from the Pastor

My Dear Friends,

This Wednesday, September 23rd, is not only the feast day of a most powerful saint, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, but it also marks the beginning of the Forty Days for Life, which was started many years ago to prayerfully witness to life for the unborn, particularly against Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics. There have been thousands of babies saved and many conversions that have happened over the years because of the prayerful presence of so many people who recognize the need for so many of us to defend the life in the womb, to work towards an end to legalized abortion, and to be there for the mothers who decide to keep their baby.

One of the most egregious and despicable attacks from the certain people who defend their support for politicians who keep abortion legal is that pro-life people are really only pro-birth people; that unless they support other “political causes” they cannot be truly pro-life. I have never met a person in the pro-life movement or at the March for Life every January in Washington, DC who only cared about the birth of the child. It is a rationalization used by otherwise intelligent people to justify their support for those who advocate publicly for abortion, usually because those who support Roe v. Wade and packing the court with pro-abortion judges are in the pockets of the big business called Planned Parenthood. As Abby Johnson, a former director of a Planned Parenthood clinic and author and inspiration for the book and movie Unplanned, has admitted, Planned Parenthood is in the business of making money, in which they make over one billion dollars every year. Yet, they still insist, even though they make over a billion in revenue, of which 528 million is from the government, that they need that 528 million from us, the taxpayers, to promote their abortion business. Sadly, 45 million dollars of that revenue goes back into the coffers of the politicians in order to assure that a. abortion stays legal, and b. that they still put Planned Parenthood’s 528 million in the congressional budget. In other words, the politicians are bought and paid for through blood money.

This is why Forty Days for Life is so vital and important for the pro-life cause. It starts with the individual, one heart and one heartbeat at a time. A young woman I know from my previous assignment is a freshman at UConn. She has just been named as the president of the Students for Life at UConn. She was exposed to the pro-life cause at Two Hearts Crisis Pregnancy Center in Torrington, as well as when she attended the March for Life in Washington, DC and the many opportunities we provided to bring the pro-life message to the parish and faith formation. She also defended the pro-life position at her local high school, which was hostile towards any dissenting view concerning abortion. Sadly, your children and grandchildren are not hearing an alternative view in their junior high and senior high school classes.

Forty Days for Life supports the need for prayerful witness and to share the pro-life view with love and not condemnation. Love is what changes hearts and minds. I pray every day that all of our politicians who support keeping abortion legal, especially up to moment of birth, and support the repeal of the Hyde Amendment will have that conversion in their hearts and minds and once again be a voice for the most vulnerable. Please consider helping us at St. Katharine Drexel be a witness for life for not only the next forty days but for every day.

God bless Fr. John

A Note from the Organ Bench...

Friends,

The past few weekends we definitely saw some new faces return to Mass for the first time. We welcome each of you back and thank you for worshipping with us! A reminder that if you need a Pew Missal to please see me before or after Mass for your personal copy. We definitely have extras, so don't hesitate to ask for your copy today. There is no charge for your own copy of the 2020 Missal; it's our gift to you for the remainder of the liturgical year. In the next few weeks, the 2021 Pew Missal (cycle B) should arrive. To help offset the cost as we anticipate you each will receive your own personal copy for individual use again, we will be asking for a small offering per book. The 2021 edition is beautiful and it's a lovely book to use both at Mass and for daily prayer and reflection at home. More information about reserving your copy will be coming soon.

May God Bless your week! -Lou

2021 Mass Intention Book Opening This year, due to COVID-19, our Mass Book opening will not be handled in the same manner as in previous years. To limit in person contact, we ask that you CALL the office and not come into the building unless absolutely necessary. If you do come into the office, a mask is required. You may arrange Masses during office hours by calling 860-224-2411. Due to the limited number of Masses available, only two Masses per person may be arranged at one time. We also make use of a provision in Canon Law that allows us to

have one Mass per month offered for “collective intentions” or multiple intentions, so as to accommodate more requests. The suggested stipend for each Mass is $25 for Saturday Vigils, Sundays and Holy Days. The suggested stipend for weekdays is $20. SStipends may be mailed or dropped in the collection basket and must be remitted within one week of arrangement, placed in a separate envelope marked “Masses.” In addition to scheduling your Mass, you may also arrange for any of the following: Candles - $15, Flowers - $35 or Altar Bread and Wine - $25. Please note that we will need a separate check for Masses only. Candles, flowers and altar bread and wine may be combined in one check. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Archdiocese of Hartford 2020 Traveling Rosary Congress

The Archdiocese of Hartford is hosting a Traveling Rosary Congress during October, the month of the Most Holy Rosary, Saturday, October 3 through Friday, October 9.

A Traveling Rosary Congress is seven days of around-the-clock Eucharistic Adoration and Hourly Rosary, with each day hosted at a different parish in the archdiocese, in response to Our Lady of Fatima’s call to conversion, consecration and prayer. Host parishes will offer Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with the rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy prayed aloud at the beginning of each hour, followed by silent prayer for the remainder of the hour. An Opening Mass for the Rosary Congress will be held on Saturday, October 3 at 4:15pm at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair will celebrate a Closing Mass for the Rosary Congress on Friday, October 9 at 7:00pm at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. For more information, go to www.rosarycongressusa.org and click on “Hartford, CT” to see a complete listing of The Traveling Rosary Congress locations in the Archdiocese of Hartford and to schedule an hour of Eucharistic Adoration.
