press

The Fresnel Light is the newest addition to the collection of Studio Dirk Vander Kooij. The light is the perfect combination of avant-garde technology, sustainability and poetic beauty.

The Fresnel Light has been created with a custom-made robot, resulting in an industrial looking pendant lamp. The use of transparent plastic of old CD’s and the intricate line structure, resembles glass.

The inspiration for this light fixture is the Fresnel lens. This lens was developed by the French physicist and engineer Augustin-Jean Fresnel at the beginning of the 19th century. It was revolutionary for its reduction in mass and volume of the material required. The result is a light-weight lens with a high luminous efficiency. Since its introduction this lens is used in lighthouses, simple hand-held magnifiers and in equipment for photography.

Layers play an important role in all of Dirk’s designs. The visible layers create the shape of the object and show the way it has been produced. This is a deliberate choice: “The new generation of 3D-printers create a merely smooth material, while I actually like this low-resolution structure.” In the Fresnel Light the layers create a beautiful sight but also have a very practical function. The layered structure prevents bothersome glare and refracts the LED-lights, resulting in a warm glittery light.

The Fresnel Light consists of two halves, enclosing LED-modules. The hundreds of dimmable LED-lights produce over 50.000 hours of light and are easy to replace. Hanging on a steel wire, the Fresnel Light resembles a glowing celestial body. Like the orbit of a planet, the Fresnel Light rotates around a center core, a metal ball, making the direction of the light easy to adjust and to aim where needed. Besides this tilting function, the ball has a mechanism to adjust the length and store the hanging wire. The Fresnel Light is available in three sizes: two, three or four rings. The smallest version has diameter of 36 centimeters, the medium size of 52 centimeters and the largest version of 68 centimeters.

For over two years the Studio refined the Fresnel Light until they were completely satisfied with the design and its production process. The result is a very functional and sustainable light fixture and a true eye-catcher for offices, public buildings and private houses.

About Dirk Vander Kooij

Dirk Vander Kooij is one of the most influential Dutch designers of the recent years. In 2009 he graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven with a robot arm, designed to extrude large objects like furniture from recycled material, a world wide first. Ever since the introduction of this new technique, Studio Dirk Vander Kooij has been creating products with a strong visual impact. In the design of chairs, tables, vases and light fixtures Dirk combines tradition and technology, craft and digital robot techniques. Every piece is an industrially produced ‘one-of-a-kind.’
