Forget Black Friday, SmallBusiness Saturday is coming

This year, “Black Friday” sales are evenstarting on Thanksgiving at some big boxstores. The mad rush that claimed the life of ayoung Walmart employee crushed in a stam-pede some years ago is starting. We can expectparking lot rage, long lines at checkout coun-ters, sticker shock and all the signs of the holi-day shopping that make it the antithesis of whatit is supposed to be.

But, take heart, Small Business Saturday iscoming. A promotion started by AmericanExpress, it means showing your communityspirit by patronizing small businesses run byyour neighbors and friends.

Small Business Saturday means shoppingwhere they know your name. It means strollingdowntown in your hometown and looking in allthe windows for a serendipitous gift idea. Yourlocal merchant is also often the one that helpssupport your child’s team and gives to the PTAfor school events. She helps shoulder the localtax burden and gives to local charities.

The beautiful holiday decorations are fundedby your local chamber of commerce, which alsoorganizes several holiday events to help bringthe community together.

Church and temple bazaars are also greatplaces to find unique gifts that will be treasuredfor a lifetime.

If you have no other choice, endure BlackFriday. But enjoy Small Business Saturday. It’sa great way to get into the holiday spirit. Andsend us your stories about how you spent SmallBusiness Saturday. We would love to sharethem.
