No: 8 School Newsletter January 2016
Happy New Year!
We started our new year with a very successful Art Week which the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you
to everyone who came to the Art Exhibition on Friday. It was lovely to see so many children proudly showing off their
art work.
Here are a few of the pictures from the exhibition. We will be putting them (along with a lot more) onto the web site
in our picture gallery in the near future.
Headteacher for a day At the end of last term I had the pleasure of passing my Headship to Joshua Cunliffe in 4P for the day as he won my ‘Teacher Promise’ at the Christmas Fair. Joshua had a busy day – here is an excerpt from his diary for that day…..
Dear Diary Being Head teacher is fun but a lot of hard work! Today I didn’t get to sit down once! I had to have a meeting with the Deputy heads about a new book that might come to our school, I served Christmas lunch to Years 5 and 6, walked to the neighbourhood to deliver Christmas cards, signed paperwork, opened Christmas cards and watched the Year 5 Fab Finish. I enjoyed going on a learning walk to see what all the classes were up to. Overall my favourite part was watching the Year 5 Fab Finish. They were great!!
It was a great day and I learnt more about my school. Thank you Mrs Johnson for a fun day.
Parent workshop
Talking to your child about traumatic events. Wednesday 20th January 2016 at 9.00am and repeated at 6.30pm.
Talking to parents at the gate there are discussions about how to talk to children
about the media coverage they are seeing relating to traumatic events happening around the world.
This workshop is designed to share ways in which we can talk about these events with our children.
Year 5 - Berry Theatre
On Monday 11th
January, as part of their new ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’ topic, Year 5 had an amazing trip to
the Berry Theatre. Imagine their surprise when the theatre’s drama specialists revealed that their year group
would be starring in and helping to direct a newly-written play, The Legend of Sir Bevis - which is an old
Southampton tale. All of the children are very excited as no one in the whole world has ever performed this
production! Year 5 will soon start work on this unique project which will finish off with a performance in
March at the Berry Theatre.

Health & Safety
Clothing We would like to ask that all children bring a coat now the weather is colder, as the children will be outside at lunch and playtimes unless it is heavily raining. Children will continue to have outside PE lessons, so please ensure your child has suitable kit in school. This should include socks if necessary, as tights cannot be worn for PE lessons. Additional jumpers or fleeces are also advisable as coats are not suitable kit for PE lessons. All children are expected to wear sensible black shoes, Ugg boots are not acceptable as they aren’t water proof and don’t protect children’s feet.
Water bottles Please can all children bring a clearly-named, sports-style bottle, containing only water. Water bottles must never be put inside book bags as parents are frequently having to replace water-damaged library books. Children are allowed to drink from their bottles at any time during the day, except during the 5-10 minute teacher inputs. Bicycles and Scooters Safety Rules
You must dismount upon entering School Lane from either direction. All bikes/scooters must be stored in the bike or scooter racks. Bicycle helmets must be worn at all times. The security of your bike/scooter is your responsibility. Bikes or scooters must not be ridden on the school playground.
