Tornado season refers to the time of year that we are more likely to see conditions favorable for tornado activity in our state and region. They can happen at any time of the day or night and any time of year and are capable of destroying buildings, flipping cars, and creating deadly flying debris. Tornadoes may generate winds in excess of 200 mph.
Tornado warnings are issued by local National Weather Service offices when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. If you are under a tornado warning, find safe shelter immediately:
• If you can safely get to a sturdy building, then do so immediately.
• Go to a safe room, basement, or storm cellar. Put as many walls between you and the exterior as possible.
• If you are in a building with no basement, then get to a small interior room on the lowest level.
• Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls.
• Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You’re safer in a low, flat location.
• Watch out for flying debris that can cause injury or death. Use your arms to protect your head and neck. Provide patients, visitors, and staff with available pillows and blankets to aid in providing protection from flying debris.
St. Claire Health Care participated in tornado warning exercises to coincide with Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kentucky March 4-8. These exercises spawned discussion involving the maintenance of a safe environment for 347 patients, 210 visitors, and 536 staff members in our care at the time of the drills. Thank you for your commitment to safety as we move into Tornado Season in Kentucky.

RPLP Graduating Medical Students Match Their Top Choices for ResidencySubmitted by Bodie Stevens
The University of Kentucky College of Medicine's (UKCOM) Rural Physician Leadership Program is proud to announce that all nine graduating medical students have matched in their top choices for residency. These students have spent the past two years participating in clinical rotations with St. Claire HealthCare.
“All of the rotations at St. Claire were so wonderful that we want to come back and work here," said Zach Neace. "The family atmosphere was what drew us to this program and the culture here is exactly what we are looking for in our future careers.”
The match day celebration on March 15 was well attended by UKCOM students, family members, RPLP faculty, and local community leaders.

NE KY AHEC Awarded Grant for HPV EducationThe Northeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center (NE KY AHEC) was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the National AHEC Organization’s Training Center and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to address the low rates of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations within its service region.
The project will utilize the NE KY AHEC’s established continuing education division to provide informative sessions about HPV and vaccinations to health care providers and health careers students within Bath, Carter, Elliott, Menifee and Rowan counties through mid-September.
Such a project is desperately needed in this area, as the CDC reports Kentucky is one of only two states in which HPV vaccination coverage among adolescents is less than 50 percent.
“We have had good success in recent years in using continuing education activities to help drive positive changes within the regional health care system, and we anticipate similar results from this HPV project,” said David A. Gross, director of the NE KY AHEC. “We look forward to collaborating with health care facilities and educational institutions within this five-county region to disseminate HPV content to health care providers and health professions students.”
If you are interested in having HPV education brought to your clinical or educational setting, contact KaSandra Hensley, NE KY AHEC Assistant Center Director and Education Coordinator, at: [email protected] or call 783-6830.
