MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents

Welcome to the 2018 school year! What a joy it has been to welcome all our students on both the Halls Head and Meadow Springs campuses over the past three days, as well as the many parents and grandparents who have been present at orientation andonthefirstdayofschool.Therehasbeena‘buzz’ofexcitementandenergyaroundbothcampusestostarttheyear.

Last year, in keeping with our Strategic Plan (2017 – 2020), our theme was Inspire! In 2018, we will be focusing on Optimism, with all the wonderfully positive life skills it brings with it – being positive, solutions-focused and resilient!

2017hasseenstrongresultsacrossbothWACEandVETcourses.Ofthe155studentseligiblewesaw151achieveaWesternAustralianCertificateofEducation(WACE).

Wehad100%VETachievementmeaningthat25studentswhowere not enrolled in four or more ATAR courses successfully completedaCertificateIIorhigherVETcourse.

VEThasshownagradualincreaseinofferingsandenrolments.Intotalwehad54Year12students(35%)enrolledinoneormoreVETcourseand57Certificateswereissued.TherewerefiveindustryareasauspicedatSchoolwithsevendifferentcertificatesoffered.WealsohadtwostudentsundertakingaTraineeship which was organised by the student and the

employer,andwehadtwostudentscompletingonlineCertificatecourses.

CongratulationstoallthosestudentswhoachievedaCertificateIIorhigherandinparticularcongratulationstoCallumAnderson,SophieHopeandTylerLeamanwhoachievedthreeCertificateseachoverYears11and12.

I would also like to again congratulate all ATAR eligible students for their excellent results in the ATAR examinations.

SpecialcongratulationsgotoJackRichardsonforaCertificateofExcellenceforMediaProductionand Analysis.(CertificatesofExcellenceareawardedtoeligiblestudentswhoareinthetop0.5percentof candidatesbasedontheexaminationmark).

Ourhighestperformingcourses(basedon%ofstudentswhoachievedWACEcoursescoreof75ormore)inWACEcoursein2017wereEngineeringStudiesandMediaProductionandAnalysis.

Fromthe130studentswhosattheATARexaminationsin2017,weareproudofthefollowingresults:•5studentsachievedanATARof98.0orabove•25studentsachievedanATARbetween90.0and97.95•35studentsachievedanATARbetween80.0and89.90•28studentsachievedanATARbetween70.0and79.85

ThemedianATARfor2017was80.00

These results indicate the overall strength and academic depth of the group and they give our students a largerangeofchoicesfortertiarystudies.

WewouldalsoliketoparticularlycongratulatethestudentswhowereawardedCertificatesofDistinctionandMeritfortheirATARandWACEResultsacrossvarioussubjects.(ACertificateofMeritorCertificateofDistinctionis awarded to each eligible student who, in their last three consecutive years of senior secondary WACE enrolment,achieves:CertificateofMerit150–189pointsandCertificateofDistinction190–200points).

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers How wonderful it is to have everyone back for the new school year and to hear of all the exciting adventures thatwereenjoyedovertheholidaybreak.Thestudentsreturned excited to begin the new year and, although somestudentsexperiencedsomehealthyanticipation/normal anxiety, they quickly embraced the environments thatthenewschoolyearinevitablybrings.Thatisthewonderful thing about schools, they provide a controlled environment in which to experience such happenings, laying strong foundations for future situationsthatcontainuncertainty.Withtheemphasisinthe media on the prevalence of anxiety, I am heartened that as a Primary school, we go a long way to promoting child agency and give our students opportunities to make decisions, solve problems and be

supportedbutself-directedintheirlearning.

WelcometoournewstudentsandtheirfamiliesacrossthePrimary.Ihopeyourjourneywithusiseverythingyouanticipateditwouldbeandmore.In2018,wearelookingforwardtosharingmanyexcitingexperienceswithyou.Thisyear,wehavealargenumberofnewstaffduetotheopeningoftheHallsHeadcampus,andIwouldliketowelcomeallnewstafftothePrimaryteam.Iamconfidentthatyouwillgettoknowthemoverthecomingweeks.IwouldalsoliketowelcomeMrTeape,theDeputyHeadofPrimary,who is looking forward to working with you and continuing to develop the Pastoral Care initiatives that have beenintroducedoverthepastfewyears.

In Week 2, there will be Parent Information sessions, and Mr Teape, and I look forward to catching up with familiesduringthesemeetings.

Dear Parents We hope all Frederick Irwin families enjoyed a relaxing Christmasholidays.Wewereveryexcitedtowelcomestudents in full summer uniform this week for the beginning oftheschoolyear.Theclassroomteacherswereverybusysetting up their workspaces over the summer holidays and the classroom environments are looking fantastic and ready forthechildren.

A big thank you for the welcome I have already received from staff and community members as I have settled into theschoolinJanuary.IpreviouslyworkedatJohnWollastonAnglican Community School in Camillo, teaching a variety of yearlevels,rangingfromYears2-6.Ialsoundertooktherole

ofsubjectleaderinMathematicsandhavehadexperienceinactingrolesasaDeputyHeadofPrimary.IamlookingforwardtomeetingallcommunitymembersandstudentsattheMeadowSpringscampus.

AssembliesWehavetwoimportantassembliesearlyintheschoolyear.Thefirstisthe‘BlessingoftheBackpacks’onFridaythe9Februaryat8:35am.ThisisanopportunityforFatherNoeltoblessthebackpacksofallourstudentsandcometogetherasacommunity.ThisserviceisawonderfultraditioninthePrimarySchoolandwelookforwardtotheday.TheHouseCaptainsof2018willbecommissionedonFridaythe16February.Thisisaspecialoccasionasitformallywelcomesourstudentleadersintotheirrole.

UniformAs we leave the school holidays and transition back into the school environment it is important to remember ouruniformpolicy.Iwouldliketoreferyoutopage7ofthePrimaryDiary.Therearesomeimportantthingsmentionedinregardstouniform,includingmake-up,jewelleryandhairstyles.Areminderthatmake-upandnailpolisharenottobewornatschoolandthatonlyonepairofplainearringsisallowed.Hairshouldbeofnaturalcolourandneatandtidy.Thankyouinadvanceforyoursupportofuniformmatters.

Medical NeedsPleasecontactMrsKarenGaffinPrimaryReceptionifyourchild’smedicalneedshavechangedorneedupdating.Itisimportantthatwehaveallcurrentandrelevantmedicalinformationforthebeginningoftheschoolyear.

Friendly Schools and KidsMatterWe will continue to implement Friendly Schools (our social and emotional programme) in the Primary School thisyear.Thiswasverysuccessfullastyearandwillcontinuetohelpallstudentsbuildtheirsocialskillsandresilience.WealsocontinueourfocusonKidsMatter,ourmentalwellbeingframeworkwhichguidesmanyofourpastoralinitiatives.AvolunteerPastoralCareCommitteemadeupofteachingandnon-teachingstaffwillnowbeexploringComponent4oftheprogramme.Thiswillhaveafocusonsupportingchildrenwithmentalhealthdifficulties.IlookforwardtoworkingwiththecommitteetoseehowwecanbestsupportourchildrenatFrederickIrwinAnglicanSchool.

Dear Parents I would like to formally welcome everyone to our new campusin2018.Ithoroughlyenjoyedgreetingstudentsandfamilies on Wednesday and was thrilled to see the enthusiasticsmilesondisplay.Thesefirstthreedayshavebeen an opportunity to settle into routines and to establish newfriendshipsandconnections.Iknowthatbothstudentsandstaffareexcitedfortheyearahead.

A Wonderful Journey AheadThe Halls Head campus is a very special place and together we are Foundation members, whether it be staff, students, parentsorcommunitymembers.Together,wewillgrowasa

communityandSchool.Ourstrongvalues,faith,cultureandpedagogywillbeconsistentacrossbothcampuses.Asastaffweareverypassionateaboutprovidingourstudentswithwonderfulopportunitiestobeengagedintheirlearningandtheseareexperiencestowhichwearecommitted.

OvertheholidaystheSchoolwasabusyplace,withworksanddevelopmentconstantlyprogressing.I’mpleased with the progress that has been made and am happy that we were able to open our lovely classroomstostudentsonWednesday.TherearestillareasandaspectsoftheSchoolthatwillneedcontinueddevelopment,butpleasefeelconfidentthatthesewillbeaddressedastimeprogresses.AsacommunitywewillseetheSchoolgrowandflourish,andIfeelprivilegedtobeleadingHallsHead.IfyouhaveanyquestionsabouttheSchoolandourdevelopment,pleasefeelwelcometocomeandseeme.Iwillalwaysmaketimetospeakwithourfamilies.

Family Breakfast and Blessing of the BackpacksAs a School, we felt that it was important to provide our parents and families an opportunity to come togetherearlyintheterm.Assuch,wewillbeholdingaFamilyBreakfastonTuesday6Februaryat7:30am.We will be cooking breakfast sandwiches on the barbeque and our hope is that this will be an opportunityforparentsandfamiliestomeetandsocialise.Studentswillthenbewelcomedintotheclassroomat8:20am.Wehavealsoorganisedacoffeevan,atwhichparentscanpurchasecoffeefrom7:00amto8:30am.

WewillthenbegingettingreadyforourBlessingoftheBackpacksservice(8:35am).FatherNoel,ourChaplain,willbeblessingthebackpacksofallstudents.ThisshortbutimportantservicewillbeheldintheHallandprovideourfirstopportunitytocometogetherasaSchool.Ourhopeisthatparentsthatattendourbreakfastcanstayforourservice.Afterwards,(approximately8:55am)Iwillinviteallparentsintotheirchild’sclassroom.Iwillthenaskeveryonetosaygoodbyetotheirchildrenatapproximately9:15am,sothateachclassroomcanproceedwiththeirday.

Parent Information Sessions Parent Information Sessions will be taking place in Week 2 and will be an opportunity to hear from your child’steacherregardingtheyearahead.Classroomteacherswillemailoutthedayandtimeoftheirspecificsession.Iwillalsobeavailabletoansweranyquestionsyoumayhave.

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Dear Parents

The past eight years of OSL (Overseas Service Learning) haveallbeenverydifferent.Fromtheextremesofconditions working with the informal settlements in Manila, to a complete immersion in the life of a village in Myanmar, to the cultural experience and teaching in Cambodia - all these pilgrimages have challenged our studentsinthesameway.Thehavehadtolookoutsidethemselves, see the world through different eyes and walk withthesenewfriends.

Cambodia Connect, a Christian Organisation is working with Transform Cambodia to educate former street children, to become the leaders of a developing country that has been devasted by the elimination of a

quarterofitspopulation.Theprogramisnotaboutbuildingbuildingsbutbuildingpeople,peoplewhocanmakeadifference,whohavehope.

StudentsworkedforsixdaysinJanuarythisyear,bothmorningsandafternoonsinsmallgroups,inthe Transformcentrewithstaff,teachingEnglishpronunciationandconversationalskills.Studentshadto developgamesandlearningactivitiesthatfocusedonthesethings.Aswellasteachingstudents,our pilgrimswerealsoinvolvedinteachingstaff.

StudentsalsovisitedthehomesofTransformstudentsandmettheirfamilies.Thecentrearrangedfora teenager who had not had the Transform opportunity to come and show the students what she did and whatstudentsatTransformcentresintheirofftimedidtosupplementthefamilyincome.

In between, there was time for cultural activities including a trip to Angkor Watt, markets, river cruises and differenteatingexperiences(spiders,frogs,bugs).

TwomovingmomentswerethevisitstotheKillingFieldsandS21(PhnomPenhhighSchoolthatPolPot convertedintoaplaceofdeathandtorture).ThesetwotripscementedinthemindsofstudentsthereasonforthembeinginCambodia.

Thede-briefinSingaporewaswelcomed,withcycling,swimmingandreflecting.WelookforwardtothephotobookwithreflectionsappearinginthelibraryinJune.Afinalgettogetherwillbeheldinthenextmonthforfeedbackandcatchup.

2018 INTER-SCHOOL EQUESTRIAN CHAMPIONSHIPSThis year the Inter-School Equestrian Championships will be held at Brigadoon from Tuesday 17 April – Friday 20 April 2018.RidersneedtobeeitheracurrentJuniorCompetitiveorParticipantmemberofEquestrianWA.Tobeeligibletocompete, riders must complete qualifying events on the horse they wish to compete on; these need to be recorded onanInter-SchoolQualifyingCard.MoreinformationontheQualifying Card and what you need to do to qualify can be found at the following link; http://www.wa.equestrian.org.au/interschool/2018-state-inteschool-championships-qualify-ing-guidelines

Students can compete in the following disciplines;• Dressage – Preliminary, Novice and Elementary levels• Showjumping–Heightsfrom65cmthroughto120cm• Vaulting• Show Horse, Show Hunter and Working Hunter • Combined Training – dressage and showjumping
