MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Dear Parents and Caregivers

As a child I would sing, “Christmas is coming the geese are getting fat….” which shows my very English residencyandupbringing. Ican’tquitegetmyheadaroundMichael Buble singing, “Let it snow….” in theAustralian context, but do like the way he sings North-ern Hemisphere Christmas songs. So does Christmas mean more than just…the end of the year is rapidly approaching, there will be a zillion and one end of year functions I will need to attend, and what are we having for Christmas dinner and who’s coming?

As I have got older it has been nice to enjoy Christmas again with children…our grandchildren, see the sparkle in their eyes with every new gift, notice that a card-board box and the wrapper can hold more interest thansomeexpensivetoyandenjoyfindingsomequirkyactivity to do after festivities as every parent is weary

afterChristmaseatsanddrinks;and,grandparentsareneededtokeepthechildrenoccupied.

We are blessed by how much we have and can give at Christmas. It seems as if toys have got bigger, bat-teries last less time, and perhaps some gifts aren’t as treasured as they were in my time. I still have my train set frommy5thbirthday.Ihaveresistedgivingitawayalltheseyearsbecauseitholdsspecialmemories.ItisaTriang replica of the Trans Australian passenger train.

A couple of people have asked me if I will ever sell it. Probably not. My children may do some day when they clean out all of my things. Until then it remains as a tangible connection to Christmas past, and grounds me in Christmaspresentandfuture–aChristmaspastwherecelebratingthebirthoftheChristchildwaspartofthefabric of our family culture and Christmas would be the lesser event if we could not do that.

I pray that you can journey towards Christmas with a level of excitement that the season holds, and in par-ticular the celebration of the birth of God’s Son.

GodBless.

Kind regards Father Noel Oakey School Chaplain and Hockey Coach

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR OCTOBER - PREPARING FOR BLOCKS OF EXAMINATIONSFor many students, a block of examinations can be daunting. Some students have no idea where to start and what they should work on. The first thing to do if you have examinations approaching in thenext fewmonths is to find out what topics will be tested. Even a simple question to teachers can getyou started, such as ‘Are we being tested on the whole year’s work or just this semester?’. Once you know what topics will be covered, organise all of your learning materials and make sure nothing is miss-ing and you have everything you need to review those topics. The next step is to make study notes on these topics if you haven’t been doing this throughout the year (hopefully you have!). You can visit the Summarising Unit in the Study Skills Handbook to learn more about making effective study notes. Next it is time to start learning thenotes (testingyourselfon themoverandover)anddoingpracticequestionstomakesureyoucanapplyyourknowledgetodifferent typesofquestions. TheActiveStudyingUnitwillgive you lots of ideas on different study techniques to help you achieve your personal academic best.

If you have a number of weeks prior to the examinations, it is a good idea to make a plan in your dia-ry or phone or on a whiteboard of what subjects you will study when. Try and allocate each sub-ject once or twice each week, depending on the number of examinations you have. The Preparing for Examination Blocks Unit explains inmoredetail how youput together a studyplan for examinations. Our school’s subscription details to this online study skills website for secondary school students are www.studyskillshandbook.com.au .
