Staff and students are completing and polishing the learning that has taken place over the year while, in Secondary, they are also preparing for examinations. There are also still a number of significant events and camps on the calendar before the academic year finishes. Still, my motto is ‘better busy than bored’ and I am sure that all members of the school community will give of their best over these last few weeks. Year 12s There is a sense of excitement (touched with sadness) amongst the Year 12s as they realise that they are coming to the end of their secondary education. However, they are aware that it is vital to remain focused for just a few weeks as they complete their final examinations. Next week will see a number of opportunities for the school community to farewell our 12s and to thank them for their wonderful contribution to the School. In particular, I would like to thank them for being great role models for our younger students and for setting such a good tone in the School over their year as the student leaders of Frederick Irwin. Staff We welcome two staff members back from Long Service Leave this term: Mrs Raelene Cassin (Science Laboratory Technician) Mrs Wendy Morgione (Kindergarten Education Assistant) Congratulations to Mr Ross Dods who is Acting Deputy Principal – Curriculum this term. You need to think for yourself, and to feel sure that when you are obeying someone, even in your own family, that doing so is for your own good and will not hurt you or others. When you are obedient, you abide by the rules, even if you don’t like them, and it takes a lot of self-discipline to do so. You obey the rules even when no one is watching. STUDENTS HOP INTO THE SPOTLIGHT

Once Upon a Lily Pad is a musical that follows the story of a frog trying to find his place in the world, before realising everyone has their own special talents. Last term the Year 3 students at Frederick Irwin Anglican School performed the show to the other Primary students, family and friends. Year 3 teacher, Mrs Kerrie Taylor, said all the students were very excited to perform. “It has been wonderful to see the students so excited about performing in front of their peers and families,” Mrs Taylor said. “Each of the students created their own fantastic costumes as well, with a little help from their parents, and they all looked spectacular on stage.” Year 3 student, Spike JACOBS (3GT), said he had an amazing time playing his character, a tadpole. “I thought we did very well and my favourite character was Father Frog,” he said. Jessica MEARES (3GT) performed as the barn owl, and said she loved the singing and dancing. “I think we did well because everyone spoke really clearly,” she said. The Year 3 students rehearsed for the musical in their lessons for only eight weeks prior to the performance.

MUSCATEERS RECEIVE TECH BOOST

The Mandurah Muscateers take donations of computers and hardware, and turn them into useful technology made available at a heavily discounted price for community support organisations and low income people. The group of volunteers believe technology should be available to everyone. Over the school holidays, Frederick Irwin Anglican School donated over 70 decommissioned computers and LCD monitors to Mandurah Muscateers. “The devices were given to the School as part of the Federal Government’s 1:1 Computers in Schools Student Initiative, so it’s pleasing to see them continuing to help in the education of the wider community,” Frederick Irwin IT Manager Dean Smith said. “We love to hear about Mandurah expanding as a regional technology hub, so this was a perfect opportunity to recycle the computers.” Mandurah Muscateers Vice President, Mr Kevin Diamond, said that Mandurah Muscateers were grateful for the donation. “The computers end up being given to benefit card holders, like Seniors and Veteran Affairs, as well as disadvantaged families, the Peel Youth Centre and refuge centres in the Peel District. “It is always so rewarding to be able to pass on new donations to these groups in need,” he said. Located at 7/3 Rafferty Road in Mandurah, Mandurah Muscateers is always happy to answer questions about their service or the donation of machines.

ROTARY 4 WAYS PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

At Bendigo Stadium, Rushton Park on the 19 September, four Year 10 Frederick Irwin students, coached by Mr Brown, participated in the Rotary 4 Ways Public Speaking Competition. Aims of the competition include fostering excellence in the art of public speaking and developing confidence and self-esteem of the young participants. Rotary provided a host for each student and, prior to the speeches, the inter-generational connections were obvious in the laughter and stories that were shared over a meal that Rotary generously provided. The students presented their speeches to over 30 people, including their parents, three judges and representatives from Rotary. Students were assessed on the impact their speech had on intellect and emotions, as well as their ability to apply the Four-Way-Test. All students delivered their speeches within the five to six minute limit and were commended for their exploration of engaging and relevant topics which are listed below: Mack STEWART ELL6 – Social Anxiety Hannah SPENCER GOR6 – The Bubble Wrap Generation Lachlan THOMSON GOR6 – Junk Food and The Youth Emma STIRLING ROS5 – Reimagining the Education System Mack STEWART (ELL6) was the winner on the night and Hannah SPENCER (GOR6) was the runner-up. Mack will now refine his public speaking skills based on feedback from the judges and progress to the next round of the competition. Thank you to the parents for attending and supporting this initiative. Also, many thanks to Rotary for their generosity, feedback and encouragement. Well done to all participants for being excellent examples of how to represent the school in a respectful and enthusiastic manner and for challenging yourselves to learn, grow and interact in a productive way with members of the wider community.

CAREERS

Preparing for Examinations Examinations coming up this term? Follow these steps to help you achieve your personal academic best: 1. Find out what you need to learn: ask your teacher if you will be tested on the whole year’s work or just the second half of the year.

You may like to work through the preparing for examination blocks unit to help you put together a study plan. 2. Make your study notes: work through the summarising unit to learn how to make brain-friendly study notes. On the Things to Print

page you will find a very useful Study Notes Checklist. You want to get your study notes finished as quickly as possible. 3. Learn your study notes: make sure you remember what you study by using the techniques in the active studying unit. If you are

interested in exploring learning preferences, you can find more in this unit on this topic. 4. Practise the skills of the subject: Do as many different questions, revision sheets, chapter reviews, sample essays or past examination

papers as you can. There are suggestions on how to make sure the practice you do is effective in the active studying unit. 5. Review your test-taking techniques; this ensures that you make the most of the time in the examination. You can learn more about

what to do the night before, the morning of the examination, how to approach multiple choice questions and essays in examinations and much more in the test-taking unit.

6. When you get your examination paper back make the most of it by using the strategies in the after tests and examinations unit. Don’t leave your study until the last minute – get yourself organised well in advance.
