ongues are wagging in Mid-dletown again. Is it the orsale o the Wayside Inn? An-other ery town council meet-ing? Te Robbie Limon benetat the Wayside Teatre?

No. Everyone in Middletownis talking about the 20 ootblowup snowman on Pleas-

ant View Avenue. According toMrs. Alley, she complained toher husband and son last yearthat they did not decorate any

more. Te men took mattersinto their own hands. Tereare lights around the porch.Lights will be going up aroundthe house. And there is a snow-man in the ront yard that easilyclears the roo line o the house.Te way they hooked thesnowman up was ingenious!says Mrs. Alley. Want to seethe ever popular snowman? All

you need to do is ask anyone inMiddletown.

Note to kids you still needto be good. Santa has beenall around Frederick Countyrecently. He recently visited

It is sad, but true; the Wayside Innin Middletown is or sale again. TeCharons, Jacob and Lois, bought theInn rom the Bernstein Family Foun-dation in April 2009. At the time, the Charons planned to just live inthe Inn. Once they moved to Mid-dletown and realized what the Innmeant to people, the Charons decid-ed to give innkeeping a try. Accord-ing to Lois, we are business people;we know how to run businesses andbe successul.

Tat very success helped spur the

sale o the Inn. We really want toretire. We have been running theInn, serving meals, planning andscheduling events, and xing the Innsince day one. It is too much or two

people.Lois says the Inn was very run

down when they purchased it. Teyhave replaced the roo, painted, andxed a wide assortment o electri-cal and plumbing problems. Manyo the kitchen appliances have beenupdated. Te grounds, too, havebeen redone. Lois says they continueto improve the property.

At the same time, the Charons be-lieve their lives have been too dis-rupted running the Inn and the res-taurant. It is a non-stop job; one thatthe Charons were not expecting. We have been making good money, even considering al o the money we

are reinvesting in the property. Wedo a lot o the work ourselves, whichhelps.

One way the Charons are attempt-ing to get their lives back prior to

the sale o the Inn is by discontinu-ing the restaurant. Te Inn still hostsspecial events: weddings, parties, even recently a wake. Special eventscan be arranged by contacting theInn. However, as seen over and overagain, people stopping by the Inn ora meal or a cocktail are turned away.Lois said they are still making moneywith only the Inn and special events, and that the pace is signicantly less.

Reaction to the sale is mixed. Peo-ple love the Wayside Inn and whatit represents in Middletown, bothas a social venue and as a histori-cal marker in the community. Localperormer and Middletown residentRobbie Limon has played at theWayside Inn or years. Te Inn de-serves to be open to the public and

to keep the oldest continuously op-erating distinction. It should not bea private home. Hopeully the newowners will reopen the Inn and therestaurant and share it with the pub-lic.

Anita Holley, also a Middletownresident and a member o the plan-ning commission, ears more diremeasures. Tere is nothing to pre-

vent the Inn rom demolition. Mid-dletown did not enact an historicoverlay ordinance, which would haveprotected the integrity o the Inn.She understands that there is no ed-eral protection because the age o

various pieces o the Inn are incon-gruous. Also, the highway marker onRoute 81 will most likely be removed

i the Inn does not serve meals.Te removal o the market dove-

tails with Irish Isle owner BrianCoughlans views. Te loss o theWayside Inn is a loss or everyone in

town, including the businesses. TeIsle gets busy during weddings atthe Wayside Inn. Inn guests usuallystroll down Main Street to check out

the Isle. One businethe others; the morehave in Middletown, or all businesses.
