Fireghting is about as selessan endeavor as I can think o. Itsa duty riddled with risk but asnecessary as night is to day, quietlyconducted by men and womenwhod just assume you not knowwho they are behind their masksand body armor. Well, quiet-ish,anyhow; the trucks are loud. Butthats so you get the hell out o theway so they can hose down thetool shed your neighbor grilledwith his hot dogs. When (not i)that happens, who you gonna call?

And i you say Ghostbusters, thispaper will spontaneously combustand char your retinas, renderingyou comically unable to phonethe guys you really need. Hopeyour insurance is up to date. Justsayin.

I kidkind o. Chances are, ev-eryone will require the services othe hook and ladder at some pointin their liveskinda like lawyers,

though they usually arrive aterthe res out.

Chie William Billy Morelandknows what it takes to keep a restation up and running. Morelandoversees South End Fire Depart-ment in Winchester, one o our volunteer rehouses in the city, and or a time, he was a worriedman. Recent years have broughtuncertainty to the doorstep o notjust South End but the reghtingcommunity as a whole in Win-chester. Money to cover operatingcosts was drying up with uncom-ortable rapidity, making guys likeMoreland begrudgingly entertain

the notion o doing with one lessrehouse. It didnt come to that,Moreland says, because the Citystepped in when called upon anddid the right thing.

Ive been here or eighteenyears, he says, and this was asclose to a crisis situation as Iveseen. We didnt want to ask theCity or a loan, but ater careulconsideration, we realized its

what we had to do i were gonnacontinue operating. Moreland is

reerring to a $150,000 loan thatSouth End received rom the City,a loan engineered largely by inter-im City Manager Craig Gerhart, whom Moreland is quick to thank. He stood up or us, made sure wegot what we needed and arrangedor it to be paid back over a periodo twenty years, says Moreland.

What they needed was cash torevitalize a building that knockedon the door o dilapidation. Ourstation house is really showingits age, he says. Te roo leaks. Our HVAC is almost thirty yearsold and operates like it. Upstairswhere reghters eat and sleep

when theyre on duty, we oundmold in the ceiling tiles, which ob-viously isnt a good thing or peo-ple to be breathing. Te HVACrepairs are underway, he said, andmost repair work is expected to becompleted by springtime.

I think its important or peopleto know, too, that the money wereceived, it didnt impact the citysbudget in any way. But the month-ly stipend rehouses receive com-bined with our primary undraiser, which is bingo, wasnt bringingin enough anymore. Bingo? Sureenough, every Monday and Fridayevening; turns out theres real

money to be made on books andearly birds and quickies. But onlyi people play, which in the pasthasnt been an issue, says More-

land: he economic downturnaects everyone. Less disposable

income, less people doing thingslike coming to play bingo. Whichpresents a very real dilemma orstations like South End, who relyon that resource as a means osustaining their operation. Otherrevenue reservoirs, like sel-stor-age business and rental propertiesmanaged by the station, providea boost, but its bingo that hasproven to be their Old Faithul.Dont eel bad; I wouldnt haveguessed it either.

South End also received a grantrom the Virginia State Fire Chies

Association, a grant recruiting and retain

Tere is a blues band in Win-chester called erry Oates andthe Mudcats. I you havent heardthem, you will soon. Becausetheyre damn good. Believe menow and thank me later.

I spoke with the bands name-sake not long ago about their musicand the ortuitous circumstances

that spawned their meeting; aboutplaying guitar; about the blues andabout songwriting and what itslike to drive a motorcycle acrossthe U.S. o hear erry tell it, theMudcats could be called a happyaccident, the result o opportu-nity and talent converging at justthe right time. Te place was theWinchester Blues House, wherehe was Stage Manager or oversix years. Te higher-ups at the

Blues House asked i I could puttogether a band in ten days. Teidea was that wed play the singleshow, just a one-o kind o thing. So erry called on riends hedplayed with beore and recruitednew bandmates rom the BluesHouse and assembled a 9-piecegroup or the show. Only three ous had played in bands beore, butwe had so much un playing thatshow, and the chemistry was there. So we stayed together and startedcalling ourselves erry Oates andthe Mudcats.

hat was a little over threeyears ago, and the current lineupo seven members have all beenhand-picked by erry, who asiderom his lead guitar and singingduties also selects and arrangesnew songs or the band. Whileerry handles much o the leadvocal work, hes not hesitant to

pass the mic, and its not unusualor three, our, or even ve singersto step up on any given night. Ilook or versatility in the songs, who might sound good singing aparticular song, he says. I I hearsomething I think is a good t orsomeone in the band, Ill bring it in.From there, its on them to step upto the plate.

I it sounds like erry has high

bartering o his soul to the Devil inreturn or absurdly dexterous gui-tar playing is the bedrock o bluesmusic (and perhaps all o recordedpop music). Actually, says erry, the song ellin Lies on Highway

started as an acoustic lick when meand a riend were discussing howJohnson wrote the turnarounds inhis songs. Another track, Fishero Men, was built on a bluesy, JimiHendrix-inspired ri, with lyricserry wrote ater a movie hedwatched got the phrase stuck in hishead. And Crux Alley, thats abouta real street here in Winchester. Uskids used to go down there, it waskind o a sketchy place, so wed sayput your money in your shoes.rue story.

So whats been the most un soar? Weve accomplished a lot ina relatively short amount o time.

Ater we debuted the album atthe Winchester Blues House, weplayed alongside the likes o JimmyVaughn and Devon Allman (StevieRays brother and Greggs son, respectively); we even came backas a headliner with them. Stu l ikethat, its great. We just love to play.Hell, Ive been doing it or this long, and theres always something elseto learn, something I havent triedyet. And while erry Oates andthe Mudcats incorporate covers intheir live show, theres no eeling, erry says, like keeping the crowdon their eet with our own stu.Nothin like it.

In the past week, the race or theRepublican nomination or Presidenthas completely changed, lippingthe expectations o political expertson its head and shocking many inthe party. Newt Gingrich, the or-mer Speaker o the House whosecampaign had seemed to collapselast year stunned rontrunner MittRomney with a double digit vic-tory in the South Carolina primary. While the deeat had been presagedby polls and was thereore somewhatexpected, the margin o victory was

both surprising and extremely prob-lematic or Romneys campaign.

It had been obvious in the daysleading up to election in South Caro-lina that the entire dynamic o therace was changing rapidly. Romneyhad previously held double digitleads in South Carolina and morethan a twenty point lead nationallyin the Gallup tracking poll. Ten ev-erything changed, as Gingrich rattledo several debate perormances thatseemed to consolidate conservativesupport around him. In a dizzyingseveral days, Gingrich pulled aheadin South Carolina polls, ate intoRomneys national lead, and receivedthe endorsement o exas Governor

Rick Perry, whose decision to dropout helped move more conserva-tive voters to Gingrichs column. And that was only the usual politicalinside baseball. wo nights beorethe election, Gingrichs ormer wiegave an interview on ABC talkingabout the details o their divorce, in-cluding the accusation that Gingrichasked or an open marriage. Even asthis scandal rocked the campaign,Gingrichs numbers continued tosurge in South Carolina. A key mo-

ment came at a CNN debate daysbeore the election when moderatorJohn King opened with a questionabout Gingrichs ormer wies ac-cusations. Gingrich railed on theKing about opening a debate or thePresidency with a matter like this, beore denying that the accusationswere truthul. He was awarded with

an explosion o applause. While it would seem that these

    kinds o accusations would have

doomed a campaign or the Repub-lican nomination, particularly daysbeore a deeply conservative statelike South Carolina voted, Gingrichsattack on the media and his savagingo Mitt Romneys moderate imageswept him to victory and now hashim in the lead nationally accordingto Gallup. For a year or more, Rom-ney has been the assumed rontrun-ner, but that has now most denitelychanged, as the candidates move tothe next battleground: Florida.

Te Sunshine State is ultra-expen-sive to advertise in, particularly whencompared to the previous primaryand caucus states. his will giveRomney an advantage as he tries to

recover, stop the bleeding, and beatback Gingrichs surge. Recent pollsin Florida though show Gingrichalready in the lead, despite a delugeo V ad money already spent byRomney there. What this seemsto indicate is that the conservativemovement that makes up the Re-publican base has decided againstRomney and that decision seems tobe hardening to the point that money

alone will not save the ormer Mas-sachusetts governor. While SenatorRick Santorum is still in the race, he

lacks the support or nancial powerto really hinder Gingrich. And Con-gressman Ron Paul, who does havesigniicant resources, is likely tocontinue getting the level o supporthe has achieved in earlier primariesbut not any more. So in a way theelection has become a two-man race,

the thing Romneys caeared and his detrsaid was why he wou

nomination.Still the Republicalishment is reporteduniversally terriedNewt Gingrich as the will likely become min their support o Rmay be too late or

Much to the heartbreak o localBaltimore ans, the Ravens nar-rowly missed their opportunity to

Despite having what manyNFL experts believed to be themost talented team in the league, the Ravens could not deeat omBrady and the New EnglandPatriots in the AFC champion-ship on Sunday. he Patriotsare headed to yet another SuperBowl, this one a rematch with theNew York Giants who handedthem a Super Bowl deeat our

years ago. Baltimore ans willhave to turn their attention theNFL drat and wait or next yearor an opportunity to win anotherSuper Bowl.

he Ravens may have lostbut they certainly went downswinging. Also, the normallySuper Man-like om Brady didnot play like his normal sel onSunday, something that he admit-ted publicly as soon as the gamewas over. Indeed it was not the

vaunted New England oensiveattack that doomed the Ravens,

it was the much maligned NewEngland deense and ultimatelythemselves.

Te Ravens actually led the Pa-triots in the ourth quarter, untilom Brady eliminated that lead

with a daring dive over a churn-ing group o struggling linemeninto the end zone rom the one

yard line. he Ravens oundthemselves down by 3 points inthe nal minute o the game, butbattled their way down the eldand into scoring position. JoeFlacco threw a pass into the endzone, which hit the hands o re-ceiver Lee Evans but was knockedout by a Patriot deender. Tattouchdown would likely have sentthem to the Super Bowl, but it

seemed that overtime was at leaston the horizon as normally reli-

able eld goal kicker Billy Cundicame out on the eld. Apparentlyrushed, he hooked the kick tothe let and the Patriots sidelinesexploded.

It was 20th-century American criticJohn Leonard who made the ollow-ing sage observation: o be capableo embarrassment is the beginning omoral consciousness. Honor grows romqualms.

Youve probably never heard o the

Spanish village o Lijar, located in thesouth o that country. his village, though, was involved in a nearly 100-yearwar that lasted well into the 20th century. It seems that in 1883, Alonso XII, theking o Spain, made a state v isit to Parisand received a less-than-royal welcome.Led by mayor Don Miguel Garcia Saez, the citizens o Lijar, ater hearing thattheir monarch had been insulted andpossible accosted by mobs, declaredwar on France. Tough there were nocasualties -- not even any gunre -- the

war lasted until 1981. Tat was whenthe town council ruled that it wouldend hostilities with France thanks to the

warm welcome King Juan Carlos o Spainreceived in France in 1976.

Te town o Adamant, Vermont, was

once named Sodom. Te townspeoplevoted to change the name in 1905.

Te rst portable computer was made

available to the public in 1975. In thisinstance, however, portable was usedas a relative term; the IBM 5100 weighed55 pounds.

Only 5 percent o American men

report that they eel satised with theirlooks. With women, its only 1 percent.

In 2008, a study was conducted in the

United Kingdom to determine what, iany, eect the consumption o tomatoeshad on the human bodys reaction tosun exposure. Te university studentsenrolled in the study who consumedthe equivalent o about ve tomatoesper day were 33 percent less likely toget sunburned than those who ate notomatoes.

Dog Hates BathtubDEAR PAWS CORNER: My

German shepherd, Silky, is 10years old and has developed hipdysplasia, which makes her prettyuncomfortable. She avoids slip-pery floors and she hates the tub,but I need to give her a bath. Isthere a way I can do this better tokeep her comfortable? Jack T.,Oklahoma City

DEAR JACK: There are a few waysto help Silky stay comfortable while

being bathed. First, try placing a large, wet towel in the tub that she can standon to gain traction. Lift her into the

high-sided tub rather than make herjump in. Shepherds are large dogs, soif need be, work with a second personand tandem lift her, with one of youcradling under her chest and the othercradling her midsection and thentucking the other arm between her

back legs and supporting her belly.A step-in shower is an even better

option, if you have one. Again, putdown a wet towel so that she feelssecure standing or sitting.

In warm weather, you could set upan inflatable kiddie pool and fill itwith warm water. This gives big dogsenough room to sit or even lie downduring their bath, and they can justwalk into it over the low sides.

During the bath itself its importantto work fast. Keep Silkys collar andleash on so you can hold her still asyou wet her down (either with warm

water scooped in a cup or using asprayer attachment), add soap (onlysoap formulated for use on dogs),then rinse. Talk soothingly throughthe whole process. Once complete, lift her out of the tub onto a nonsliprug and towel-dry her fur, then giveher lots of praise and a treat.
