News from Mr. Todd As some of you may know by now, my days with the 4-H program in Frederick County are rapidly coming to a close. Recently, my wife was offered a promotion, with her job, and after some careful consideration we have decided that she should take it as it was an opportunity that she could just not pass up. With this opportunity, however, we do have to move. This move is taking us to Portland, OR. With that being said, my last day with Extension and 4-H will be March 17th. I cannot thank the Freder-ick County 4-H community enough for all of the help and support that it has provid-ed to me over the last 14 months. I just now feel as if my feet are wet and that I am ready to get going.

You all have taught me so much. Everyone has helped make my transition into this role a successful one. I will truly miss working with 4-H in Frederick County. It has been a pleasure getting to know you and, again, I thank you for everything. As my family and I head off on our new ad-venture, I will think back on my tenure here in Frederick County as a great time in my life. Many lessons have been learned and I have had the wonderful opportunity to experience many new things and for that I am grateful. Between now and the 17th, if you have any questions about my transition process please don't hesitate to contact me.

Todd McKinney, 4-H Educator

A Note from Ms. Donielle

February has just begun and the 4-H calendar is already full of amazing oppor-tunities for the 2017 year. From workshops, to field days, speakers, contests, and camps, the adventures are right at your finger tips. 2017 is an exciting year as Frederick County will be hosting many of our central MD cluster 4-H events. Public Speaking, Fashion Revue, Sewing Workshops, Nutrition Workshops and some exciting 2 day summer workshops geared towards agriculture and food science will take place here in Frederick.

I would like to encourage each of you to participate in one of our county events this year, especially the communications or public speaking contest. Public speaking was one of my most terrifying learning experiences. Prior to 4-H I played sports, participated in church activities and danced. Although I was very active in my community many of those experiences did not require me to speak in front of others. Then I attended a Walkersville 4-H Club meeting with my cousins and had to speak in front of the entire club. All I had to say was my name, age and that I was interested in the Beef project, however I thought my chest was going to explode.

Over time I was able to build my confidence speaking in front of my friends, say-ing the pledge and sharing committee reports. When I was 14 years old my club leaders recommended I try the public speaking contest. Along with their sup-port and encouragement I prepared a speech, practiced a few times, and en-tered the county contest. I was so excited when I saw the familiar faces of Dr Ediger along with Mary Sue Grossnickle as my judges. I was able to relax and share my speech I had prepared without feeling terrified. I did very well that day and received a champion ribbon in Prepared Speech.

If I would not have been guided by the volunteers in my club, or received sup-port from local mentors I would not have succeeded in my public speaking pro-ject. Today I am thankful for the life skill of communication I was taught as a 4-H member. This spring I challenge each of you to try the communication con-test; whether it be a 30 second radio advertisement, a prepared speech or even the extemporaneous category. We have a great resource of volunteers and past 4-H'ers here in Frederick County you can help you succeed. For more infor-mation give us a call at the 4-H Office at 301-600-1589.

Kaleidoscope 4-H Club The Kaleidoscope 4-H Club had their Holiday Party in December. We played games, made cookie trays for our sponsors that help us throughout the year and wrapped pre-sents for the residents at the Northampton Manor Nursing home.

On December 23rd we visited the nursing home to hand out the gifts. The residents were overjoyed to see us and got to open a gift for Christmas. Our leader, Tammy Eaves got to see her grandmother at Northampton. The gifts that the club donated were boxes of tissues, socks, plush toys and body lotions. A lot of the people we met were part of 4-H when they were younger. The first man that we saw had joined 4-H to look at the girls with his buddy. The club members that attended to hand out gifts were Rayann, Rachel, Alexis, Isaac and Eva. We felt very happy for helping out and bringing smiles to the people at Northampton Manor.

Monocacy Achievers 4-H Club On December 17th, our club went to the Weinberg Center to see the play, A Christmas Carol. We helped support one of our members, Josie Ritchie (shown in picture), who played the part of Tiny Tim. We voted for our new officers: President: Morgan, Vice President: Lindsey, Treasurer: Ally, Secretary: Jenna, and Club Reporter/Historian: Josie. In January, our club did presentations on different things. We learned how to: braid hair, make bracelets with rubber bands, tumble rocks, make a fairy garden, draw an eye, make butter and make goo. Our volunteer judges were Laura Ritchie, Shelly Funk and Vicki Windsor. By Josie, Reporter

Middletown Valley Youth 4-H Club Middletown Valley Youth celebrated the holidays with a wonderful Christmas party held at the 4-H Camp Center in Decem-ber. Everyone brought a dish or dessert to share to go with fried chicken. The members participated in a surprising, secret gift exchange. It is always fun to see what people open each year. There were jars for candy guess also. The party is al-ways a great way for the members and families to come together every year. In January members who hold beef projects took their animals to the beef weigh in. Several members attended and helped at the bingo at the camp center to support the Knott family. Members were also working this month to finish their record books to get them ready to turn in.

Alpha Alpaca 4-H Club Alpha Alpaca Club News: On December 17th the party committee created a eventful Christmas party. The club played many games together. Mr. Rick hosted the “Snowman Game”, which was putting a plate on top of our heads and attempting to draw a snowman wearing a hat and scarf. We played guess how many M&M’s are in the jar and Bingo. Everyone in the club participated in the Ugly Sweater Contest and Secret Santa. The club got the two club leaders gifts as well. We also en-joyed playing with props in the photo booth. The club didn't hesitate when it was time to eat. We had fried chicken, salad, cheese and crackers and many home made delicious treats.

In January some of the club members worked together on the booth. The committee came up with their idea on how to de-sign the booth to match the saying “Lead, Inspire, Experience and 4H Forever”. On the 21st of January it was Senior Bond-ing Night. The seniors ate delicious snacks and pizza. They watched Shrek One and Shrek Two and played many games. The object of one of the games was to get the blue cup that had many red cups stacked under it back to the top. We had to alternate hands and switch one cup at a time. The seniors played more entertaining games that night. The club was busy sharing laughs and making memories with friends this month.

Valley Urbanites 4-H Club At our December meeting the Valley Urbanites had a Christmas party at the 4-H Camp Center. At the party we had a lot of fun. We did crafts, had dinner, did a gift exchange and did some pretty fun games. Some games we played were Pic-tionary, and opened a present that was covered in wrapping paper and we had to open it with oven mitts on. We also collected hats and gloves for the kids in Head Start.

At the January meeting we voted to participate in Ag Week at the Mall and decided on an idea for our booth. We inducted new officers: Aubrey - President, Angela - Vice President, Kendall - Secretary, Meagan - Treasure, Eva - Sargent of Arms, Lillian - Game/Song Leader, Maggie - Refreshment Coordinator, Angela - Community Service, and Reese - News Reporter. We made snowmen to enter as a Club Craft at the Fair and played a card tower building game. Merry Clovers, the new group of clovers in the Valley Urbanites, also met and did snowmen crafts. Meagan is planning a run/walk for cancer in memory of her dad in June. More information will be shared as available.

Members of the Lewistown 4-H and Cloverbud club have been very busy in the last few months of 2016. In October, members visited the Lawyer’s Corn Maze in Thurmont. Many went through the corn maze, tried the zipline, and enjoyed the bon fire too. Cloverbud members were able to participate in many activities located in the large shed at the Lawyer’s Corn Maze. Many thanks to Tatiana Burrier, Cloverbud leader, for arranging this activity and to Taylor Huffman and family at Lawyer’s Corn Maze.

At our November meeting, Donielle Axline conducted the record book presentation so everyone from our club would have great books for 2016. This was very informative and educational to those present. We had a Claire’s Gourmet Popcorn fundraiser in November and the Clo-verbud group also held their pop-up ceremony, where the cloverbuds enjoyed light refreshments, had several members “graduate” to the big club and other fun activities.

Also in November we collected new and gently used coats for the Thur-mont Clothes Closet, located in Thurmont, Maryland.

Our Holiday party was held on December 2, 2016 at Mount St. Mary’s Knott Arena, our club collected canned goods and items for Christmas for a needy family which we adopted from the Lewistown Elementary School. Our adopted family was one of 18 families at the school adopt-ed during the holiday season. We also provided food for Christmas din-ner and other household items, clothing, and other items which the family requested.

At our January meeting our community service project will be collect-ing hats and gloves for school children.

We are looking forward to a fun and exciting year in 2017.

Lewistown Mt. View 4-H Club On December 2, 2016 the Lewistown Mountain View 4-H Club and their families had a Christmas party at Mount Saint Mary's College. We had lot's of fun! Many played basketball while some went swimming. We played guessing games, and had pizza and snacks afterwards!

January 16, 2017 we had our club meeting and played guessing games. After the meeting we had snacks and drinks. Our cloverbuds met at the same time in a different room. The 2017 Lewistown Club Officer's are: President: Tiffany, Vice-Presidents: Morgan and Konner, Secretary: Destiney, Treasurer: Morgan, Correspondent: Taylor, and Reporter: Tarrah.

The Bug Patrol 4-H Club Members of The Bug Patrol did a behind the scenes tour of the insect collection at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History on 15 January. Members learned a little about the size of the collection and were able to see some specimens not normally seen by the public. Here are a few photos of the day.

In December, members of The Bug Patrol held their annual holiday party. In addition to holding elections for club offic-ers, two members gave excellent presentations, club members who had exhibited their collections this year were able to select an exotic insect to add to their collection, and we all shared a lot of food (most with an insect theme). A good time was had by all.

Middletown Dairy 4-H Club The Middletown Dairy 4-H Club has been busy the last couple of months! We met in December at Pizza Hut to enjoy a Christmas dinner together and to wrap gifts we bought for 2 families in need. Later in December some of our members took blankets we had been working on to a veterans home. The veterans were so appreciative. In January, our club held our annual awards banquet. We enjoyed good food and fellowship at the Burkittsville Community Hall. We installed new officers and received awards for the year. We have many community service activities planned so far this year and we are excited to begin another year in 4-H!

“Fire Power” 4-H Shooting Sports Club

Frederick County 4-H Shooting Sports Program presents annual drawing winner with a new camouflage 4X4 UTV at the Frederick County Extension Office. Ron Mullins of Ox-ford, PA was this year's Grand Prize winner. Christmas came early for some winners recently of the 5th Annual Sportsman's Drawing especially for the UTV Grand Prize winner. Ron Mullins of Oxford, Pennsylvania bought his winning ticket at the Maryland State 4-H Shotgun Match in October at PG County Trap & Skeet where his daughter Heather was competing in the match representing Cecil County 4-H "Young Guns". Heather was just as excited to claim the top prize from the drawing stating that 'we have a place to ride it... and I'm ready to try it out!'. Heather has been shooting for a few years and her father said the UTV would come in handy when towing & hauling target throw-ers and equipment while practicing shooting clay targets. This was the first time the grand prize was won by a "fellow 4-Her" and the club members were just as happy for her and her family. "Shotgun" is one of 6 main disciplines taught and practiced in the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, one of the most popu-lar among members and can be one of the most expensive. Many of the Frederick County 4-H Shooting Sports Club "Fire-Power" members are also ATA/AIM members and are no strangers to competing in state and national matches.

During the Annual Maryland State 4-H Shotgun Match held in PG County on October 22nd, 12 Maryland Coun-ties were represented. The October event focused not only on each participant's shooting ability, but discipline, respect, procedures, safety, knowledge and rules of each of the 3 shotgun 'games' including Skeet, Trap and Sport-ing Clays. This year 73 youth participated from across the state in (3) 4-H age groups ranging from 8 to 18 years old and one category "Advanced Seniors" for those members who have already competed at Nationals.

Frederick County 4-H had 9 participants in the State 4-H Shotgun Match this year. Senior members (ages 15-18) with the top 10 scores from the State Match have the op-portunity to practice on the "State Practice Team" to hone their skills with a chance to be chosen to represent Maryland at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Shotgun Match to be held in Grand Island, Nebraska on June 25-30, 2017. Starting in January 2017 the "State Practice Team" will travel to practice together at various ranges across the state and receive a more intense training to help hone their skills. They will be required to submit to oral inter-views and essay to narrow the group. The final "State Team" of 4 members and a team alternate will be chosen and announced in late Spring at Schrader's 4-H Founda-tion Shooting Sports Fundraiser. (continued on pg 13)

All did very well despite the windy weather. In the Inter-mediate age category for Frederick, Mo placed 3rd in Trap and Hunter placed 2nd in Skeet placing 4th Overall. Also from Frederick in the Senior age category, Club member PJ of Jefferson scored 1st place in Trap and 2nd Over-all securing a spot on the State Practice Team. PJ is committed to working hard and practicing to sharp-en his abilities despite the weather and has his eye on representing Frederick County and Maryland as a Shotgun State Team Member at Nationals. He is also at the top in his academics with a busy schedule and some-times can be found working on homework- even at a shooting match while wait-ing for his turn to "take the line". National Poultry & Egg Conference Maryland Takes Top Honors At National 4H Convention

Maryland was well represented at the National Poultry & Egg Conference held at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center in Lou-isville, Kentucky. The National Contest consisted of 76 contest-ants from 19 states. The contest was broken down into 3 divi-sions: Production Hens/Reasons class, Egg Division, and Market Poultry. In the Production Hens/Reasons class contestants judge and place 3 classes of live Leghorn production hens and give rea-sons to defend their placing. Next, the egg division is where eggs are graded by USDA standards for interior, exterior, and broken-out qualities. Then, they grade ready-to-cook market poultry and have a parts ID class.

Congratulations to Jaclyn and Amanda for making the National Team and for doing so well.
