GENERAL INFORMATION

“Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati is one of the most important higher education institutions in Romania. It is the most representative university in the south-east of the country. “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati has been nationally and internationally acknowledged during its 60 years of existence. “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati is an accredited higher education state institution, functioning based on regulations stipulated and approved by the Senate or by managerial organisms of structural components, in agreement with: the Declaration of the Rights of Man, the Constitution of Romania, the Law of Education, the Law of the Status of Teachers and the provisions of the University Carta.

Galaţi University has several unique fields of education in the country, such as Naval Architecture and Fishery and Fish Industrialization. During the years, specialists covering a wide range of education fields have been trained at the University of Galaţi: engineers, teachers, economists, programmers and computer system designers.

New university programmes has been developed in the last years: Management in Industry, Finaces and Credit, International Economics Relations, Administration and Technical Informatics. Post-graduation courses for engineers and training courses for the teachers of the pre-university level are organised every year.

“Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati encompasses 15 faculties, 49 departments, 9 doctoral schools and offers numerous academic programmes that overarch all levels of university training: 71 bachelor degree programmes (in 43 fields), 57 Master study programmes (in 30 fields), PhD study programmes in 9 fields, and programmes for professional reconversion and training. All programmes included in the educational offer are either accredited or authorized.

“Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati is one of the most important research centres in Romania. Over 20 accredited research centres develop research activity and collaborative with similar Romanian foreign research centres. “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati is a part of a large network of international collaborations; it has developed bilateral collaboration agreements with over 140 universities of 18 countries. Every year, students from “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati have documentation and training visits to universities in Europe, U.S.A., Canada, Japan, Australia etc. A great number of professors are invited abroad in order to deliver conferences or to teach courses as associate or visiting professors.

Information on the national education system in ROMANIA

Admission to higher education is based on the diploma de bacalaureat (12 years of study), and to the master programmes is based on diploma de licenţă.

All accredited Romanian universities are using the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). After graduation of the short-term higher education (180 ECTS) the diploma de absolvire

shall be granted. After graduating the long-term higher education and having passed the final exams one can

obtain: diploma de inginer (300 ECTS), diploma de arhitect (360 ECTS) or diploma de licenţă in all other fields (240-360 ECTS). For the autorized and accredited programmes of study, university programs for distance learning shall be organized.

In România, the higher education system is organized in an open way, the graduates of the short-term higher education may continue their studies within the long-term higher education.

Etudes approfondies are provided within 2 or 3 semesters (60 - 90 ECTS) in the same field as the diploma obtained after long-term higher education. At the end, the Studiile aprofundate are finalized with a Dissertation, and graduates are awarded the diploma de studii aprofundate.

EDUCATION SYSTEM IN ROMÂNIA

Master studies last for 2 to 4 semesters (60 - 120 ECTS) and they are provided either in the field of the diploma de licenţă or in other fields of studies. Master studies are finalized by a Dissertation and the graduale is awarded the diploma de master.

The PhD studies are finalized by a research thesis, and graduates obtain the diploma de doctor.

The schools of academic post university studies are organized as independent institutions and offer training programmes, which last for 2 to 4 semesters; they are meant to deepen the studies obtained by the long-term higher education diploma. Studies are finalized by a Dissertation. The graduates are awarded the diploma de studii academice postuniversitare.

Post university specialization studies can be attended by graduates of some form of long-term higher education and were awarded a diploma. The duration, curriculum and the final ization method of these studies are approved by the university senates. Graduates are awarded the diploma de studii postuniversitare de specializare.

Universities also provide life-long training programs according to the market demands and the needs of vocational reconversion.

In the healthcare domain, for doctors, specific programmes are provided for granting doctors the specialist certificate - issued by the Ministry of Health.

Admission Procedure

Admission is non-discriminatory and depends entirely on the candidates’ qualifications and

academic background. UDJG organizes the admission process according to its own procedures, on account of the diploma awarded at the end of the previously attended study programme, and taking into consideration the hierarchy of the results in the academic record. Thus, high-school graduated may apply for an bachelor course of studies only if they hold an A-level/Baccalaureate diploma. To enter in a master or a doctoral programme, candidates must hold a undergraduate diploma. Master programmes last one year and half to two years and may be attended by graduates of full-time undergraduate programmes holding a BA/BSc degree, irrespective of the courses previously attended. Applicants for the Master postgraduate programmes must take an entrance test. Candidates to doctoral programmes, irrespective of the form of tuition, must go in an entrance examination organised yearly by IOSUD (Institution Organising University Doctoral Programmes), consisting of an interview on their readings from a number of bibliographical sources, that follows their passing a foreign language test.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The research activity has had an ascending evolution along the years, through the

involvement of the majority of the teaching staff. Significant in recent years is the fact that more and more young researchers have obtained financed contracts as project directors, as a result of the development of the managerial capacity and experience gathered in time by the faculty research teams.

The results of the research have taken material form in the large number of scientific/technical papers published in ISI rated specialised magazines, products and technologies based on patents, homologations or innovations, prospective and technological studies, participation in national and international conferences.

The positive evolution of the research activity at UDJG is reflected in the large number of projects managed within the frame of the National Research, Development and Innovation Plan II (the 2007 competition) from the start of this competition until the present day, coordinating a number of 46 contracts and another 26 partnership contracts with other institutions in the country.

Another acknowledgement of the quality of the research carried out at UDJG is the participation in international competitions. Currently active are research themes within FP6 and FP7 Programmes, with a total value of approximately 100,000 Euro.

The sustained activity of the teams of researchers has made possible the establishment of faculty research centres, with highly equipped laboratories corresponding to national and international quality standards. Out of the total number of 28 research centres, 14 have been nationally accredited by CNCSIS, after a rigorous evaluation.

FACULTY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati is the main regional educational trainer of specialists in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics and Robotics, Industrial Engineering, Engineering and Management, Environmental Engineering and Automotive Engineering. The educational offer includes Master study programmes, which continue the Bachelor study programmes, and doctoral study programs in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering fields for the graduates who aim the technical knowledge improvement and the development of a solid career.

Tradition, Competence, Performance are the words describing, in the best way, the mission and the strategy of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the present-day competitive context within Romanian and European academic environment. Nowadays our faculty benefits of a continuous long tradition in training specialists who are ready to face the challenges of the labour market. The academics are competent, well-trained, selected by competition and evaluated on the basis of rigorous criteria, similar to the European ones. They continually improve their knowledge through post-graduate studies PhD programmes and postdoctoral fellowships in advanced countries, teaching and training programmes included in bilateral agreements signed with prestigious universities from the European Union, in ERASMUS and CEEPUS. The results of this policy are the continuing improvement of the quality in the didactic, research and scientific fields of activities. The adaptation of the educational offer to the changes and needs of the labour market are reflected in the training level of our graduates who understand that only through professional performance will keep up in a world characterised by competition.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is not only the main regional institution of higher education, training specialists for graduating programmes in the mechanical fields, with important implications in the economic environment of counties such as: Galaţi, Brăila, Vrancea, Tulcea, Vaslui, Buzău, Constanţa, but also one of the main national establishments of higher education. It is also a multidisciplinary scientific research centre, which has the resources to approach a wide range of fundamental and applied research topics.
