Next Friday, 29 May, is a  NORMAL school day.  The Pupil Free Day scheduled on the College calendar has been cancelled.

Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,  

BACK TO SCHOOL AND LOOKING FORWARD  

This week it has been wonderful to welcome back all of our students.  We have definitely been on something of a roller‐coaster ride over the past few months, but here we are back on the campuses again – and it is truly fantas c to have the College buzzing with the sounds of the students and staff, once more.  Our a endance rates this week have been excep onally high which is a clear sign that families are ready and able to take another step along the journey towards a ‘new normal’.  

The return to full‐ me, face‐to‐face learning has been an exci ng  me for students and teachers and, no doubt, a blessed relief for many parents and carers.  It is also a cri cal me for maximising learning opportuni es, both during and a er this period of transi on. 

 

While we cannot say things are back to ‘normal’ due to the number of restric ons s ll in place, we have certainly taken another step along the transi on pathway.  The  meframe for the College to provide the full range of ac vi es beyond the classroom such as assemblies, extra‐curricular ac vi es and community events remains unclear.  As such, the main priority for staff over coming weeks is to ensure that our students se le back into school and class rou nes as quickly as possible.    

The plans that the College has put in place for Term Two are based on the current advice from Western Australian health and educa on jurisdic ons.  You will appreciate that this advice  may change, dependent on the con nual evolu on of COVID‐19, and the College will con nue to respond accordingly.  Consequently, we have not planned too far ahead, but will provide  further updates as decisions are made.

While everyone wants to return to a ‘normal life’ as soon as possible, ensuring our campuses, family and friends remain safe and prepared is cri cal to achieving this.  To this end, we are encouraged to consider downloading the COVIDSafe app to help keep our community safe.   While downloading the app is completely voluntary, it has also been highly recommended by both the Australian and WA Governments to assist our health professionals and help stop the spread of COVID‐19.  With students, staff and parents/carers interac ng with each other and the broader community, the Bluetooth connec ons between phones will help inform them, in the worst‐case scenario, if they have been in the proximity of the Coronavirus.  The app can be downloaded here: h ps://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps‐and‐tools/covidsafe‐app#get‐the‐app  Please be assured that the health and wellbeing of our students and staff con nues to be our priority.  The cleaning of the College con nues to focus on high traffic areas; addi onal staff have been contracted and the strength of our cleaning products is of industry standard and good personal hygiene prac ces will con nue to be encouraged.  We also thank parents for their understanding in not coming onto the  campuses.  A consequence of the COVID‐19 situa on will be that our learning and faith sharing community, centred in Christ will emerge changed and be different.  As we con nue our ‘resurrec on’ from the difficul es and anxie es associated with this pandemic towards perhaps a less familiar des na on, we can take inspira on from the wisdom of Pope Francis.  He encourages us be the “necessary an bodies of jus ce, charity and solidarity” to “act as one people” and “bring the ointment of co‐responsibility to care for and not risk the lives of others by being kind and suppor ve to all.”  These aspira ons ring true in rela on to the manner in which our community has responded to the current pandemic.  Thank you for taking COVID‐19 seriously and I trust that the sacrifices we con nue to make during this  me are not in vain.  The overwhelming support within our Frayne family as evidenced by words of encouragement; acts of apprecia on and kindness; taking extra care during the busy drop‐off and pick‐up  mes and so much more is to be commended and celebrated as we come back to school and start to look forward.  

CONDOLENCES  

We recently learnt about the death of Harry Ellis’ (Year 9) grandmother in Adelaide.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Harry and the Ellis family during this difficult  me.  

Eternal rest grant to her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.  With regards and best wishes.  Mr Geoff Mills, Principal

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD  

The Ascension of Christ to his eternal glory in heaven is a feast of Hope and proclaims that Heaven is open and one day we will also follow him.  Celebra ng Christ returning to Heaven may not sound like a very good mo ve to rejoice. Surely, for the apostles, it would have been  a sad day to see Jesus for the last  me going to Heaven.  Their rela onship was going to change; they could no longer walk together or sit down near the lake to eat.  Yes, it was sad but necessary, since a new era was star ng…the  me of the Spirit and the  me of the Church.   

Christ is no longer physically present yet He is present, hidden from our human eyes but ac ve and visible in the Church through the eyes of faith.  When Christ was physically on earth, He could only be in one place at a  me but now He is closer than ever for us.  He is everywhere at all  mes.  We, the members of his Church might be convinced of following where He, our Head and Founder, has gone before us.  This is a cause for great happiness.  Christ is in Heaven with the nature of our humanity.  Now we can be confident that a human being is in Heaven and we must follow Him there.  Let’s stop gazing up to Heaven and get involved in the mission of spreading this great news like the disciples did.   

Pope Francis said: “Jesus' Ascension into Heaven thus allows us to know this reality that is so consoling on our journey: in Christ, true God and true man, our humanity has been brought to God.  He has opened the way.  He is like the leader of a mountain climbing party that is roped together.  He has reached the summit and pulls us to himself, leading us to God.  If we entrust our lives to him, if we let ourselves be guided by him, we are certain of being in safe hands.  We are never alone.  The crucified and risen Lord guides us.  With us there are many brothers and sisters who, in their family life and their work, in their problems and difficul es, in their joys and hopes, daily live the faith and bring, together with us, the Lordship of God's love to the world.  In Jesus Christ, risen and ascended into Heaven, we have an Advocate.”

Year 7 students were out filming an iMovie to tell the story and message of Pentecost.  Students were asked to capture how the Apostles felt before and a er receiving the Holy Spirit.  In the coming days they will be a emp ng to explain how the Holy Spirit could help people with their faith today.  Mr Saba no Pizzolante Year 7 Teacher

Sports News COVID‐19 SPORTING UPDATE  

It has been a quiet year so far in Sport at UFCC and the rest of the world.  Isola on was bad enough, but having no sport to watch and the looming threat of no AFL season le  a large number of us with a feeling of emp ness, a dark void that can only be filled with SPORT!  Well let me tell you there is light at the end of the tunnel!! 

  

This week the ACC announced the “Virtual” All Star Swimming Team for 2020.  The Swimming All Stars Team is an "All ACC" Honorary Team con‐sis ng of the best two performers in each event across all ten  Divisions, A to J.  That’s 10 carnivals and a huge 101 Schools!  In relay events the best four individual 50m performers are selected.  All  students selected in the All Stars Team are presented with a badge  and cer ficate of acknowledgment from the ACC.  There were no awards for age group champions in 2020 due to COVID‐19.  Congratula ons to Jed Bruce, Julian Bruce, Amy Ralph and Sienna  Hepworth for making the 2020 ACC ALL STARS Representa ve Team – A fantas c achievement. 

   

  

In less impressive news Year 11 and 12 SAS winter sport has been cancelled with UFCC one of only two schools willing to commit to the  compe on this year despite the op on of a modified program being proposed for Term Three.  There is a plan to play the remaining round for the summer compe on in Week 9 this term so stay tuned for an update regarding this.   We are s ll wai ng to hear back from other schools in regards to Years 7 ‐10 Wednesday a erschool SASJ sport.  An update is expected in  a few weeks with the green light to move ahead heavily dependent on government advice.  In light of this we are exploring a range of recrea‐on op ons to make up for the restricted ac vi es available due to COVID‐19. 

 Looking forward in these uncertain  mes we are hopeful that an Athle cs Carnival, both school based and ACC, will go ahead with a date to be confirmed and a modified “Virtual” ACC Cross Country may be given the go ahead in the coming week or two; so students are advised to keep an eye on the daily no ces for informa on regarding these!  The Year 7 and 8 Lightning Carnivals set for the beginning of this term have officially been moved to Term Four so fingers crossed, everything se les so this can go ahead.  All students in Year 7 and selected Year 8 teams will a end this and we are very excited and grateful that the ACC has accommodated this move.  The ACC Championship sports of Soccer and Netball are going ahead at this stage and we will field Senior teams for these.  Miss Vince and her amazing netballers will need to get back to training so that they can defend their  tle as the ACC Champion Netball School.  These teams will be predominately made from Senior Students in Years 11 and 12 but talented players in Years 9 or 10 are welcome to try out.  This  tournament model is likely to move to a one day carnival structure as opposed to the SAS entry pathway giving us an opportunity to have the best students, no ma er what year they are in, represent the school in this pres gious tournament!  That’s a wrap for sport.  Mr Mark Aldworth Director of Sport
