Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,

Welcome to Term 4 a er what I hope has been a wonderful break for you all. The early days of spring are certainly rewarding us with the beauty of God’s crea on and I hope that as we grad‐ually move towards summer we will begin to experience progressively warmer days.

FRAYNE DAY

This year we were again blessed with fine weather and it was clear that students, staff and family members embraced the opportunity to posi vely engage with and celebrate all aspects of this important celebratory day on the Frayne calendar. During the Mass at the beginning of the day, throughout the various ac vi es and during the concert in the a ernoon in which staff and students generously shared their talents for the entertain‐ment of others, the wonderful Frayne spirit was clearly evident. Thank you to all members of our community for making the day such a joyful celebra on. In par cular, our apprecia on is extended to Mary McGonigle for her overall co‐ordina on of the day; Sarah Quin for organising the Opening Mass; members of the College Grounds team ‐ Ian Johnston, Lee Barker, Steve Jaksic and Alan Chesshire – for their assistance with the complex logis‐cs of the day and to Veronica Parker for her general overseeing

of this major College event.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide and was established by the United Na ons Educa onal, Scien fic and Cultural Organisa on (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society. Important to note, in this instance, UNESCO define teachers as those suppor ng every stage of the academic journey from the early years through to adult learning, including voca onal and higher educa on. While the official date for World Teachers’ Day was Friday 5 October, this important day was recognised during gatherings of staff on both campuses at the beginning of Term 4. Representa ves from the Friends of Frayne expressed the apprecia on of the wider community to the teaching staff, and to every member of staff who, directly or indirectly, support our teachers, or create experiences which enhance the learning and faith sharing journey of our students. The individual and collec ve efforts of staff are also very much appreciated by our students. During the recent senior student leadership selec on process, one of the ques ons that nominees were asked to address in their applica on was: “What do you like best about Ursula Frayne Catholic College?” The following comments are representa ve of the general sen ments expressed:

“Ursula Frayne is a welcoming and diverse community where the students strive to represent the core values to the best of their ability. I appreciate the friendly and hospitable nature of the staff and students at Frayne in that they are always willing to go out of their way to benefit others.” “I love the teachers and students who make up this College, as they have taught me many important life lessons and helped me grow as an individual.” “The school has some simply outstanding teachers who always push us to do our best and reach our goals. The Frayne community as a whole is also welcoming and familiar.”

Ursula Frayne Catholic College aspires to be a place of learning and discovery where students can develop their unique gi s and talents and grow in rela onship with each other and with Jesus Christ. As such, the College is truly blessed with staff who are commi ed to this aspira‐on and work professionally to make it a lived reality.

STAFFING

As the term commences, we welcome back Maureen Johnson (VET/Careers Coordinator) from Long Service Leave during Term 3 who has returned refreshed and renewed a er her period of leave.

OUR ONGOING CHALLENGE

The students are to be commended on their efforts during Term 3. It has also been pleasing to receive many compliments from visitors to the College who have commented favourably on the friendly and polite manner of our students. I encourage all students to build on their efforts to date by: being an ac ve and involved learner, being caring and considerate towards their teachers and peers, being punctual to school each day and to their classes, being properly prepared for class and up to date with their school commitments, seeking assistance from their teachers when necessary, wearing their uniform with pride, being posi vely involved in the various aspects of College life as a “par cipant” rather than a “spectator”! Finally, we all need to remind ourselves from me to me that each of us has a personal responsibility for making Ursula Frayne Catholic College a happy and safe place in which to learn. As we constantly remind each other: At Frayne, we look a er each other and our campus(es).

Our condolences are given to Thomas Logan (Year 9) on the recent passing of his Nan. Our thoughts and prayers are with Thomas and his family during this difficult me. Chaplain’s Reflection

ST LUKE

The feast of St Luke is celebrated on 18 October and all Catholics and other Chris ans will celebrate this day giving thanks to God for the author of one of the gospels. St Luke was a Greek doctor who converted to Chris anity and accompanied St Paul in his missionary journeys. He was born in the city of An och, a part of modern day Turkey, an important centre of early Chris anity and renowned for arts and sciences. Educated as a doctor, St Luke was among the most cultured and cosmopolitan members of the city. He wrote a greater volume of the New Testament than any other single author, including the Acts of the Apostles, which narrates the early history of the Church up to St Paul's first stay in Rome. However, his most important work is the Gospel of St Luke. He is the only one to incorporate the personal tes ‐mony of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose role in Christ's life emerges most clearly in his gospel. As a Greek, he takes care to explain to Gen le readers Jewish customs and the meaning of Hebrew words. St Luke was also among the companions of St Paul who did not abandon him during his final imprisonment and death in Rome. When St Paul died in the year 67, St Luke con nued preaching throughout the Mediterranean and possibly also died as a martyr. Tradi on credits him as the one who painted the first icon of the Virgin Mary, when she was s ll alive. One of these sacred portraits ascribed to Him survives to this day in the Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome and is known by the tle "Salva on of the Roman People". St Luke is the Patronage of doctors, ar sts, bachelors, surgeons, farmers, physicians, bookbinders, brewers, butchers, glass makers and workers, goldsmiths, notaries, sculptors and lace makers. Board Briefing

The College Advisory Board met on Tuesday 24 September. As reported in previous newsle ers, the hearing at the State Arbitra on Tribu‐nal regarding the applica on of green space on 28 & 30 Teague Street took place on Wednesday 18 September un l Friday 20 September inclusive. The College’s Business Manager was present for all three days and briefed the Board members on the hearing. An outcome should be received in 2‐3 months’ me from the comple on of the hearing. This decision will be relayed to the College Community once a judgement has been reached. On behalf of the College Board, I would like to thank our members of the College Community for your sup‐port and pa ence in this ma er. Please be assured that the College Leadership Team, together with the College Board have con nuously been working together to obtain a posi ve outcome for the use of this land for future genera ons of our College Community, of which a large propor on are residents within the Town of Victoria Park. The College Annual General Mee ng will be held on Tuesday 26 November 2019. The main roles of the College Board are to plan for the present and future opera ons of Ursula Frayne and to manage all the finances asso‐ciated with the College. Criteria for membership of the Board as outlined in the Catholic School Board Cons tu on shall be:

possession of special skills that will be an asset to the Board; a deep interest in the welfare of all students and staff; a desire to give service to the Catholic School Community; a keenness to promote Catholic schooling; an ability to work co‐opera vely and construc vely with all other members of the Board; and a sufficiency of me to devote to Board du es such as, training and forma on opportuni es, the pre‐reading of mee ng papers, under‐

taking research, a endance at Board/Sub‐commi ee mee ngs and various College func ons. The College Board meets monthly on a Tuesday evening, with the Sub Commi ees also mee ng once a month. As a Board member you may be required to a end a mee ng approximately once every two weeks. At the end of November, Dr Janie Brown concludes her second term of office and Bronwen Frangs will complete her year of secondment. Stuart West will not be con nuing his term of office into 2020. As per the Board Cons tu on these three posi ons will be declared open and nomina ons called for. All members of our community are encouraged to consider nomina ng for these posi ons on the 2020 College Board as Elected Members. I would encourage any member of our community who may be interested in nomina ng for these posi ons to familiarise themselves with the role of the College Board, the School Board Cons tu on and the different role descrip ons for Board members. These can be found on the College Website. Earth Connections

On Tuesday several Year 10 students travelled to Cur n University to par cipate in an inaugural networking event for students and teachers to meet researchers in Earth Science from academia, industry and government. From the students: Earth Connec ons allowed us to expand our knowledge on Earth and Planetary Sciences and discuss possible solu ons to important global issues that we face today. We had the opportunity to meet a number of significant and experienced individuals who had spent many years researching and discussing these topics. We were also exposed to many interac ve and immersive ac vi es that allowed us to visualise what we had discussed prior. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gained valuable informa on on possible career pathways in the Earth and Space sector. Bathroom Project

Last term a group of Year 12 Art Students presented a proposal to repaint the female toilets located in the gymnasium area of the Duncan Street Campus. The team of Art Students put forth some design concepts which were drawn from personal experiences of ways to promote posi ve well‐being for girls. The project was thoroughly prepared with melines, budgets and designs presented to the College Execu ve. The girls toilets adjoining the gym now look amazing a er many hours of reless pain ng. I extend my thanks to the tremendous team that ini ated and completed this project under the leadership of Art Teacher Mrs Jeanie Walker. Day 1 of Term 4 got off to a sweet start as Friends of Frayne paid a special thankyou to our College for World Teacher’s Day. Forged in Sugar provided gorgeous packets of fudge and by all accounts, the packets were mostly empty by the final bell.
