A friend and fellow publisher recently said that ‘books have to do a better job for readers. No one’s waiting around for another superficial picture book; readers want in-depth information and background data.’ Just anoth-er way of saying that ‘nice to know’ should make way for ‘need to know’. We are the first to endorse these views, and this catalogue is full of de-sign and architecture books that zoom in on a subject and examine every aspect, right down to the smallest detail. Several examples:Float! explores ways in which bodies of water can be used for urban development. It provides food for thought that is of particular interest to architects, property developers and government officials. Engaging Spaces by Kossmann.dejong covers not only the work of this renowned design agency but also the process that goes into the design and realization of exhibitions and museum interiors in general. Night Fever 2 is a three-volume set of books on hospitality design. Definitely not limited to beautiful images – of which there are many, however – this publication provides readers with background and contact material, sketches, floor plans and other useful information on the restaurants, hotels and bars featured in its pages. The direction that Frame Publishers will continue to follow is based on offering information – not to mention inspiration! – that will help design-ers, architects, students and all those involved in the creative professions to upgrade their work. The success of this approach is evident in the number of titles that have led to the publication of one or more sequels: these include Night Fever, Grand Stand, Powershop and Material World. In addition to our fine collection of books, buoyed by the ongoing suc-cess of Frame and Mark we recently launched the publication of Elephant, our third magazine. Elephant represents Frame Publishers’ initial steps into the world of art and visual culture. Books on these subjects seem certain to appear in our next catalogue.

GOODSAntonio Gardoni

Antonio Gardoni, who spent years in London working with Ron Arad and cofounding Jump Studios, currently operates a design studio in Brescia, Italy, and a branch in Beijing. Gardoni and partners Giovanni Pazzaglia and Julie Du believe in the power of combining marketing and design tools, and of using spaces and objects to communicate.

The client’s brief was to create a temporary store aimed to guest different typologies of products on a rotation base. Various items are sold in the store: clothes, accessories, home decoration, guitars, hats and books. The project’s location was a large empty space in an outlet village on the skirting board of Brescia. How to display the possible products without knowing their characteristics and identity was the main issue to be resolved and the whole final projects it’s deeply shaped by this problem. A floor to ceiling surface was painted in a common grey colour revealing a yellow pop interior trough many different openings. Door’s hinges, sliding guides, pivoting systems, counterweighted panel, accordion doors, roller blinds and drawers are only a few of the tricks used to transform grey into light to reveal countless and flexible

display opportunities. Video and led panels were introduced to support the continuously changeable in-store communication, together with a series of fluorescent tubes that can be switched on and off to create writing. A series of trolleys with different dimensions and possible accessories can be used to occupy the central space and when not in use they can be stored in the small back stockroom. Outside, a large movie-screen signage informs passers-by about the temporary commercial activity inside.

Ippolito Fleitz Group is a multidisciplinary, internationally operating design studio based in Stuttgart who call themselves identity architects. They aim to develop architecture, products and communication that are part of a whole and yet distinctive in their own right. The team conceives and constructs buildings, interiors and landscapes next to the development of products and communication measures.

The refurbishment of Conradt Optik coincides with the business being handed over to the next generation of owners, who wish to position the business with a select segment of brands and a focus on individual customer care. The entire building façade was renewed as part of the renovations, thereby making the shop’s new profile immediately evident from the outside. Long windows stretch down to the ground, giving maximum insight into the representative interior, which in itself becomes the window display. The interior can be accessed through one of two entrances, both of which lead to the central service counter. An organically curving rear wall masks the workshop areas and divides the shop into zones. The glasses are displayed in three recessed horizontal bays, which span

almost the entire length of the rear wall Fitted into the rear wall are long backlit presentation bays and flush-set drawers for accessible product storage. Parallel to the windows on the longitudinal side are three floating displays. These are set at a slight angle and are reserved for the opticians’ range of sunglasses. The recessed ceiling is decorated with a pattern of fine lines and differentiates the customer service area from the shop floor.

INDUSTRY OF NATURE | COMING SOON | 7

inDustry of nAtureANoTHeR APPRoACH To eCologY

Although information on ecology and sustainability is published and posted daily, it’s obvious that most people feel powerless when faced with the state of our environment today. Materials and technologies claim a dominant position with regard to ecological problems, but we sometimes forget that these may not always be the key to good, comprehensive solutions. The use of materials is only one approach to the larger ecological issue, which clearly has philosophical, metaphysical, economical and social implications. The world of nature, on the other hand, is an amazing arena filled with smart models of simple and sustainable behaviours. Nature undeniably questions the pretentiously authoritative status that humans have allocated themselves, and nature is the best example of a wholly sustainable and autonomous industry. The ecology issue is not only unavoidable; it offers us a great opportunity for making drastic changes in the way we think and act. Industry of Nature targets creative professionals in search of information, inspiration and tools for augmenting their work, expanding their imaginations and improving the world in which we live. The book combines interviews with examples taken from nature, architecture, engineering and design. A profusion of photographs and drawings bring the ideas and relevant information to life.

NeW ReTAIl DeSIgN

As its successful predecessors, Powershop 3 unveils the latest and greatest retail interiors from all over the world. Featuring around 175 shop and showroom interiors, the book reflects the current trends in this field. Included projects range from supermarkets to bakeries, from luxury fashion boutiques to sneaker shops and jewellers. Each design is featured on two to six pages that are filled with photo’s, drawings, sketches and of course a description of the design and the designer. The project text explains how the designers made the client’s store and products stand out, how they incorporated the clients identity in an environment, how the concept developed, what materials were used and how the design was executed. The showcased work is created by world-famous designers as well as young design talents and is selected based on their original concept, creativity, innovative approach or the project’s unmistakable wow-factor.

colour huntinGHoW ColouR INFlueNCeS WHAT We BuY, MAKe AND Feel

Colour plays a vital role in visual experiences. Professionals in design, fashion, architecture and art are constantly exploring to find good solutions regard-ing colour. In a globalizing world, colour requires less time to ‘read’ than any other means of communication. Research aimed at the urban environment shows how colour identifies cultures and attracts attention. Scientific studies proved that senses such as touch and taste are stimulated as well. Projects devoted to wellbeing and healing provide solid evidence of an increasing interest in colour. The book is divided into three chapters: commerce (sell, buy), aesthetics (make), and wellbeing (feel). Richly illustrated pages are followed by case studies and interviews. Experts explain why colour matters in branding and how knowledge of colour and its effects determines the selection of colours that designers apply to their work and the materials involved. Colour Hunting presents projects that pioneer techniques and experiments with fabrication processes on a small scale, with a do-it-yourself attitude, as well as large-scale research projects on paints and coatings, carried out by international companies.

Where they creAteThe successful weblog Where they Create documents studios where creativity takes place by showing the work of interior photographer Paul Barbera. Now it’s time to make a book. Where they Create captures 35 studios from all around the world. Studio’s of painters, sculptors, designers, architects, advertising agencies and many others, some very well known, others only starting out. Important to Barbera is that the photographed studio’s are somehow connected to someone Barbera knows and that he likes the creative space or the work they do. Where they Create is also a break from the work Barbera does for several interior magazines, where everything is styled and considered. Instead the images for this book are as Barbera finds the spaces, un-styled and raw. Just the way they are. Each project is described with personal information from the owner of the studio and Barbera himself.

Following the smashing success of Material World 1 and Material World 2, the third edition in this series offers another hundred-plus materials and semi-finished products carefully selected by matériO, the library of emerging materials. This exclusive collection includes modular materials, undulating wall coverings, fish-skin leathers, photovoltaic textiles, LED lighting systems powered by wafer-thin batteries, and much more. Material World 3 promises to satisfy the demand for product information, technical specifications, and suggestions for ways in which to use the latest fascinating materials and finishes. MatériO summarized 15 basic concepts to help novices gain a better understanding of this complex topic and to point out, even to the well-informed reader, aspects of materials that are often overlooked. What do FSC, COV, Cradle to Cradle, and oxo-degradable mean? What are Damascus steel, float glass, and electroluminescence? What’s the story behind the invention of nylon, or of Velcro? Find the answers to these and many other relevant questions in Material World 3.

Mobility plays an important role in the evolution of any modern society. The development of various modes of sustainable, efficient transportation is undoubtedly one of the most important prerequisites for the success of future mobility. Today, it is not only the designers working for mobility manufacturers who define what this future will look like. Many architects, artists and designers have come up with innovative concepts that offer fresh and surprising perspectives on mobility design. Accelerate features the work of approximately ten designers from within the mobility industry and twice as many creative professionals from other disciplines or fields. Their visions and designs – some conceptual, some completed – are explained in individual interviews and illustrated with an abundance of drawings, 3D visuals and photographs. This book transcends the automotive sector, offering an insight into the world of bikes, motorcycles, yachts and airplanes, not to mention an additional array of innovative vehicles and systems designed to move people and goods.

product description panels, referred to by Arno Design as ‘symbolic rays of light’, guided visitors through the stand towards the central lounge area. Selected products were showcased in container-sized rooms called ‘experience worlds’ which were accessed from the lounge. The digital lamp control Xitec was presented in one such space emblazoned with the slogan ‘Bright Ideas’. Depending on the visitor’s movements, floor sensors triggered luminous rows of blinking lights that spelt out texts, or a monitor showed an applauding audience. The Talexx lighting solution was showcased in another experience world under the slogan, ‘Switch’, and was accompanied by a bold graphic of a smiley face and screenings of informative short films. The ‘Ecolution’ presentation brought the company’s environmental

credentials to the attention of visitors. It featured a waterfall, screens showing clips focusing on conservation and plants set with small monitors, on which key ecological terms appeared. CAMPAIGN DESIGN is located in Munich,

Overhead, several enormous mesh panels were suspended from the ceiling. Each was made of Cascade Coil, the product showcased by DAAC Holdings. Extending the gold theme, a mirrored disc was hung in each Cascade Coil curtain; seen together, the graded shapes formed a sphere that appeared to float, as if by magic, over the stand. Underfoot, fluorescent lighting set in translucent acrylic boxes emitted a strong glow that reinforced the intensity of the surroundings. With its rigorous aesthetic, Hassell’s stand design expressed the strong, yet lightweight nature of DAAC Holding’s product. Since gold suggests quality,

by association, Cascade Coil was given an aspirational appeal. Founded in 1938, Hassell is a privately-owned network of design studios located across Australia and Asia. Key disciplines are architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and planning. Each studio comprises individuals with a collective spirit whose work is informed by Hassell’s international culture, combined resources and collective experience.DAAC Holdings, specialists in

Float! proposes a new way of building: on water instead of on land. Although the concept may seem revolutionary, it is an obvious solution to overcrowded metropolises. The majority of world cities are situated on the water and have too little space where it’s most needed: in the city centre. Building on water allows inner-city areas to expand. Floating buildings have many advantages. They are both flexible and mobile. A buoyant structure can be moved to make space for a new building, decreasing the need for the demolition of development that still has a productive economic future. Floating buildings outwit changing water levels by rising and falling with the tide and, in so doing, promote a more responsible water management. They leave no scars on their sites, permitting planners to actively meet the demands of the moment. It’s up to the architects of the climate-change generation to respond to the world’s spatial needs with smart, sustainable proposals. Float! will help them to do just that.

portrAit + lAnDscApe M+R INTeRIoR ARCHITeCTuRe This year M+R interior architecture celebrates its tenth birthday. To mark the occasion, the Eindhoven firm decided to publish a book with an overview of their work and their perception of it. The strikingly designed book contains a wealth of visual material, backed up in terms of content by texts written by various professionals and by M+R itself. Ten years of designing public spaces has not only resulted in a wide range of projects, it has also formed and honed M+R’s view of their profession. Founders Hans Maréchal and Marie-Louise Rooijmans explore the dilemmas and conclusions of this first decade in more depth in their self-penned essay. They see the interior architect as the director of a complicated design process, in which the user (the visitor or the occupant) should take a central position. How that works out in practice is covered in publications by and interviews with various journalists and clients. The many attractive photos and plans give a good picture of the results. According to M+R, the interior architect continually needs to maintain a dynamic balance between personal and public aspects. This field of tension is captured in the title of the book, Portrait + Landscape. The two concepts also served as the guiding principle for the book design. This book, with its entirely individual character, is a complete edition about the work of

M+R interior architecture.

Creating a good exhibition is about telling a multi-dimensional and interactive story with a balanced and broad array of modern media. That is the task of the exhibition designer. The challenge is to translate often complex and scientific information into a narrative environment that appeals to a wide audience. Highlighted in this book are 30 narrative spaces orchestrated by renowned Dutch exhibition architecture office Kossmann.dejong. Featured environments range from permanent presentations in museums and visitor centres to temporary exhibitions, among them the Urbanian Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Full-page photos accompanied by written explanations offer insight into how these narrative spaces are composed. Sketches, plans and sections make the designs fully comprehensible.A separate chapter explains 12 key concepts — interaction, abstraction, media mix, routing and more — that inform most narrative environments. Highlighted by essays written by specialists, Engaging Spaces covers all aspects of exhibition design and is sure to be of interest to students, professionals, and other inquiring minds.

Design Academy Eindhoven was founded in 1947. Today the school has a reputation, at home and abroad, as a highly contemporary and virtually unequalled design institute. Programmes offered cover a wide range of design-related disciplines – from product, graphic, new-media and automotive design to city planning, interior architecture and trend specialization. This book casts a light on the 60-year history of the academy. Nearly every important Dutch designer is included, most of whom have studied and/or taught at the academy. House of Concepts also offers a philosophical and critical view of design as a whole, and of Dutch design in particular, set in an international context.

Expect work from well-known names such as Karim Rashid, Steven Holl and Jun Aoki but also interiors from promising young designers. All projects are documented in high quality photography accompanied by in-depth articles, floor plans, project details and contact information. Once no more than gathering spots with domestic interiors, cafés and bars have evolved into places for relaxation where people go to escape the monotony of everyday life. The 40 innovative project featured in Behind Bars are proof that more and more designers rely on high-tech solutions to produce a look geared to these demands. Their interiors not only demonstrate a high level of creativity and variety but also push the limits of style, theme and materials. The result is one spectacular space after another. Each café or bar in the book is accompanied by quality images, floor plans and a full description based on an interview with the designer.

The atmosphere is a useful and meaningful metaphor for the artistic climate. Here, too, one can distinguish various layers that can be analysed and reduced to the basic components of any creative effort: form, colour and material. Atmosphere explores seven atmospheric layers that not only exist simultaneously but can easily merge to form new combinations, over and over again. It delves into a renewed interest in handicrafts, into creases and crinkles as generators of form, into nature as an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Learn how designers deal with the chill perfection of computer-aided design and how they counter a period of baroque extravagance. Each chapter is lavishly illustrated with recent work by top designers, architects and artists.

Nowhere in the world does the interior design of a shop influence sales as it does in Japan. Retailers spare no trouble or expense when planning and realising the design or renovation of their premises. A particularly trendsetting sector is the world of fashion. Powershop presents the best retail designs by ten Japanese interior architects, each of whom agreed to a personal interview. Shops and showrooms created for established names like Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto and Nissan share centre stage with numerous smaller, cutting-edge boutiques. In-depth reviews of more than 46 projects are complemented by full-shot and close-up photographs. And that’s just a tip of the iceberg.

Rainbow Church is said to be your dream project. Where did the idea come from?I was in my early 20s when I visited Henri Matisse’s Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence in France. The chapel has three sets of stained-glass windows that feature three colours: sapphire blue, emerald green and lemon yellow. Matisse’s vibrant colours suffuse the chapel. Visiting was like bathing in the sunlight of the Provence. Ever since that visit, I have been dreaming of designing an architectural project in which people experience light with all their senses. Rainbow Church, as presented in Museum Beyond Museum in Seoul, is the first step towards the realization of this dream. How did your dream develop into a project?I wanted to present a project using small trapeziform prisms at Design Miami 2007, where

I received the Designer of the Year Award. But certain restrictions prevented me from making the installation I had in mind. When I was invited to mount a solo exhibition in Seoul, the organizers asked me to design something completely new. I decided to continue working on the idea of a wall of prisms, but on a much larger scale. Can you tell us how you made Rainbow Church? I used approximately 500 crystal prisms – made of clear acrylic resin – to create a huge ‘stained-glass’ wall that was 9.2 m high and 1.6 m wide. Each prism weighed between 4 and 5 kg and measured 40 cm in height. The side of one triangle was 10 cm. If we had been making a permanent architectural volume, we would have connected the prisms tightly together. But here we just used glue.

You’re talking about very large prisms.Small prisms would have produced a lot of small rainbows, and in an exhibition space as large as the one in Seoul, that’s not the effect we were after. Besides, a small-scale project was not in line with my original plan. I wanted to use bigger prisms. The size of these prisms was just right, and they were not too heavy. The craftsmen who built the work were able to handle them easily. To test the light effect, we had made a mock-up of the wall at our studio, using triangular prisms. After several experiments, I figured out the best combination of light, form and construction for achieving an effect very similar to sunlight passing through a stained-glass window. The light we used is very much like natural light. How did the venue influence the design? The main issues were where to place the >>>

Elephant is a quarterly international magazine on art and visual culture, addressing the confident metropolitan consumers, who are very clear of what they like and have their own sense of style. Elephant looks at how creative individuals protest against the corporate nature of things, taking the initiative into their own hands and setting up new inde-pendent ventures. Elephant visits art and design studios, peers over shoulders, steps on graffiti artists’ toes, dis-turbs rehearsals, interrupts takes, rides fixed-gear bikes, and plays the latest computer games. Elephant’s tone of voice is direct, sincere, and multidisciplinary. Elephant believes it’s time for less cynicism and more encouragement for outbursts of spontaneity – think of those that gave birth to Futurism, Dadaism and Surrealism. Elephant is the first and only visually oriented art magazine that features over 200 pages of high- quality, up-to-date, original creative material from all over the world.
