This is a special year for the Archdiocese of Chicago as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities’ centennial year is truly a celebration for all of us because its great tradition of charitable care has included the support of volunteers and donors from every parish in the archdiocese. For 100 years, through every era of war, peace, poverty and prosperity, Catholic Charities has worked together with the faithful to fulfill the Gospel mission to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, welcome the stranger, comfort the afflicted, and bring hope to the hopeless.

Each year on Mother’s Day, we have an opportunity to make a financial contribution to the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection. THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The Twenty-third Psalm, today’s responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads “Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage” (Psalm 23:4) connects this week’s scrip-tures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckon-ing us into a deeper rela onship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our bap sm, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

EL LLAMADO DEL BUEN PASTOR

El salmo responsorial de hoy es el Salmo 23 y sin duda es el más conocido de los salmos. ST. JOSEPH PARISH CENTENNNIAL CELEBRATION OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA

St. Joseph Parish is hosting a prayer celebration in honor of Our Lady of Fatima after 8:00 A.M. Mass on Saturday, May 13th. The event will take place, weather permitting, in the Garden of the Innocents behind the Church. You might want to bring a chair as there is limited seating in the Garden. Weather not permitting, we will hold the event in the Church.

The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal six times, May 13th to October 13th in 1917. She asked them to pray the Rosary every day to bring peace to the world (and an end to World War I).

Please join us as we prayer the Rosary, Litany, sing songs and process around the Parish grounds to honor Our Lady of Fatima and respond to her request. This is a BILINGUAL event. There will be an event each 13th of the month, culminating in a Rosary Rally on October 13th. Please watch the Bulletin for details.

It’s a Repeat!

All of the St. Joseph teachers have developed Interdisciplinary Thematic Units that are rigorous, standards-based, student-centered, and address the different learning needs of all students. Our students began these exciting, new, multi-age thematic units on, Monday, May 1. The thematic units will integrate content from the core academic areas and art.

Kindergarten, first, and second grade will blend their students to participate in these thematic units. These young learners will travel on a safari, experience the rainforest, or investigate dinosaurs and fossils.

Grades 3 and 4 will mix for the entire day to study either space or sports. Grades 5 and 6 will mix for the entire day as well to dive into ocean mysteries or go back in time to learn about the Medieval Times. Our seventh and eighth grade students have selected the two topics of technology or war. One group will study creating websites, apps, work on programming,

and using technology in everyday life. The other group will drive their investigation of different aspects of war, the effect of war on civilians, the technology behind war, our current world situation, and our Catholic responsibility to work for peace and justice in the world.

Each Friday during the unit, teachers will send home a detailed letter describing all the activities that the children participated in during the week. This will give the parents a window into all of the exciting educational endeavors that your child experienced during the week. Our thematic units are organic and authentic.

Es Repetición! Todas nuestras maestras han desarrollado Unidades Temáticas Interdisciplinarias que son

rigurosas, basadas en estándares, centradas en los estudiantes, y abordan las necesidades de aprendizaje de todos los estudiantes. Nuestros estudiantes comenzaran este emocionante, nuevo, multi-edad unidad temática el lunes, 1 de mayo. Las unidades temáticas integran el contenido de las áreas académicas centrales y el arte.

Kinder, primer y segundo grado se combinaran por la tarde para participar en las unidades temáticas. Estos joven estudiantes viajaran al safari, experimentaran la selva tropical, o investigaran dinosaurios y fósiles.

Los grados de 3o y 4o se combinaran todo el dia y estudiaran deportes o el espacio. Los grados de 5o y 6o también se combinaran todo el dia y estudiaran los misterios del océano o Tiempos Medievales. Nuestros estudiantes de séptimo y octavo grado han elegido los dos temas de tecnología y la guerra. Un grupo estudiara la creación de sitios web, aplicaciones, el trabajo en la programación y el uso de la tecnología en la vida cotidiana. El otro

grupo conducirá su investigación en los diferentes aspectos de la guerra, el efecto de la guerra en los civiles, la tecnología detrás de la guerra, nuestra situación mundial actual y la responsabilidad Católica de trabajar por la paz y justicia en el mundo.
