The Journey to the Cross

On the Mondays of Lent (except March 21st) there will be a Lenten Holy Hour in the Upper Church as we prepare for Holy Week and Easter Sunday. The hour will include Eucharistic Adoration, Benedic-tion, and Confessions. All are welcome.

February 15 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pmFebruary 15 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pm February 22 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pmFebruary 22 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pm February 29 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pmFebruary 29 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pm

.

Lent 2016

Our Lenten observances will include the following:

• On Fridays during Lent, Mass will also be celebrated at 12:15 p.m. in the Upper Church. The 8:00 a.m. Mass on Fridays remains unchanged.

• These Friday 12:15 Masses will be preced-ed by Confessions at the usual time (12 minutes before to 5 minutes before the Mass). Confessions will also be available after these Masses till 1:15 p.m.

• Stations of the Cross will be prayed on Fri-days at 7:30 p.m.

• A “Soup & Salad Supper” will be available on Fridays during Lent from 6:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. in the church basement. The supper will be open to all and prepared and served by parishioner volunteers. A free will offering will be gratefully accepted. Additional details will appear in next week’s bulletin. These suppers are intend-ed to make us mindful of foregoing a more substantial dinner on the Fridays of Lent in favor of a lighter meal that does provide sustenance while also highlighting the Len-ten themes of sacrifice, self-denial, and penitential practices. Opportunities to (a) socialize with fellow parishioners and (b) get a quick bite to eat before going upstairs to the church for Stations of the Cross are also features of these suppers.

• Lenten Holy Hour on the Mondays of Lent beginning at 7:30 p.m.

May our Lenten journeys nourish our minds and hearts, strengthen us against the chains of sin, and bring us closer to the Sa-cred Heart of Jesus.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5

Dear Parishioners of St. Michael’s, During the past eighteen months or so I’ve experienced many “firsts”…some long-awaited and long-

anticipated; others so sudden and so unexpected that words cannot describe them: my very first Mass as an or-dained priest, my first parish assignment (at the Cathedral in Trenton), my first Mass as the celebrant at the Ca-thedral, my first days as a teacher (8th Grade CCD and Confirmation preparation at the Cathedral), my first visit to the Bishop’s office followed five days later by my first day at St. Michael’s and my first Confessions, first Masses, and first homilies as your parish priest. Throughout this journey, it’s been a blessing and a privilege for me to serve the Church, the Great Diocese of Trenton, and the good People of God as one who has been called to the Holy Priesthood of Jesus Christ. For this blessing and privilege I am most grateful…grateful to God our Father.

I am also most grateful to you, the parishioners of St. Michael’s, for welcoming me into your parish, into your lives, and into your living of our Catholic faith. A priest cannot “be” a priest unless the people open their minds and open their hearts to hear the Word of the Lord and to receive the Sacraments of Jesus and to allow the priest to help them and guide them as shepherd and as friend through our shared journeys toward sanctification. You have been extremely generous, kind, and supportive in all these things as well as in your financial support of the parish and in your many thoughtful Christmas gifts that were delivered to the rectory, Christmas cards, New Year’s messages, and kind words of welcome and encouragement. I thank YOU – and I thank God – for your kindnesses and generosity. You are in my daily prayers and I ask that you please pray for me and for all priests and for all those who serve God, His Church, and His people.

As we proceed into 2016, may I wish you one more time a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May the Spirit of Christmas continue to enlighten and enrich your lives throughout the year. May God bless you…May our Blessed Mother pray and intercede for you…and may St. Michael protect and defend you.

With prayers and kind regards, Fr. John Butler, Temporary Administrator

Reprinted from 1/24/16’s bulletin (the “blizzard weekend”)

Reminder! Attendance and the collections were, of course, significantly affected at all the Masses during the January 23-24 weekend’s snowstorm. Parish expenses were increased because of snow removal. Revenues were down. Please re-member to place your January 24 donations and envelopes in the collection basket this weekend or next weekend, mail them to the parish office, or drop them off at the office. Thank you!

STEPHEN & PADUAN MINISTRY They are YOUR Ministries

Our Stephen and Paduan Ministers made 12 commun-ion visits, 4 Elder/Sick Care visits, and 1 Stephen Ministry visits this past week. We pray that we have helped to bring God’s love and peace to His peo-ple in need.

Who we are! “Our true worth does not consist in what human beings think of us. What we really are, consists of what God knows us to be.” -St. John Berchmans

Our prayers to our ‘all-knowing and loving’ God should be to strive always to see ourselves as God sees us rather than as others do. Pray that with His help, you may continue to grow and be-come the person that God wants you to be for all eternity Our Stephen and Paduan Ministers are available for our parishioners - to visit the sick; the elderly; and bring Communion. Please contact us if you need us – 732-483-0360, Ext. 120.

If you would like to receive your Annual Contribution Statement for 2015, and you have not already completed a Request Form, please contact the Rectory for as-sistance at 732-222-8080. If you use the Faith Direct program, you can log on to their website and view your giv-ing history.

The Rectory Office will be closed on Monday, February 15th in observance of Presidents’ Day. Daily Mass and Confessions will be at the usual 8:00 am time.
