POPE FRANCIS—PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY
Universal: Interreligious Dialogue, That sincere dialogue among men and women of different faiths may produce the fruits of peace and justice.
Evangelization: Christian Unity, That by means of dialogue and fraternal charity and with the grace of the Holy
Spirit, Christians may overcome divisions
From the Pastor: Growing through Conflict
Two weeks ago I preached an impassioned sermon on Confirmation. Please, know that it came from the heart. One
teacher taught us in preaching: “Read it full, think it clear, pray it hot, and let it go!” I didn’t have time to think it as clear as I
wanted and so it came out just as news for some folks and not necessarily the Good News. I sincerely apologize to those
parishioners who felt trampled, it wasn’t my goal.
Paradoxically, for other parishioners it was a homerun! While giving me a hug, one parishioner commented, “Thanks for
the spiritual spanking, Father; it’s what we needed!” I don’t know that a “spiritual spanking” was the goal, but I was indeed
trying to challenge us to go further and deeper in our spiritual and communal life. I don’t know about you, but my own words
and the fallout from the sermon have definitely challenged me. Come, Holy Spirit!
One thing I realized is that I had never introduced the confirmands to the parish. Doh! The easiest way for the most people
to get to know the confirmands is for me to introduce them and I never did that. Other ways, of course, include asking the
Youth Minister Jason, and/or volunteering to help with the Confirmation and Youth program on Sundayevenings. Our
Confirmation program doesn’t end this week but extends through the school year.
God can use all things for good and he has been with that sermon. Keep talking and thinking and praying. Then, let’s put
the things the Lord reveals to us into action! Jason can’t do it on his own. One area that both he and I need support in is
organization, so if you have a gift there…
On a different note, but related, how did your fast or praying rosaries for the kids go?
Did you forget? Don’t sweat it, but maybe pray a rosary today for the kids.
Did you refuse to do it? What’s that about? Was pride underlining that decision?
Was it a blessing? Praise the Lord!
Was it tough? Kind of exciting, though, to be a part of something great, isn’t it?
Did the devil fight hard against you and your love for the Lord and his kids? Spiritual battle is real. St. Paul wrote, “For we are
not fighting against things flesh and blood, but rather principalities and powers…”
It really has been a blessed week for me and I’m thankful for you and to be here at St. Alice.
Love, Fr. Jaspers
P.S.
We lost one of our longest and one of our newest parishioners this week: Eileen Davis and Patricia “Patti” Booth. Eileen
has been a stalwart of the St. Alice for a very long time. I saw a picture from her wedding with a very young Fr. Solar
(Founding Pastor) the day we gave her the last rites of Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum. She died peacefully that night
at 2am Thursday morning. Providentially, she was the scheduled Mass intention for that morning.
Patti died in a car accident on Hwy 126. She had recently returned to the practice of her faith and was a beautiful
soul. Most of you don’t know her, but she sang Oh, Holy Night on Christmas Eve and has been a fixture at coffee and donuts
with her big smile and short hair.
Many of us have read about the promise of the grace of final repentance attached to certain devotions. I don’t know if
these women ever prayed one of those novenas, but it is beautiful to see how these two women, each in her own way, died in
the embrace of the Lord and his Church. Let us offer our prayers for their journey to the Lord and for their families. Prayers
also for a parish family that lost a child recently to miscarriage. Peace and God bless.

Adoption has the dimension of connection -- not
only to your own tribe, but beyond, widening the scope
of what constitutes love, ties and family. It is a larger
embrace. By adopting, we stretch past our immediate
circles and, by reaching out, find an unexpected sense
of belonging with others.

RUTH'S CLOSET UPDATE
Ruth's Closet, a project of St. Alice Church, helps
needy children in our elementary schools. We
provide much needed clothing and shoes year round,
not just at Christmas. We rely on a grant from
Catholic Charities and financial donations from
parishioners. We got off to a slow start this Fall, word
of mouth takes time. However, we have gotten a
boost recently thanks to an amazing brochure Shirley
Liberante designed. Requests are starting to pick
up. Parents are very appreciative of our help. Thank
you for all your help and support.
Scout Sunday Feb 7th!
Scouts of the Parish are
invited to wear their uniforms to Mass.
In the Gospel today, Jesus shows
us that we are called to place gospel
values before any other values and to be
willing to put our lives on the line for them.
Taking care of God’s poor is indeed living
gospel values.
This past October, through your gifts, the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist 24
families, providing $855.00 in clothing, and $630.00
in miscellaneous household items, for a total of
$2,335.00 THANK YOU!

CHURCH CLEAN-UP UPDATE
Thank you to the Eucharistic Ministers for a great turnout
and an outstanding job of cleaning the Church and the
Parish Center. We wiped down the pews, dewebbed and
dusted, cleaned the windows and doors in the church,
vacuumed, swept and mopped, cleaned the bathrooms,
wiped down the chairs and baseboards and blew the leaves
outside.
Our next cleaning will be February 13th from 9am – 11am
with the Lectors.
All are welcome to come and participate. Just bring yourself
and we will provide the rest. Many hands make light work.
Together we can do great things for OUR church.

beginning at 9 a.m. Dr. Shawn Keough, professor of
Church History and Systematic Theology at Mount
Angel Seminary, will consider his chosen topic,
"Repentance and the Mercy of God in St.
Ambrose." Exploring the theme of repentance and
mercy will not only serve to introduce us to one of the
great Doctors of the Western Church, but it will help
deepen our own investment in this Year of Mercy and
the season of Lent that will have begun only a few
days earlier on February 10.
The cost is $15; Students $5. For more information
