Harold W. Jacobs received the South Carolina Bar Foundation’s 2012 DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award for meritorious service to the law and community. This annual recognition is the most prestigious statewide award members of the South Carolina Bar can bestow on a fellow attorney. The award was presented during the Bar Convention’s plenary luncheon on January 25 at the Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.

Jacobs is senior counsel at Nexsen Pruet with a practice primarily in litigation emphasizing the areas of aviation, products liability, antitrust and unfair trade practices. After earning his undergraduate degree from Clemson University and graduating from the United States Naval Academy, Jacobs completed his Juris Doctor at the University of South Carolina School of Law. The School of Law Alumni Foundation later honored him with the Compleat Lawyer Platinum Award, which is given to only three attorneys per section each year for outstanding professional and civic achievement.

Jacobs is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and participates as a member of the American Bar Association. Celebrated with multiple listings in Best Lawyers in America, Jacobs has also held leadership positions including president of the South Carolina Bar and South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association, member of the American Judicature Society board of directors, chair of the South Carolina Supreme Court Commission on Character and Fitness and chair of the South Carolina Judicial Conference Committee on Judicial Reform.

In his community, Jacobs has served as senior warden on the vestry of St. Michael’s and All Angel’s Episcopal Church as well as a member of the South Carolina Higher Education Commission and Patriots’ Point Authority Commission.

About the DuRant AwardSelection criteria include meritorious service to the law and the community. Established in 1980 to honor living members of the South Carolina Bar, the DuRant Award recipient is nominated and selected by his or her professional peers. The Foundation established the award in memory of Charlton DuRant, a well-known Manning attorney who served as state senator and special associate justice of the S.C. Supreme Court.

Congratulations to Jack D. Griffeth, Bar Foundation President, who has been selected as a recipient of the 2013 Leadership in Law Award. Jack is one of only 24 attorneys statewide to receive the designation.

Don’t be surprised when you see Bar Foundation Past President Wallace K. Lightsey make his way over to the drums at the Gala on March 22. Though he spends his days in the courtroom as a trial lawyer with Wyche, he has been known to keep the beat for Ancient Grease, a 50s band that Wallace first played in during his days at Dreher High School.

Wallace’s musical journey actually began with the piano in the eighth grade. “My parents forced me to take piano lessons,” he explained. “They kept saying, ‘You’ve got musical talent. You need to stick with it.’ ” He stuck with music, but left the ivory keys for his drum set that he was given for Christmas that year. After the first year of banging around, Wallace started investing in his gift – joining the band program at Dreher High School, taking private lessons and becoming a member of Bop and the Zeroes. Dreher was where the Wall siblings (known for their vocal harmonies), Wallace and his current band mate came together to form what would be Ancient Grease.

After George Lucas’ movie, American Graffiti, premiered in 1973, 50s music was on the rise. Wallace said he and the rest of the band got swept up in it. “At that time, we thought it was funny to slick our hair back, put on socks and penny loafers.” The band’s love for 50s music shot them to popularity. They performed at sock hops throughout Columbia and earned regular gigs at the city’s night club, The Second Level. Wallace remembers his first performance. “Loved it,” he said. “There’s just something special about performing.”

Years later, a band once made up of high school students now includes trial lawyer Wallace, an engineering professor, a chaplain, restaurant manager and more. While life has taken them down different roads, a common bond remains among them. “We’ve all kept our love of [music] and we have a great time playing together.”
