A Star is Born IN THE MOUNTAIN SKIES One of our new programs in 2013 is The Birth Center Fund, established to support the mothers, babies and families of Summit County and surrounding communities. Nearly 400 babies are born at our hospital each year. The Birth Center Fund will provide vital technology, equipment, educational opportunities, programs and services to impart exemplary patient care. Currently, the nurses in The Birth Center provide Childbirth, Breastfeeding and Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) classes. The OB associates also host a New Moms Brunch on a quarterly basis at the hospital. New mothers bring their babies and enjoy a morning of sharing stories, care solutions, and a “chance to eat with both hands” while the nurses cuddle the newborns. Potential new plans include a “Sibling Silly” program for young children whose parents are expecting a new arrival. Children will have the opportunity to tour the Birth Center and experience in advance where they will first meet their new sibling, where Mommy will be staying and what it will be like to be a big brother or sister. Also, an Early Pregnancy class will be offered so mothers can educate themselves on what to expect in the first stages of pregnancy and how to care for themselves. Topics include nutrition, exercise, emotional and physical care. Emily Shemroske, RN, Project Coordinator for The Birth Center’s “A Star is Born” program, said, “We want to go above and beyond with the services and education we offer to new mothers and their families.” She explained that a new commemorative program called “A Star is Born” will be an opportunity for families and friends to celebrate the birth of a child with a lasting tribute. A special star engraved with the baby’s name and birth date will be hung on a donor wall in The Birth Center where you can bring your child to see his or her star shining above the backdrop of mountains. A charitable donation of $250 - $500 will help future babies and families by providing ongoing funds for The Birth Center equipment and programs. A Star is BornIN THE MOUNTAIN SKIES

One of our new programs in 2013 is The Birth Center Fund, established to support the mothers, babies and families of Summit County and surrounding communities. Nearly 400 babies are born at our hospital each year. The Birth Center Fund will provide vital technology, equipment, educational opportunities, programs and services to impart exemplary patient care.

In November 2012, the Summit Medical Center Health Foundation Board awarded up to $102,000 to purchase a Mac-Lab IT hemodynamic recording system. Currently, the computations for right heart catheterization procedures are performed manually and prolong the procedure and can make it difficult to capture all the data. The new equipment will improve accuracy and efficiency and will be compatible with the hospital’s electronic medical record system.

Dr. Warren Johnson is seeing an unusual amount of pulmonary hypertension cases in his cardiology practice at the hospital with referrals from Telluride, Buena Vista, Denver and the surrounding mountain counties. He has developed an association with the Altitude Research Center at the University of Colorado and will be starting high altitude research at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in the near future.

Right heart catheterizations are performed in thehospital operating room and are vital to the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of patients with pulmonary hypertension.

Other cardiac procedures performed at the hospital include:

Y Electrocardiography (EKG) Y Holter Monitoring - Event Monitors Y Echocardiography Y Stress Echocardiogram Y Graded Exercise Testing (Stress Test) Y Nuclear Cardiac Stress Tests Y Ultrasound (for abdominal aneurysm and carotid artery disease) Y CT Scan

Colorado Grand® Awards $20,000 Grant to Flight For LifeThe Summit Medical Center Health Foundation recently received a check for $20,000 from The Colorado Grand® to support Flight for Life Colorado - Summit County. Representatives of the Summit County charities who also received grants posed on the helicopter pad at the hospital for the check presentation by Eddie O’Brien, long-time Summit County Realtor and one of the founders of the event.

The Colorado Grand® is an annual charity tour open to owners of 1960 and earlier sports and race cars of distinction. Every September, at the peak of the fall color season, approximately 85 vintage cars are driven in this relaxed, non-competitive event covering 1,000 miles in five days through Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. The tour attracts entrants from around the world. Visit coloradogrand.org for the full story and photos from the event.

The 2012 Colorado Grand® generated approximately $339,000 for Colorado charities predominately on the Western Slope. Summit County recipients included CASA of the Continental Divide, Family & Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC), Keystone Science School, League for Animals and People of the Summit (L.A.P.S.) and Flight For Life Colorado – Summit County. Other recipients included Colorado Mountain College, Edwards Campus GED Program; a Vail scholarship and six scholarships given in the small towns The Colorado Grand® visited in 2012. Since the first event 25 years ago, more than $3 million has been donated to Colorado charities.

L-R: Kathy Reed, CASA; Brianne Snow, FIRC; Susan O’Brien, LAPS; Eddie O’Brien, Colorado Grand® Community Liaison; Jeff Campeau, Summit Medical Center Health Foundation Board President; John Peterson, Flight For Life Colorado pilot; Judson Miller and Matt Bowe, Flight For Life Colorado Medical Staff; Jodee Trainor, St. Anthony Summit Medical Center Vice President Patient Care/Chief Nursing Officer; Deb Edwards, Summit Medical Center Health Foundation President and Chief Development Officer.

Summit SANE Program ExpandsThe Summit Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program is pleased to announce that several new grants have been received to support exams, forensic nurses’ training, education and community outreach. Jennifer McConnell, SANE Program Coordinator submitted and received a grant from the 9th Judicial District to expand the program in that area since the SANE Program at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center is now the nearest SANE facility due to the recent loss of the SANE program at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. The grant from the 9th Judicial District will help fund outreach to law enforcement agencies and hospitals in Pitkin and Garfield Counties. Grants were also recently received from Breckenridge Grand Vacations and The Summit Foundation as well as continued grant support from the 5th Judicial District. McConnell said that these grants for 2013 will help provide increased training for the SANE nurses in Forensic exams and continued support of the Coordinator position. Funding will also provide additional education so more nurses on the SANE team will be able to perform exams for child abuse, child sexual assault, intimate partner abuse and strangulation cases, in addition to the adult/adolescent sexual assault cases. In 2012 there were 46 exams of adult/adolescent sexual assault, three pediatric sexual assaults and six domestic partner assaults. Grant funding will also allow the hiring of three more SANE nurses to continue the 24/7/365 coverage in the Summit Medical Center Emergency Department.
