“Justice Never Sleeps” Noted Contemporary Impressionist Painter Rick Reinert created a wonderful work of art entitled “Justice Never Sleeps” which depicts the South Carolina Supreme Court at night — with the moon in the background and a light glimmering inside. Mr. Reinert’s works are inspired by nature and sunlight.

“Every day offers unique and exciting opportunities for the artist who follows the light,” says Reinert. He is the appointed Artist-in-Residence at the Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond Woodlands Inn located in Summerville, SC. Owned by Attorney John Linton, the property is renowned worldwide for delivering superior service and cuisine to vacationers and group attendees alike.

Mr. Reinert normally does not do giclées of his work, but has generously offered to do so with “Justice Never Sleeps.”

The SC Bar Foundation just closed the books on Gala 2011, held Thursday, March 3 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. This year’s gala, the fifth such event, met expectations, generating more than $26,000 in proceeds. Close to 300 guests enjoyed a seated dinner, dancing and a silent auction with a wide array of items from getaways to a beautiful print, “Justice Never Sleeps,“ by Artist-in-Residence at The Woodlands Inn, Rick Reinert. (For an exciting opportunity to have one of these prints, please see article “Justice Never Sleeps.”) The auction alone generated net profit exceeding $5,000.

The evening was one of celebration with special focus given to the SC Bar’s Nifty Fifty. This year’s honorees, the class of 1960, had 11 members present at the gala. Justice Kaye G. Hearn presented the pins to this year’s honorees.

The evening also honored the Ellen Hines Smith Legal Services Lawyer of the Year and the SC Bar’s Pro Bono Lawyers of the Year. Susan Firimonte was named the Ellen Hines Smith Legal Services Lawyer of the Year. Firimonte currently serves as the Managing Attorney of the Pee Dee office of South Carolina Legal Services. The award, established in 1989, is named in memory of Ellen Hines Smith of Spartanburg. Smith was the founding director of Piedmont Legal Services. Her entire legal career was devoted to the creation and provision of legal services.

Christopher Genovese and Alex Paterra were named as the SC Bar Pro Bono Lawyers of the Year. Genovese is with the Columbia office of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, LLP in Columbia. Paterra is with his own firm in Greenville. The South Carolina Bar Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year award is presented annually to lawyers who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to volunteer legal services for the poor and disadvantaged.

Foundation President Toyya Brawley Gray closed the evening with a celebration of the Bar Foundation. She noted the extremely low IOLTA revenues as of late, but applauded the efforts of Foundation grantees in the decline. She made special recognition of Foundation donors Walt McLeod III, Eddie Weinberg and John P. “Jack” Wilson as the newest honorees in the Foundation’s Justice Legacy which honors donors who have given cumulative gifts of $5,000 to permanent Foundation funds.

Gala Wrap Up

While the Foundation’s gala was a success, the need for support continues and is more critical as the economy continues to heal. The 2011 grant allocations totaled $2.4 million and the 2012 allocations will be less. Albeit low, these funding levels are only possible by pulling dollars from a reserve fund as well as from support provided by Foundation donors. if you were unable to attend the gala, but would like to contribute, please visit scbarfoundation.org. if everyone does a little, the profession can do a lot. please take a minute to join your colleagues.

Ethel Weinberg (a.k.a. Eddie) is the latest attorney to join the Foundation’s planned giving efforts with a significant gift to the Foundation. If the name seems familiar… it should. Eddie was related to Rusty Weinberg whose original estate gift to the Foundation paved the way for the creation of a strategic planned giving program.

When Eddie was considering making the gift she, of course, was drawn through the family connection. As the Managing Attorney of the Columbia office of South Carolina Legal Services, however, she sees on a daily basis the direct impact that the Foundation has on the provision of legal services to the poor. In interviewing Eddie about the gift, she said, “I’m torn about flashing my name with the Weinberg Society… but Rusty and I were related and the stories around him and his father, Mortimer, had some impact on my even considering law as a career. For the most part, I feel that the Bar Foundation has been such a supporter of legal services over the years and that has benefited me directly; thus, it is only right that I give back.”

The Foundation is extremely grateful to Eddie for continuing to add to the Foundation’s ability to plan for the future. The Weinberg Society honors those who have made estate gifts of $10,000 or any lawyer who indicates that he or she has named the Foundation as a beneficiary in his or her will, regardless of the amount.
