How did July get here so fast! It seemslike yesterday that we were celebratingSpring, Passover and Easter. Now we arehalf-way through 2017 and in the thick

of the Summer. And it is hot! We can debate globalwarming all you want, but there is no denying it’s gettinghotter and we’re getting more rain. It seems like we allneed to grow webbed feet to navigate all the rain wehave been having lately. On the upside though, the grasslooks great and the “forest” in Pacifica Senior LivingForest Trace looks as green and great as it ever has! For years, I have used this platform to revel in mylove for what I considered the best holiday of the year, the Fourth of July. So why should this year be different? It’s not going to be! It’s our national Independence Day,the best fireworks of the year day and Barb’s and mywedding anniversary day. It’s also my “sorry, you willnot see me at work today day!” For this day off, I amdeeply grateful, so here is a special ‘thank you’ to everyone of our associates who is working on the Fourth tomake your day just as great as mine. Here’s a thought for you about Independence Day.Why is being “independent” such a great thing? Inreality, are we (or you) truly ever independent? Whocan really say or act as if they truly stand aloneindependently? It is just about impossible to do so. Ifwe are honest with ourselves, who really wants to bealone and truly independent? I, for one, love beingsupported by, and supportive of, others. Our relationshipsdefine us. It is our relationships with others whom wedepend upon that feed and nurture our souls. Withoutour co-dependence our world would be a very lonelyplace. I am thinking it is a great thing to need people. Iam thinking it is even a greater thing to be needed bypeople. If you need someone or they need you, bydefinition I don’t think you are independent anymore. When did co-dependence become viewed as a weakness?Seems to me, it can be the most empowering tool atestablishing balance in our lives. Balance in relationshipsis what I believe we should strive for. As we go throughlife, we should probably give more than we get andleave more than we take. This action would be liberatingand insure that independently, we all add balance inour lives and our world. Now that would be a greatIndependence Day! It might be very nice if, this year, everyone in our nation followed suit. How about if weall gave a little bit more and took a little bit less, howgreat would our national spirit be? P.S. We would still need to have fireworks, lots andlots of fireworks. And barbecue; got to have barbecue, too. After all, it is the Fourth of July! Happy Birthday,America!

CAMPBELLEPES III

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Loving the Fourth!NEWS AND MUSES

Let’s anticipate July paraphrasing a quotefrom the poet, T.S. Eliot, “This is the waythe world ends, this is the way the worldends, this is the way the world ends notwith a bang but with a tweet?” The bangin this case refers to the traditional fireworkson the Fourth of July celebrating the birthof our nation. This is followed by a monthof sun and fun.

July is vacation time! A trip to themountains or the seashore…remember? And

this is the theme of this month’s column, the joy of“remembering.” We have, as my daughter would say, “inour tool box,” so many precious memories to treasure. We can recreate in our mind a world of former experiencesand enjoy them once more. So let’s forget any currentwoes and remember last July’s happy times and places. Speaking of happy, Charles Klein contributes a pieceentitled A Bridge Players Lament. Whether you play ornot, I think you’ll enjoy it, as I did.

BRIDGE PLAYERS LAMENTAdios to Bridge! — Tonight's the night! Amen to Stayman, I give up the fight, After tonight, I'll be free of troubles No bids, no passes, no negative doubles! What’s played? What’s out? I’ve forgotten

Who cares ‘bout that? My cards are so rotten! Can’t stand the hassle. Can’t stand the pain. Those spot cards keep coming, again and again!

I’m losing all hope — my partner’s a dope She makes me feel like taking the rope! So now it’s all over, I’m off to the backwood I'm bidding goodbye to Gerber and Blackwood!

I'm giving up Bridge; Tonight’s the night, Farewell to conventions, I give up the fight Take these last words, they’re only too true: Bridge ain’t for me ... only for you!

But...But Wait!...Maybe I should understand There will forever be — Another hand! So, what the hell! Be kind to your partner, Don't mind her cheek, It's only a game... And Oh ! ...See you next week!

—Love, Suzy

AMAZING LECTURES TO STIMULATE THE MIND!Awareness Versus Mindfulness

Tuesday, July 4th • 11:00 a.m.Join Anne Goldberg of Savvy Seniors for

another interesting session, “Awareness versusMindfulness.” Does this sound familiar? You haveyour keys in your hand, then get distracted and putthem down, then you have no idea where you putyour keys. How much time do you spend looking

for things you misplaced? Oh, the frustration; oh, the fear. So many seniors worry they are losing cognitive awarenessbecause they are always misplacing, or worse, losing things. Inmost cases though, it is safe to say that you are not losing yourmind. What you have lost though is being in the present moment.Be a Savvy Senior and let Anne Goldberg guide you through thesteps of Awareness versus Mindfulness for a little peace of mind!

Theodore Roosevelt and “theAmerican Century,” Plus China

Wednesdays, July 5th and 19th • 10:45 a.m. Professor Phil Leto bring two interesting topics, beginningwith “Theodore Roosevelt and the American Century” on July5th. When he became President in 1901, 42-year-old TheodoreRoosevelt—adventurer, soldier, reformer and conservationist—represented a young, vibrant and fast growing America. He initiatedmuch needed reforms in a rapidly changing America, built amodern Navy and commenced construction of the Panama Canal. His “walk softly but carry a big stick” foreign policy, would propelAmerica to become the world’s dominant power in the 20th century—“the American Century.” On the 19th, Phil takes a look at “China.” Over the last 25years China has surpassed the United States and Japan to becomethe top producer and exporter of manufactured goods in the world. In that time China has also become one of the world’s largestowners of foreign debt. Should the world be concerned withChina’s large army and increasing military sophistication, it's activeterritorial expansion in the Pacific, and the use of hacking andindustrial espionage for national and geopolitical gain?
