SANTANA THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 25 8PM

Not only will country music fans be able to hear Travis Tritt live and in concert at Isleta Resort and Casino on Saturday, September 6, they’ll also be able to support an all-around charitable gentleman.

A little over a month after leading off the Country Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 6, Tritt accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from his fellow country artist and friend Brantley Gilbert. Then Tritt promptly nominated Jason Aldean and Kid Rock to step up to the challenge, via his Twitter feed.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has gone viral on social media, driving public awareness and charita-ble donations for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in excess of $16 million, and counting. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, after the famous Yankee baseball player, ALS strikes nearly 5,600 people ev-ery year. Of those people, only 80 percent will live beyond five years.

Tritt, who has been a fixture on the country music charts for years, has thrilled fans with seven plati-num albums and numerous hits, among them five No. 1 singles: “Help Me Hold Um,” “Anymore,” “Can I Trust You with My Heart,” “Foolish Pride,” and “Best Intentions.” Public appearances include two Super Bowls and a World Series game, and he’s been a highly venerable member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1992.

Last fall, Travis released his new CD, The Calm Af-ter, and is hoping his daughter enjoys her entry into the music industry.

Now, fans can hear this master of country, blues, ballad, and soul—and all around supporter of good causes—at Isleta Resort & Casino on Saturday, Sep-tember 6. For more information please visit www.isleta.com

If we are to believe what Hollywood shows us, every saloon in the Old West featured at least three things: a piano player, an upstairs hotel-brothel, and a table or two in the corner at which usually sat four or five of the ugliest hunks of humanity west of the Pecos.

Sadly, reality is not nearly as romantic, as what we’re used to seeing on the Silver Screen.

The truth is that few saloons had a piano and very few had a brothel, outside of a cou-ple tiny, crib-sized rooms out back where a stressed-out cowboy could calm his libido.

The one item that was most assuredly on target, however, was the plentiful supply of scary men. It was like the nice people back in Boston and Philadelphia rounded up all the gents whose faces resembled clumps of broc-coli and shipped ’em out to where the skies are not cloudy all day.

And the one thing they seemed to love to do? Gamble. At which game? Poker, for sure. Among the best practitioners were John Hen-ry “Doc” Holliday, James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok, and Wyatt Earp (although just how “scary” their visages, we’ll leave that up to you to decide). Each were remarkably adept players, as well as being remarkably adept at reading other players.

Among the three, Doc Holliday—dentist, expert marksman, and consumptive who eventually died of tuberculosis—was prob-ably the best player, thanks to his legendary ability to bluff. Or was it truly bluffing? Doc never showed his hand after the last opponent folded . . .

Wyatt Earp actually preferred running a poker room and saloon to gambling. He’d settle in for a game but then get bored after

about an hour. And we all know just how skilled Wild Bill

Hickok was: he died as a result of his card-playing ability, his assailant, Jack McCall, shooting him in the back of the head because McCall believed the Deadwood, South Da-kota, denizen was a card cheat.

Two of the worst gamblers in the Old West were Billy the Kid and the fellow who mur-dered him, Pat Garrett.

Garrett played scared, so the story goes. Every pro gambler on the planet will tell you never play with scared money, that is, money that is needed for food, shelter, and debts. All his life, though, Garrett chased money and it most always eluded him. From selling downtown plots of city land that eventually became Carlsbad, New Mexico, to writing a book about his exploits—more fiction than fact—Garrett had a black cloud following him.

Even his death was a shameful scene. He was shot in the back while taking a leak alongside his buckboard during a trip to Las Cruces, New Mexico, to settle a dispute over land he owned and leased for cattle ranch-ing—only to discover the tenant was raising goats, a huge no-no back in the day.

As for Billy, he’d rather play “hearts” with the sweethearts of the saloon. It was fun, plus Billy would run errands for the girls and help secure them clients.

And Billy would receive love along with bling.

Just another day in the winning of the Wild West.

BILLY’S BOTTOM LINE

No, the Hollywood actor hasn’t gone off the deep end. He just seems to have an af-finity for all things that happen in Vegas. But instead of mak-ing yet another it-eration of The Hang-over, he’s teaming up with that movie’s original director, and both are plying their skills in the service of something a little deeper.

The American Hustle star is work-ing with filmmaker/actor Todd Phillips to develop a movie based on Adam Higginbo-tham’s article “A Thousand Pounds of Dynamite,” which centered on law enforcement’s attempts to disarm a bomb found underneath the Harvey’s Resort Casino in Lake Tahoe in 1980.

California landscaper John Birges was found guilty of building and planting the bomb as part of a $3,000,000 extortion plot. Ironi-cally, Birges was a multi-millionaire and the plot was pure revenge: he claimed the casino bilked him out of $750,000. Birges served the rest of his life in jail for the crime.

It is not yet clear what character Bradley Cooper will play in the movie, but with Cooper starring, the movie is not likely to bomb!

Reggae star J Boog comes to Sky City Casino Hotel on September 6, bring-ing his unique combination of island music, Jamaican reggae, and touches of rock and R&B. He released his first solo album, Hear Me Roar, in 2007, which peaked on Billboard’s Top Reggae Al-bums at No. 8. In 2011, he released his first EP, J Boog, which peaked at No. 3 on the Top Reggae Albums chart. His next album, Backyard Boogie, reached No.1 on the reggae charts for 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Born Jerry Afemata (his siblings gave him the nickname Boog) in Compton, California, he was raised in a strict but loving family of Sa-moan heritage, who wanted to make sure Boog and his siblings made productive choices in life. “I pretty much grew up in a traditional fam-ily that gave us a strong bond with our culture—we’re very family ori-ented,” he has said.

J Boog tours frequently, and has shared stages with artists such as Da-mian Marley, Ziggy Marley, SOJA, The Green, Rebelution, and his regular touring mates, The Hot Rain Band.

Joining J Boog at Sky City Casino is Wayne Wonder, a Jamaican reg-gae fusion artist, who had two hits in the Top 20 in 2003 with “No Letting Go” and “Moving Along.” His album Foreva was the No. 6 reggae album in the U.S. in 2007.

Because blackjack is one of the only casino table games in which skill can play an important role, casinos have done everything possible throughout the years to neutralize player advantage.

If you play the game with any degree of regularity, and are serious about keeping the house advantage to a minimum, it is important to scrutinize the rules at individual properties to know exactly what you’re up against.

Here are the primary categories for smart blackjack shoppers:

TABLE MINIMUM: You have to play at a table you can afford. Keep in mind that even at a $5 or $10 game you can always wager more, up to the table max. A lower minimum will give your bankroll more mileage and help you weather cold streaks.

NUMBER OF DECKS: Ever since basic strategy was popularized, casinos have abandoned single-deck hand-dealt games in favor of multiple-deck games dealt out of shoes. The more decks in play, the harder the house advantage works against players. The most popular variations are six-deck and eight-deck games. Fewer decks are better for you, so make it a point to seek them out.

CUT DEPTH: This is a critical category, especially for players who keep track of the cards that are dealt. The more decks the casino puts in play after the shuffle, the better it is for skilled players.

SOFT 17: Blackjack games where the dealer must stand on a soft 17 are preferred over games where the dealer hits that hand. When the dealer

SOME BLACKJACK SHOPPING TIPS

is given the opportunity to make a better hand out of a marginally weak one, it increases the house advantage at the expense of players.

OPPORTUNITY: It’s tough to grind out profit-winning even money on minimum bets. That’s why when the situation warrants (a weak dealer up-card), you should take advantage of the chance to bet more when the dealer is in a position of weakness and in jeopardy to bust. Opportunities for players to accomplish this goal include being able to double down on any two cards, being permitted to split any pair, and being allowed to double down after splitting.

THE SHUFFLE: Automatic, and the more insidious continuous, shufflers are popping up with increasing frequency at casinos around the country. They are designed to speed up the game and subject your bankroll to the ravages of the unrelenting house advantage. The best games are where the dealers shuffle up manually. It not only gives the players a little break to collect their thoughts and regroup, it also provides some down time. Automatic shufflers are the lesser of the two evils. Continuous shufflers should be avoided at all costs.

One of the most iconic bands in the history of American music, the Temptations are bring-ing their distinctive music and choreography to Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino. Not only is the concert part of their nationwide celebration of the 49th anniversary of their No. 1 hit “My Girl,” it is also a benefit for St. Vincent’s Hospi-tal Foundation in Santa Fe.

In 1966, the Temptations had four No. 1 hits on the R&B charts, including “Get Ready.” Since then they have become a musical institu-

tion, known for their precise choreography and vocal harmonies. The band has had a continu-ous lineup of five highly talented male singers working together, with a focus on creating a vocal ensemble rather than spotlighting a lead singer. Twelve talented singers have contribut-ed to that lineup over the years, and founding and original member Otis Williams has contin-ued to keep the Temptations sound alive and at the top of the charts. With songs like “Mas-terpiece,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Just My

THE TEMPTATIONSSaturday, September 20 at 9pm

Imagination,” and “Runaway Child,” the group has amassed a catalog of over 30 Top Ten and No.1 songs in the last 49 years.

The Temptations were pioneers from day one, fo-cusing on songs that reflected social change, politics, relationships, and audience connectivity. Precise choreography, rich harmonies, distinctive voices, and musical versatility made them a band without equal. Breaking down barriers of race, gender, and age, the Temptations were one of the first true cross-over acts in American pop music. To this day, their global audience has no boundaries.

True to their form, and to their mantra, “We Sing for all People,” when the Temptations play at Buf-falo Thunder Resort & Casino on September 20, they will not only wow audiences but also benefit a worthy regional cause.

Casino Entertainer September 2014 24

There are four players at this table. You are the player sitting next to a king-7 in third base. You hit your hand of eight points three times, yet still have an unappeal-ing 14 points—not enough to win unless the dealer busted.

You don’t need to be an expert to know what to do here. Visually, some things should stand out imme-diately. While you don’t know what the first baseman’s cards are, you do know that those cards are most likely two high cards (which I define as 8s through 10s), although they have a minority likelihood of being instead an ace and a 7, for instance. Since you’ve not yet learned my method for identifying facedown cards (in-troduced in Cutting Edge Black-jack), we’ll just assume they’re two high cards.

The player to your right most like-ly has two low cards under his chips (he stood after getting 10 points in hit cards), although he could have a

high and low card, as in an 8 and a 2, in a minority situation. But it doesn’t change this picture.

First, notice that there has been a long string of low cards coming into and during your turn. The 4 and 6 the player took before you came right before your hit cards. This sounds obvious, but all too many players don’t notice this kind of thing.

So what does that mean? Low card streaks—or streaks of

either type card—don’t last forever. Far from it. In other words, there is a high likelihood now of an opposite type card being dealt.

Seven-card hands in single-deck blackjack are almost impossible to get. So, you now hold five cards and

are up against your limit: take one more, that’s it. If you don’t get what you want with the sixth card, you’re almost certain to bust.

But what are your “outs” here? What card do you need, and will you get it? With a 14, you wouldn’t bust with an ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 but only a 5 through 7 would give you any hope of beating the dealer who, in this case (due to the preponder-ance of low cards) likely has a high

card in the hole (hence, by the way, the third basemen, with the 17, is a likely loser).

Because of the huge imbalance of low cards on the table, you’re most likely to get a bust card. Even under the best of situations (not the one here) my research shows you have a 79 percent probability of busting when hitting a five-card hand. Disas-trous! With the imbalance represent-ed here, that likelihood is far higher.

You’re in a no-win, rock vs. hard place situation here. I would con-sider standing here, since busting and losing by taking another card is all but a certainty—given the reality that low card streaks don’t last for-ever.

Blackjack the Smart Way

Oysters are no doubt one of the most popu-lar appetizers at restaurants across the coun-try, including our casinos. But these mollusks are more than just delicious. Oysters have spe-cial filtering properties that have long been used by biologists to help clean up polluted waterways.

The seven-mile-long Mystic River that runs through Boston, Massachusetts, could certain-ly use the help. The repository for a host of industrial waste, it is one of our most nation’s most polluted bodies of water.

And Steve Wynn wants to help clean it up.If his company receives a license to build

its proposed $1.6 billion Everett casino on the shores of Mystic River, Wynn Resorts plans to collaborate with the nonprofit Massachusetts Oyster Project to use more than 250,000 live oysters to help in the river’s clean up efforts.

Oysters, which can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day per mollusk, have been used in clean up efforts in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, and New York City Harbor. But don’t worry; these oysters won’t be available to eat. By the time their work is done, they are filled with too many bacteria and pathogens to survive.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)The full moon in your sign heralds a clear division between your emotional and intellectual nature. Stay neutral and avoid getting psychically pulled into other peoples’ drama. You will be interested in new investments and make financial progress now.
