INNOVATE TO EDUCATE ED CAMP. GR K–12 IML TEAM FLEETWOOD PARK SECONDARY, 7940-156 Street, Surrey Are you asking yourself “What is EdCamp?” Well, EdCamp is a form of un-conference designed specifically for teachers and their needs. What makes EdCamp an un-conference? Unlike tradional conferences which have schedules set months in advance by the people running the conference, EdCamp has an agenda that’s created by the parcipants at the start of the event. Instead of one person standing in front of the room talking for an hour, people are encouraged to have discussions and hands-on sessions. Our EdCamp will have two strands, one will be based on the tradional EdCamp model described above and the other will be full day workshops. When you arrive at EdCamp you will be asked to ‘vote’ for which topics you’d like to discuss. While the Helping Teachers schedule these sessions, we have arranged for the following 75 min. presentaons: Anna Crosland, Georges Vanier Elementary(@a_crossland) - Developing the Elementary Learning Commons : iPads and ideas Sarah Garr, Sullivan Heights Secondary(@garr_s) - Culture of Collaboraon and Connecvity: Course Creaon on iTunes U Karen Lirenman, Woodward Hill Elementary(@KLirenman) - iPad - You’re Never Too Young Sharissa Murphy, Fraser Heights Secondary - Prinng in 3D Isn’t Science Ficon Anymore! DAY2014

USING IPADS TO ENHANCE MATHEMATICS TEACHING AND LEARNING. GR K-7 Marc Garneau and Chris Hunter, Numeracy Helping Teachers. MARTHA CURRIE, 5811-184 Street, Surrey#5 Whether students are exploring mathematics using a math app, or using the iPad to communicate their thinking, or both, there are important pedagogical implications to consider to ensure effective learning. Come find out about some apps that support effective learning and communicating, and more importantly, why these are effective. Please bring an iPad.

DAILY MATH ROUTINES – MEANINGFUL MATH ROUTINES. GR K-2 Sandra Ball, Inner-City Early Learning/Numeracy Helping TeacherHAROLD BISHOP ELEM, 15670-104 Avenue, Surrey #6Daily Math Routines is a resource intended to present alternatives to a traditional calendar time – ways to keep our students actively engaged in the learning of mathematics in meaningful, hands-on and developmentally appropriate ways.In the resource, you’ll find a set of thoughtful tasks that promote visual spatial capacity, number sense, operational sense, data and measurement concepts. Each is presented in the form of both entry tasks and rich routines, intended to keep your youngest students thinking and reasoning mathematically. Come and explore this resource which will provide you with practical, fun and engaging ideas for use your primary classroom – ways to ensure all students are doing math every day.

BEARS & BOOKS : PROJECT BASED LEARNING AND CELEBRATING CURIOSITY Lillah Martin, Helping Teacher and special guest Carlie PainterMARTHA CURRIE ELEM, 5811-184 Street, Surrey#7 This session will be divided into two parts. Both will be filled with ideas you can use the next day. As we know being curious leads to greater learning and going deeper is far more meaningful. 1. Project based learning environments will be explored. Carlie Painter, a kindergarten teacher in our district, who experienced huge success and saw excited, engaged learners will

share her first time experience. There will be opportunity for discussion and planning. 2. Books are the magic to celebrating curiosity and reaching out to each unique learner in your class. Ideas for using amazing books to explicitly teach a variety of concepts, to invite writing opportunities and extend wondering while connecting the learning will be shared. Books will be available to browse and there will be lots of time for talk and sharing. The focus of both parts will be to gain deeper understanding of big idea curriculum and raising awareness of the explicit teaching moments. Woven in will be using assessment to guide the “where to next” and discussions will cover “how to share the learning.”

#8RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL LEGACY – TEACHING AS AN ACT OF RECONCILIATION. GR 4 - 12 Jo-Anne Chorna and Carolyn Sousa, Aboriginal Helping Teacher.FRANK HURT SECONDARY, 3940-77 Avenue, SurreyHow do we work with all our learners to learn about the history and legacy of Indian Residential Schools in Canada? This day-long session introduces new grades 5 and grade 10 BC-specific teacher, classroom, and district resources available for the teaching about Residential school system and its legacy in Canada (in age-appropriate ways), and provides participants with the opportunity to explore the new resources. The grade 5 resources align with the new draft Ministry of Education grade 5 Social Studies and English Language Arts curriculum, and the grade 10 resources align with the current grade 10 Social Studies PLO’s. While the main resources are directed to grades 5 and 10, participants who teach other grade levels are also welcome and encouraged to attend. Teacher participants will receive copies of both the teacher and classroom resources.

#4SNAKES & DRAGONS: WHEN IS A READ ALOUD NOT JUST A READ ALOUD! GR 1-4 Karen Coumont, Numeracy Helping Teacher. MARTHA CURRIE ELEM, 5811-184 Street, SurreyClassroom teachers and myself will share our journey through two read alouds (My Father’s Dragon and We Can’t All Be Rattlesnakes) that provided many opportunities to integrate language arts with a variety of content areas. The learning included the cognitive processes that good readers use to make meaning by accessing background knowledge, visualizing, predicting, asking questions and making inferences. We also had the students learning new vocabulary, creating maps, researching objects important to the story, dramatizing parts of the book, creating art through visualizations, creating class books and discussing issues of social responsibility. The journey was engaging for both students and teachers and participants will leave this session with the information necessary to begin their own “more than just a read aloud” with their students.

#10EXPLORATIONS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING: SESSIONS WITH SATML AND EDUCATION SERVICES- LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT

EARL MARRIOTT SECONDARY 15751-16 Avenue, Surrey - SEE SEPERATE GRID FOR TIMES/DETAILS

This training has been created by experts who have channeled their extensive experience in responding to violent trauma, into the development of a comprehensive understanding of the effects of violence on systems. The goal has been to create effective methods for assessing threats and identifying appropriate interventions that will assist in the prevention of serious violence. Schools, colleges, and communities are systems. Each reacts in its own unique way to trauma. Traditional crisis response in systems such as these, if it occurs at all, is typically a short-term intervention immediately following the incident. The success of these interventions can be substantially strengthened if the system is responded to, rather than just the individuals or subsystems. Understanding and intervening from a systems perspective is a major factor in the approach taken by the Canadian Centre for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response (CCTATR).
