Major Differences
• Treadmill is monotonous event with very little variation with each step as overground run-ning has significant variations throughout the run cycle.
• Significantly higher stress/strain rates in overground run-ning that have the possibility to lead to stress fractures but can also strengthen tibial bone
• When fatigued on treadmill flight time increases (time when both feet are off the belt) and strides stay the same. On treadmill, stride decreases as runners fatigue.
• Pressure under the arch and
toes were higher on the tread-mill but lower under the heel and great toe
Bottom Line: Treadmill offers runners a way to stay in shape when conditions outside may not be the best. For the casual runner with no significant foot issues, the tread-mill is equivalent to overground running and is a great alternative. The treadmill will allow a great workout in a controlled environ-ment. The treadmill does increase the pressure in certain places in the foot so for runners who suffer with plantar fasciitis, hammertoes, flat feet or metatarsalgia (pain under the balls of the feet) overground running may be a better option.
Runners with bunions, arthritis in the great toe joint, or pain under the heel may favor the treadmill as there is less impact on these areas of the foot with treadmill running. For the competitive athlete, running tech-nique is changed when comparing the two as evidenced by increased flight time on the treadmill. Ideally the treadmill should only be used when the competitive surface is unavailable for the athlete.

Distance running is a popular activity for rec-reational and competitive athletes. When the weather is not the nicest many runners rely on the treadmill for exercise. The question arises is running on a moving belt equivalent or even better than running on the ground and is there an increase risk of injury with one way or the other. There are many studies comparing two methods of training. Here is a quick summary of the findings.
Major Similarities of treadmill and over-ground running:
• Motion of the hip, knee, and ankle are similar so there is no increase risk on either surface for injury at those joints.
• Energy expenditure was relatively the same when comparing the two. This means both workouts will give you the equivalent cardiovascular workout.

stress. Acute, or short-term stress, is the body’s instant response to any situation that seems demand-ing or dangerous. Chronic stress, or long-term stress, is caused by stressful situations or events that last over a long period of time such as a difficult job or a health condi-tion. Most of the time, our bod-ies will recover quickly from acute stress, however stress can cause problems if it happens too often or if we don’t have enough time to recover. Unfortunately, there are side effects to stress that are harder to manage such as weight gain, in-somnia, depression, memory loss
and reduced concentration.
So, how can we better manage our stress? The Mayo Clinic recom-mends the following strategies for stress management: physical activ-ity, relaxation techniques, medi-tation, Yoga, and Tai chi. Also, be sure to get plenty of sleep, eat a balanced diet, and avoid tobacco use and excess caffeine and alcohol intake. Exercise, in any form, is a wonderful stress reliever. Exercise pumps up your endorphins (your body’s feel-good neurotransmit-ters) and gives you a natural “high” for your entire day. Exercise also helps you forget daily irritations
and allows you to focus on your body’s move-ment versus the stress of the day. Regular exercise can also increase self-confidence and decrease symptoms associated with anxi-ety and depression, improve sleep, and improve your mood. Dr. Her-bert Benson identified methods that anyone could use to activate what he called “The Relaxation Re-sponse”. These methods include: abdominal breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, body scan exer-cise, stretching, listening, focusing, meditation, visualization, deep re-
Stress is your body’s reaction to change. It is, however our body’s reaction to change within our physical, mental and emotional well-being that can cause the stress to be either positive or negative. Stress is a normal part of life and many things happen to us daily that put stress on our body and mind. So, it is up to us to make sure we are reacting to the stress in the best way possible and that we are also healthy in mind, body and spirit to be better prepared for the stress that comes along each and every day.
When not handled properly, stress can have negative effects on your body including: in-crease heartbeat, headaches, still neck and/or tight shoulders, back pain, fast breathing, in-creased sweating, and upset stomach. There are two types of stress, acute stress and chronic

According to the American Psy-chological Association, the top two sources of stress are job stress and financial stress. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) declared stress a hazard of the workplace costing American industry more than $300 billion annually. Here are some tips to reduce work related stress: have a “to-do” list, be helpful to your co-workers, develop a genuine friend-ship with your boss, be on time and prepared for meetings and appointments, focus on actionable items, delegate work, reward your-self, listen to your favorite music as you work, be the master of your time, focus on what you love about your job, and unwind after a day of hard work. Here are a few strate-gies developed by Dave Ramsey each year to teach community

laxation, and vigorous exercise. If one of these techniques works for you and you begin to use it on a regular basis, it could be life changing.
Lindsay Davel, APNP, Aurora Behavioral Health says there are five points to remember when learning how to cope with stress:
1) Take Control of Your Stress. Davel says, “Give yourself a time out if that’s what your mind and body need.”
2) Prevent Self-Sabotage. “Don’t overuse caf-feine, get plenty of sleep, don’t use alco-hol and drugs to escape stress and moni-tor stress eating,” says Davel.
3) Increase Activity Level. “Choose activities that fit your body and lifestyle, use exer-cise sessions as “me” time,” adds Daval.
4) Relax with a 5-Second Deep Breath. “Try taking one minute worth of 5-second breaths and repeat it multiple times per day for maximum effect,” explains Daval.
5) Create a Positive Mind Set. “This means try-ing to use realistic thinking and let go of the uncontrollable,” explains Daval. “Take

leafy green vegetables and in fortified flour and rice prod-ucts, has been shown to lower the risk of certain birth defects called neural tube defects. In addition to eating a well bal-anced diet, it’s a good idea to take a multivitamin with folic acid daily for three months before pregnancy and at least three months into pregnancy. If there is a history of neural tube defects, then women should be placed on a higher dose of folic acid.
• If you need to update your vaccines, plan to do so at least one month before you try getting pregnant. Certain
vaccines such as the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) and others can increase the risk of birth defects.
• Avoid drugs and alcohol. You should ask your health care provider about taking any medications (both prescription and over-the-counter drugs) as well as any herbal supple-ments.
• Stop smoking. Smoking can make it harder to get preg-nant, and it poses risks to the fetus.
• Eat well and exercise. Being either significantly over- or underweight can increase risks during pregnancy. Most
women who are trying to conceive are encouraged to pursue moder-ate, but not extremely strenu-ous, exercise. Even women who ovulate regularly may face a higher risk of miscar-riage if they engage in strenu-ous exercise, such as marathon training. Your doctor may also recommend that you avoid eating certain types of fish during pregnancy that could contain high levels of mercury that can cause problems.
• Carefully manage any medical conditions you may have. If you are being treated for a

Almost everyone realizes the importance of prenatal medical care to assure the health of a pregnant woman and her baby. If you decide to see your health care provider even before you become pregnant, he or she can offer advice about exercise, eating and lifestyle habits that can increase your chances of becoming preg-nant and may reduce the risk of miscarriage or birth defects.
Women who are considering getting preg-nant often ask if there is anything they should be doing (or avoid doing) before they become pregnant. Here are some suggestions I routinely share with women who plan to conceive in the near future.
• If you are thinking about becoming preg-nant, you should take 0.4 mg of folic acid every day. Folic acid, which is found in

pre-existing medical condition (asthma, diabetes, hypertension) it’s important to obtain medical advise before getting pregnant. Not only is it imperative to keep these illnesses under control during preg-nancy, but some common medications used to treat these conditions may have an adverse affect on your pregnancy. If this is the case, your health care provider may be able to suggest a suitable substitute.
• Visit your dentist. Research has shown that periodontal gum disease — an infection of the gums caused by plaque — is especially common in pregnant women and is related to problems during pregnancy, such as premature labor and low birth weight.
Even if you are healthy, it’s a good idea to make an appointment to see your health care provider for a complete medical check-up, be-fore you attempt to get pregnant.
For more information or to schedule an ap-pointment with Dr. Southwick or any of our Women’s Health Providers please call the Au-rora Health Center at (920) 907-7000 or www.aurora.org.

only treatment option. The good news is that the majority of women can be successfully treated using non-surgical techniques. What factors contribute to incontinence and pelvic pain?
• Pregnancy and childbirth
• Pelvic injury or surgery
• Weakened sphincter muscles
• Neurological conditions
• Pelvic organ prolapse
• High impact physical activities
• Menopause
• Obesity
• Urinary or vaginal infections
• Smoking/chronic coughing
• Straining with the evacuation of stool
• Chronic constipa-tion
Your physical thera-pist will develop a plan that addresses your specific needs and may use exer-cise, relaxation, fluid/food intake, manual techniques and/or biomechanics/biofeedback as non-invasive treat-
ment options. If it’s determined that surgery is needed for your treatment, a vari-ety of procedures are available by
board-certified gyne-cologists and urolo-gists who will discuss other treatment op-tions with you. To schedule an appoint-ment with Tiffany Fisher, please call the Aurora Health Cen-

Incontinence, the loss of bladder or bowel control, is not a disease but a symptom of other underlying disorders. Women of all ages, whether they have borne children or not, ex-perience incontinence. Incontinence affects a person’s self-esteem, their emotional well-be-ing and their independence. Pelvic pain that makes it difficult to sit, causes pain with inter-course, or pain in the hips, lower abdomen or lower back also affects many women. These problems may be caused by spasms of the muscles that support the bladder, uterus and rectum and are a symptom of muscle joint or nerve problems. Unfortunately, many women suffer in silence because they are too embar-rassed to discuss these issues with their health care provider or are fearful that surgery is the

eyes. The distance and viewing an-gle between your eyes and moni-tor aren’t the same as reading a magazine or book. Pixilated print is typically not as sharp as type in printed materials. And screens can cause further strain due to reduced contrast, flashing, light reflections or glare.
If you wear eyeglasses or con-tact lenses, your prescription was likely calibrated to read a chart 20 feet away, not a computer screen 20 inches in front of you. Adjust-ing to the shorter distance can put strain on your eyes. If you have multifocals, you may tilt your head
forward or backward to see your computer screen clearly.
Avoiding computer vision syn-drome
The cure for CVS is simple: get away from your computer. But if you must spend hours staring at a screen, symptoms will continue to recur and may worsen over time. If CVS has become “a pain in your neck,” here are some things to con-sider:
1. Lighting – Make sure over-head lighting, desk lamps or light from windows is not causing glare on your screen.
Use low wattage light bulbs in desk lamps. (If you can’t stop the glare, get a screen glare filter to decrease the light reflected from your screen.)
2. Your chair and posture – Select a chair with back support that allows you to sit up straight comfortably. Your feet should rest flat on the floor. Chair arms should support your arms while you are typing. Never rest your wrists on the keyboard

Spend a lot of time in front of a computer? You may suffer from CVS – short for Computer Vision Syndrome. The symptoms are probably familiar: headaches, blurred vision, eyestrain, dry eyes, and neck and shoulder pain.
The more you stare at a screen, the more like-ly you’ll have CVS symptoms. Especially if you already have vision problems: farsightedness, aging eyes with cataracts or “presbyopia” (the reason the 40+ crowd reaches for their reading glasses), astigmatism or trouble focusing. Poor lighting, screen glare, poor posture or sitting too close or too far from your monitor can also make symptoms worse.

It’s also important to see your
eye doctor for a comprehensive
eye exam if you’re experiencing
CVS symptoms. Mention how
much time you spend at your com-
puter and what symptoms you’ve
been having. Your optometrist
can test for CVS and advise you
on treatment options. Your doc-
tor may prescribe glasses designed
specifically for computer use, sug-
gest special tints or antireflective
coatings, or talk with you about vi-
sion therapy
Staring at pixels is inevitable in
this day and age – you’re doing it
right now. But it doesn’t have to
lead to CVS when you take the
right steps.
3. Position of your screen – Ideally, you should look downward slightly when viewing your computer. Set the screen about 20 to 28 inches from your eyes. The center of the screen should be about four or five inches below your eye level.
4. Location of source materials – Put materi-als you reference while typing between the keyboard and monitor. Place them the same distance from your eyes as your computer screen. In other words, try not to change your eye’s focus or move your head too much when referring from source documents to the screen. A document holder that is adjacent to your screen is the perfect solution
5. Your eyes – Blink frequently or use over-the-counter eye drops to keep your eyes lubricated. Follow the “20-20-20” rule to rest your eyes: after every 20 minutes at the computer, look at something at least 20 feet away or close your eyes for at least 20 seconds. Give your eyes longer breaks throughout the day by getting

If your symptoms per-sist, even in the winter, then you may have perennial rhinitis. Peren-nial allergens include animal dan-der, dust mites and indoor molds.
Signs and symptoms that indi-cate you may benefit from seeing an allergist are:
• Nasal symptoms: conges-tion, runny nose, itching, sneezing, decreased sense of smell, frequent sinus infec-
tions
• Eye symptoms: redness, itching, tearing, sensation of something in your eyes
• Respiratory symptoms: frequent cough, especially at night or with exercise
• Dry, itchy skin and/or hives
• Stinging insect reactions: Symptoms such as breathing difficulty, loss of conscious-ness, swelling of throat
• Recurrent infections
Dr. Anita Gheller-Rigoni is an al-lergist/immunologist. An allergist/
immunologist is a physician who has completed two to three years of specialized training in addition to three years of training in either internal medi-cine and/or pediatrics. After this training, an allergist/immunologist can become “board certified”, in this specialty and helps to diagnose and treat both children and adults with allergies, asthma and immune deficiencies.

The leaves will be changing, and the wind will blowing….and you will be miserable. Get out your handkerchief, because seasonal allergies are here, and if you suffer from “seasonal aller-gies”, you may notice that your symptoms are present through most of the year. And you’re not alone. Over 50 million people in the United States suffer from allergies, costing $10 billion dollars annually in the United States! Of these, about 35 million have allergic rhinitis and 15 million carry the diagnosis of asthma.
Allergic rhinitis is the most common of the allergic diseases and can be both seasonal and perennial (throughout the year). Symptoms of seasonal allergies result from pollen in the air. In the Midwest, if you start sneezing in mid-March, it’s likely that trees are your foe. Grasses
