WIAA adds fifth division for postseasonThe Reporter Staff

Generate more student-athlete opportunities?Generate interest? Gen-erate money? Generate amore balanced State bas-ketball tournament?

Whatever the intent ofthe Wisconsin Inter-scholastic Athletic Asso-ciation and whatever theoutcome, memberschools will play a five-division state boys andgirls basketball tourna-ment for the first timethis season.

The WIAA tinkerswith conference align-ments every so often inan effort to provideschools with better fitsas far as enrollments andcompetitive balance.

The jostling occurs inan effort to achieve thatbalance mostly in foot-ball, basketball or both.

Now, after about twodecades of playing afour-division state bas-ketball tournament, theWIAA has decided to goto five divisions. TheState tournament ex-panded in 1991 fromClass A, B and C to Divi-sion 1 through 4.

The new model alsomeans a Division 5 fieldof four teams gets addedthis season, and Division1 goes from having eightqualifiers in Madison toonly four.

Here’s what some areacoaches thought of thenew plan:Adam Zakos, FdL boys

“I think they tried tofix the whole public-pri-vate school debate bydoing that, and they’renot really fixing it.

“With ‘Super Tuesday’(sectionals) you’re goingto have to turn around (ifyour team qualifies) andget everything straight-ened out for the Fridaygames, rooms for theteams and all that.

“Teams may lose somefans, especially the teams

that have to travel longerdistances. Also, some ofthe best games in thestate will be played in thesectional final and supersectional, before Friday’sState tournament.

“I’m happy for the Di-vision 5 schools, whoare going to get a chanceto play at the State tour-nament, but for the Divi-sion 1 schools I don’tlike it and don’t know ofany Division 1 coacheswho do.”

Doug Follis, Fondy girls“Personally, I don’t like

that. The reasoning was toget more kids (State tour-nament) opportunities. Buttaking away four Division1’s and putting in four Divi-sion 5 teams … I don’t seethe more opportunities.

“It’s the same numberof kids for the most part, and some of the smallerschools might not have 15players on their rosters,so it may not even be thesame amount of kids get-ting the opportunity.

“The other thing Idon’t like is the teamsthat are Division 2, al-lowing them to come upto Division 1. You’re al-ready limiting Division 1teams (by making itmore difficult to get toState). And there maynot be a lot of (Division 2enrollment) teams thatdo it, but it’s almost adouble jeopardy.”Kyle Krueger, Springs boys

“I know our region isloaded with Oostburgand Cedar Grove Bel-gium. It’s going to be realdifficult. Obviously, if

you go to five divisions itincreases your odds ofmoving on. I’m glad theydidn’t use any type ofmultiplier for privateschools. I didn’t like therationale behind it.”

On the issue that pri-vate schools are dominat-ing certain divisions: “Idon’t think it solves (it)at all — not at all. Ifnothing else, maybe itmakes it worse. Maybe itmakes it easier for thosetop-notch private schools.I don’t think the five-divi-sion plan helps those per-ceived situations.”Jeremiah Hoffmann,Winn. Lutheran boys

“I guess it’s not the endof the world. We’re cer-tainly going to be at thebottom of Division 3 (inenrollment) with thechange. I think whetheryou ask a private schoolcoach or a public schoolcoach is going to deter-mine your answer. I’m inthe opinion if it’s notbroke, don’t fix it, and Idon’t think it was broke. They didn’t come upwith something crazy.

It’s fairly reasonable. We’re a smaller school, and only time will tellhow the regionals andsectionals will shape upon a year-to-year basis.”Gary Kuehl, NFdL girls

“Going from (Division)2 to 3 is more of a realisticspot for us. It’s probablywhere we belong with alot of the 3s. When youare Division 2 with about400 kids in your highschool, playing teamswith 5, 600 kids makes abig difference. We’ll stillbe playing good pro-grams. … Sometimes thesmaller schools are someof the tougher programs.”Kyle Seyfert, Oakfield boys

“I don’t really have anopinion ... whatever theythink is best is fine withme. I like the opportunityto have more teams get toState. I think the five divi-sion (plan) is a little bitbetter.”Tom King, Laconia boys

“I don’t know, I’ve gotmixed feelings about it.Sometimes I think part ofme (says), ‘We don’t needto go in that direction;you don’t water down thetournament.’ The flipside (is that it’s) probablya fairer way to go. ... Itcould have stayed the wayit was, and I would havebeen fine with it.”Tyler Witkowski,Lomira boys

“I don’t quite under-stand the small D1s (is-sues). I don’t know whatthey tried to accomplishor if they actually did.The private schools arestill going to be good, andthey’re still going to win.

“... [Division 1 teams]have the talent (and) theyhave the basketball play-ers. To take away four oftheir teams, if that’s fairor not, I’m not sure. Inthe grand scheme ofthings they play at a pret-ty high, intense level, D1does. D3 plays hard, butthere’s obviously a differ-ence in talent.”

Where there’s ‘Hope’ for FondyVeteran Cardinals team should be better behind BonlanderBY DOUG WHITELEYThe Reporter

The Fond du Lac Cardi-nals girls basketball teamwill feature a returningconference player of theyear and three other re-turning varsity playerswho played a good deal ofball in AAU tournamentsover the summer.

That sure can’t hurt theCardinals chances forsuccess.

Hope Bonlander is theFox Valley Association’sreturning player of theyear, and she and return-ing varsity players Eliza-beth Osborn, CydneyHead and Karson Staceyall played AAU ball, sothere should not be a lackof experience.

“I think we should defi-nitely be better than wewere last year,” Bonlan-der said. “We have somegood underclassmen com-ing up. We’ve been look-ing pretty good in ourscrimmages after school.I’m excited for this year;(I) think we can do prettygood.”

It all starts with Bonlan-der, who recently signedher letter of intent to playDivision II college ball forSouthwest MinnesotaState next season.

“She puts a ton of timein on it,” said Fondy coachDoug Follis. “She’s alwaysin the gym working on the

game. I don’t see her goingdown at all. I see her withjust as good of a chance asanybody (to earn player ofthe year).”

Bonlander scored about14 points a game with 6.3rebounds last year andshot better than 40 per-cent from beyond the 3-point arc. She’s a three-year varsity starter forFondy. With all that she’sgot on her basketball re-sume already, she saidshe’s not all that con-cerned with defendingher title.

“I guess I’m not reallythinking about that,”said Bonlander, whoplayed with the Fox Val-ley Hustle AAU team out

of Appleton. “It’s notsomething that’s so im-portant that I have tohave it. If it happens itwill happen. My goal is toplay smarter and playbetter defense, and to

play at a higher level forwhen I reach college.

“I’m just going to haveto play smarter because Iknow it will be harderthis year for me.”

BY DOUG WHITELEYThe Reporter

Three things willmake this year’s Fonddu Lac boys basketballteam better, accordingto coach Adam Zakos.

The Cardinals mustdefend the ball better tokeep dribblers from in-filtrating the lane.

Being a team on thesmaller side, they must

reboundas a teamon bothoffenseand de-fense.

Andthey haveto shootwithmore

confidence and, ulti-mately, more success.

One returning playerwho should be excep-tional at the first ofthose missions — andsolid at all three — willbe senior point guardTony Smit.

Smit is a returningall-conference second-team player who wasalso on the seven-mem-ber all-defensive team asvoted by Fox Valley As-sociation coaches.

“Tony’s definitely oneof the best point guardsin the state,” said Fondycoach Adam Zakos. “Ithink that he is a contin-

uation of a long line ofpoint guards who camethrough Fond du Lac.He’s one of our leaders, and we’re excited to seewhat our team can do.”

The Wisconsin Men’sBasketball Yearbook alsoranks Smit among thetop 50 seniors in the stateafter he averaged 13points a game last sea-son.

“I feel it’s an honor tobe up there in the top50,” Smit said. “In orderfor me to show that I be-long there I have to goout there and battleevery day.”

Large senior class leads SpringsBY MICHAEL ROGERSThe Reporter

The St. Mary’s Springsgirls basketball team tookits first step forward lastyear under head coachMitch Redig. This season, the Ledgers want to takethe next step into the tophalf of the Flyway.

Last season’s 11-12 teamwas comprised mostly ofjuniors, and this timearound the eight seniorshave Redig expectinggood things.

“Last year was a step inthe right direction. Myfirst year we were 3-18;

last yearwe were11-12,”Redig said.“We lostsome closegames;playedLomiracompeti-tive twice.

Our team, which consist-ed mostly of juniorsgained some valuable ex-perience.”

“This year we have a lotof seniors, and we allwork really well togeth-er,” Jenna Shea said.

Springs doesn’t losemany players from lastyear, but the Ledgers doneed to replace some bignumbers from the team’sbest player.

Amber Lisowe led theteam with 13.6 points, andshe averaged 5.8 reboundsdespite being just 5-foot-6.Trying to find her re-placement is the most im-portant thing for Springsin the early going.

“It will be tough to re-place her, but I think withsome of us seniors we’lltake the place of herpoints,” Megan Shea said.“It will be more of a teameffort to take her points. But I think we can do it.”

Both Sheas — they aretwins — and Redig namedKatie Moses as the playermost likely to take up thescoring slack.

“I think Katie Moses isgoing to have a good scor-ing season,” Megan Sheasaid. “She’s a really goodshooter, she can get hershot off pretty quick, andshe makes most of hershots.”

Moses scored 106 totalpoints in 23 games lastyear. Redig added that

he’d like to see both Sheas— Jenna averaged almost8 a game — bump up theirscoring average as well.

They’ll join Moses inthe starting backcourt, with Jamie Birschbachcoming off the bench, butreplacing Lisowe’s re-bounding may be just astough.

Andrea Beres (5-7) start-ed much of last season.Kayla Chatterton is thetallest player on the teamat 5-11, and KatieSpannbauer and Cather-ine Richardson will all becompeting for the twostarting frontcourt spots.

The post play is a ques-tion mark, but team de-fense is not.

“I think we have verygood ball handlers; wework very well on defensetalking to each other andcommunicating,” JennaShea said. “I think thatwill help us out in the

long run.”Redig is well aware of

his team’s limitations.“Obviously replacing

Amber is a big questionmark. We don’t knowwho’s going to step up.Only one girl is over 5-9 soour post play, interiorplay is a huge questionmark, and obviously whowill do the scoring issomething we need to fig-ure out.”

But the third-yearcoach is still excitedabout the possibilitieswith a veteran club.

“I’m looking at thisteam, with the experienceand the work this sum-mer, (and) we’re lookingfor a top three finish inthe conference,” he said.“WLA, Lomira, KML arethe top tier, we’re hopeful-ly in the mix with thosetop teams. We’re really fo-cusing on improvingevery day.”

Ledgers have smallroster, huge hearts

BY DOUG WHITELEYThe Reporter

The St. Mary’sSprings boys basketballteam is dealing with asmall squad.

The varsity squad hasjust 10 players, andadding the 10 freshmenand nine junior varsityplayers barely wouldqualify for a platoon.

The Ledgers won’thave big numbers or bigfirepower, but what theymay have is a better un-

derstand-ing oftheir rolein striv-ing for acommongoal.

“Wehave abunch ofgood

kids, and they’ll workhard,” said Springscoach Kyle Krueger.“We’re talking aboutbeing a band of broth-ers and not letting any-thing come in betweenour team.”

Krueger did not careto dwell on last season, one in which Springswent 4-18 overall, but hesaid there were somedifficulties that extend-ed beyond shots and re-bounds, including amultitude of injuriesthat certainly didn’thelp in a 3-11 FlywayConference mark.

“I think we definitelyhad more talent thanfour wins,” the coachsaid. “Going back andsaying this won’t hap-pen again, my mainfocus is attitude andwork ethic. From year toyear you can’t alwayscontrol your talent, buthopefully you can bemore positive and havegood team chemistry.”

This year’s team does-

n’t have outlandish ex-pectations as far aswins, but it does have away it wants to go aboutits business.

“I would like for ourteam to come into theyear with a good attitudeand not be sore aboutwhat happened last year,”said senior Austin Good.“It’s a whole new seasonand a good group of guys.We have young guys whocan step up. It might be alittle bit of a rebuildingyear, but with the youngtalent we have we can dosome good things.”

Another senior, DillonWiese, who is expectedby Krueger to score anddefend inside, said thething he wants to do thisseason is provide leader-ship for a team withfour juniors and threesophomores.

“Me personally, I justwant to be a leader onthe court, being one ofthree seniors,” Wiesesaid. “The seniors haveto be good leaders andhelp the younger guyssince we’ve had a year inour system that we run.”

Jacob Balson is thethird senior for Springs. He played just a bit lastseason, but can shootthe ball, Krueger said.

20-20 seasons propel VikingsBY MICHAEL ROGERSThe Reporter

The first two years withScott Herrewig as headcoach of the WinnebagoLutheran Academy girlsbasketball team havebeen mostly successful.

The pair of 20-win sea-sons are the only two inthe program’s history.

There’s only been oneblot on the resume. Lomi-ra and WLA have splitfour regular-seasongames during that time, but the Lions haveknocked WLA out of re-gional competition bothyears. It’s something thatbothers the Vikings play-ers.

“I think we have a lotmore to strive for,” WLAsenior Kylie McArthursaid. “We lost the last twoyears to Lomira. This iskind of our last shot at itto make our point andend with a bang.”

Fortunately, or unfortu-nately, Lomira isn’t inWLA’s regional this year, but the two will see eachother twice in Flywayplay, and those twomatchups could deter-mine the league title.

And WLA is ready forthe challenge. Despitegraduating Steph Kramer,— who played bigger thanher 5-foot-7 frame and wasthe competitive engine ofthe team — three startersreturn, a fourth starterwas the sixth man lastyear, and there is speed toburn.

“It’s going to hurt a lit-tle bit, but we have strongpost players and tallones,” forward KatelynKuehl said. “We have alot of quickness andspeed to make up forsome of that (loss).”

Herrewig isn’t surehow well they’ll replaceKramer, but he expectsgood things from MeganTews, a 6-footer, as well asfellow seniors HannahFreiberg and Courtney

Georg. That starting spotcould still change, but theother four look good en-tering the year.

Kuehl averaged 13points, 7 rebounds and al-most 3 steals per gamelast year.

“I think she’s the sec-ond best all-around play-er (in the Flyway), she’sthat good,” Herrewigsaid. “She can shoot fromthe outside, she’s alonger, quicker athletethan most you find at 5-10. What held Katelynback was perhaps justbeing unsure of howmuch she can do.”

Kuehl said she workedon her jump shot and ballhandling among otherthings during the sum-mer. Kylie McArthur isanother tall, but very fastplayer. She usually pro-vides the team solid de-fense.

“We stress defense a lotmore than offense,” saidMcArthur, adding thatball pressure and weak-side defense is always im-portant. “Defense winsgames in our view.”

The other returningstarter is Lexi Herrewig,a junior point guard.Coach Herrewig saidshe’s the best 3-pointshooter on the team, andhe is looking for morelong-distance shots fromhis daughter.

The player he has themost hopes for is MollySippel, a reserve last year

but a starting guard thisseason.

“Molly’s a very goodcompetitor,” he said.“She’s only 5-3, but shejumps well. She can scoreinside with jump shoot-ing, and she loves to play,so I expect big thingsfrom Molly.”

Chelsea Abler will getminutes off the bench asa wing player, while jun-iors Erin Isaksson andSarah Neumann will beback-ups at the guard po-sitions.

With speed to burn andtalent all over the court, there is reason for Her-rewig to be optimistic. The thing he said he needsis for a large group of sen-iors to take on a leader-ship role and a determina-tion to get over the region-al playoff hurdle.

“Our girls, and I don’tknow if it’s just greatparenting, or just goodChristian girls, but oftentimes you find them asnice girls,” Coach Her-rewig said.

“We need girls that arenot usually vocal to, attimes, be vocal and girlswho love to play developa chemistry amongstthemselves (to) make thata team thing.”

Kuehl said even with somany veterans the teamneeds to keep getting bet-ter throughout the sea-son.

“It’s going to be impor-tant to stay focused everypractice, everyone give ittheir all and improveevery day,” Kuehl said,“and play as a team be-cause basketball is ateam game.”

New group leadsWLA after title run

BY MICHAEL ROGERSThe Reporter

The WinnebagoLutheran Academy boysbasketball team had the2009-10 season it wasdreaming of.

All the veteran leader-ship and talent paid offwith a conference title —its first in 16 years — aregional title — its firstin nine years — and ifnot for the indestructibleforce known as RacineSt. Catherine’s, WLAmay have been playingat the Kohl Center.

Three consecutiveovertime tournament

winsgaveWLAquite amemory. But nowa wholenewgroup isin chargeof mak-

ing sure it doesn’t be-come a distant memory.

“We had a lot of fun.As a team it was veryexciting to make it asfar as we did,” WLAcoach Jeremiah Hoff-mann said.

“We were disappoint-ed we couldn’t get onemore win and get downto Madison. I think itcertainly helps bring anadded energy to all ofour kids. There was agreat attitude and workethic in the offseason.”

There needed to be alot of work because theseven graduated seniorsfrom last year did basi-cally everything for theteam that went 24-3.

You can throw out lastyear’s stat sheet whenpredicting this season.

The most impressivestat from a returningplayer is the one reboundthat Ian Zahn averaged.

The seven returningplayers scored a total of96 points, so finding anew go-to guy will be achallenge.

“I think after a fewgames we’ll find out,”WLA guard Chris Stoll-fus said. “It will take alittle bit, (but) we’ll findout who can score.

“Defense is going towin us games,” headded.

Don’t think that theonly thing the currentVikings got last yearwere splinters.

It was also a time forlearning.

“They taught useverything in practice,”Zahn said. “We playedhard in practices; prac-tices were like games. Itgot us tough and reallymade us work on the lit-tle things each andevery day.”

He added that theylearned how much ef-fort it took to succeed.

“In the overtimegames, they really left iton the floor,” Zahn said.“It was truly spectacu-lar how much they gaveit every game.”

Healthy Orioles eager to fly highBY PAUL KEUPThe Reporter

Things are looking upfor the North Fond duLac High School boysbasketball team in 2010-11.

The Orioles finished 5-18last season, when leadingscorer Dylan Wodsedalekmissed most of the cam-paign with a shoulder in-jury, but they are hopingfor a healthy and moresuccessful season.

“We’ve got some fairlyhigh expectations,” saidNorth Fond du Lac coachPat Lloyd, who enters hissecond full season.

“We have a lot of sen-iors back; we have nineseniors coming back. Most of them played a lotof minutes last year. They’ve matured as indi-viduals and as players. We expect to be prettycompetitive this season.”

Wodsedalek (12 ppg, 6rpg, 3 apg) leads the sen-ior class that also boastsfellow guard TravisWhite, point guard Jar-rod Marose, and postplayers Alec Seidl, TaylorNoble and Jon Schalk.

The Orioles look tomake a push up from thefourth-place Flyway fin-ish predicted by the Wis-consin Basketball Year-book.

“Everyone is starting toshow we have a team thatcould possibly win achampionship,” Whitesaid. “There is no ques-tion about how hard theywork, but I don’t thinkthey’ll have any problem.

“I would say (we)should be competitive fora conference champi-onship. … We’ve grownthat bond, and we shouldbe able to take that out onthe court.”

The Orioles aren’t aone-man team, but theirsuccess will depend onstaying healthy — espe-cially Wodsedalek.

He separated his leftshoulder in a game

against Oakfield just be-fore Christmas break lastseason.

“I was posting a guy up,and I had my arm up inthe air,” Wodsedalek said.“He was pushing on myback a little bit, and itjust kind of popped out. Iremember a lot of pain. Ithurt like a son of a gun. Idon’t want to go throughthat again, that’s forsure.”

He still wears a brace —per his mother’s wishes —and although it’s restrict-ing he won’t let it harnessthe team’s goals to finishat, or near, the top of theFlyway standings.

“(Our strengths areour) experience and theway we gel and knoweach other,” Wodsedaleksaid. “We have a lot ofseniors on the team thisyear. We’ve been playingwith each other since(about) fourth grade orwhatever.

“We’re all a pretty tightgroup, and we have anunderstanding of howeach other plays. That’sgoing to be one of ourstrong points.”

White and Wodsedalekplayed on the WisconsinBlizzard AAU team out ofAppleton in the summer, and they found successand improvement.

“(Travis’) game has re-ally picked up,” Lloydsaid. “His shot has gotten

a lot better.”Seidl and Schalk both

stand 6-6, and they will becounted on to anchor thepost and rebound.

“Alec and Jonny haveworked hard on theirfootwork, and we didn’thave a problem with re-bounding,” Lloyd said.“We were fairly solidwith that last year withJon and Alec working in-side.”

Senior Kenny Wallen-der also is expected to bein the mix.

“Kenny is a kid whocould be a wild-card,”Lloyd said. “Over thesummer, there weregames where Kenny getsin the zone, and he wouldknock down three or four3-pointers in a row. He’sshown some signs he can

be a very good scorer forus.”

The Orioles alsobrought up 5-10 freshmanColton Krupp.

“He’s kind of just get-ting familiar,” Lloyd said.“I feel like Colton will bein the rotation, earningmore minutes as the yeargoes on. I see some goodthings happening therein the future, too.”

Lloyd could use a rota-tion that goes as many asnine deep, and that willhelp the Orioles fly upthe court more often.

“I see us being a littlemore up-tempo,” Marosesaid. “We worked thatway this summer. We did-n’t have many set plays, and we tried to push theball more instead of half-court offense.”

North Fond du Lac’s Dylan Wodsedalek missed most of lastseason with a shoulder injury, but he returns for what hehopes is a happy and healthy new season.

Senior trio to leadNorth Fond du LacBY PAUL KEUPThe Reporter

Gary Kuehl’s expecta-tions for his North Fonddu Lac High School girlsbasketball team are a bitup in the air right now.

“We are replacing agood portion of ourteam,” Kuehl said. “Wereturn three seniors,

which wehope torely on toget usthroughthe earlypart ofthe sea-son. Ilook forthe new-comers to

get varsity experience, and it will be interestingto see how we develop.”

Those three seniorstarters are guard Moni-ca Soyk, forward Yolan-da Hayes-Barnes andforward Sam Sales.

“(Yolanda) is a goodinside player and veryathletic,” Kuehl said ofHayes-Barnes, who aver-aged 8.9 points and 3.6rebounds per game lastseason.

“She’s usually the bestathlete on the floor. Shegives us experience inthe inside game, and shehas improved her shotover the last coupleyears. She gives us thatquickness that causes alot of problems.”

Sales joins Hayes-Barnes in the post, andKuehl said she “hasgood size inside. She hasreally improved hergame on the outsideend, and she gives us aninside-outside threat.”

Soyk returns as astarting guard, and sheand her classmates areready to lead theyounger Orioles.

“Obviously, it’s not an

easy thing (to make thetransition to varsity),”Soyk said.

“If you work hard inpractice, it makes it eas-ier to make the transi-tion in a game.

“… I definitely thinkwe can carry a lot of theload to begin with. Oncethey get into it, it takessome of the pressure offus.”

Kuehl said MerryWeber is the top candi-date for the startingpoint guard spot, andthe fifth starting spotcould go to any of thefollowing guards:Gretchen Stutz, HannahNelson, Sierra Giebeland Jenna Goldapske.

Nicole Seidl, a 6-footsophomore, also is ex-pected to be part of therotation, and NakeetaGiebel is another senior.

“With losing two sen-ior starters and graduat-ing six seniors, we’retaking time in practiceto get everyone up tospeed,” Kuehl said.“We’re getting thosekids that don’t have ex-perience or the knowl-edge of how fast thegame can be played atthis level. … It will taketime and experience.”See NFDL GIRLS Page 13

Flyway race goes through LomiraBY PAUL KEUPThe Reporter

Jake Flood is 1-for-1 ashead coach in the Wis-consin Flyway Confer-ence after he led theLomira High School girlsbasketball team to theleague title last season.

But he’s the first one topass credit to formercoach Aaron Olson and,of course, the players.

“I think a lot goes towhat the program hadset up already,” Floodsaid. “I was really theonly new piece to thepuzzle.

“The girls deserve thecredit for what we didlast year; the kids werethe ones who made it go.That’s kind of how thatworks.”

Lomira won the titlewith a 13-1 record, withits lone loss coming toWinnebago Lutheran.

WLA was second at 12-2, and the rivals are ex-pected to be among thetop contenders againthis season.

The Lions graduatedKelsey Weiglein (6.8ppg), but they returnthree junior starters whoaveraged at least 8.4points per game — theNeitzel triplets.

Natalie Neitzel — the2009-10 Flyway Player ofthe Year — averaged 13.1points per game in leagueplay as a sophomore lastseason, finishing only be-hind Mayville juniorDanielle Case (15 ppg).

“Natalie is our floorgeneral; she leads the

team,” Flood said. “Sheshoots the ball real well.… We always know whatwe’re going to get fromNatalie — 100 percent.”

Emily Neitzel averaged9.7 points in the Flywayand also was first-teamall-conference.

“Emily is gifted with alot of athleticism, andalong with that she hasquite a bit of basketballIQ. She has the task ofguarding the otherteam’s best player. She isa real defensive stopper.”

Allison Neitzel earnedsecond-team Flyway hon-ors last season with 8.4points per game.

“Allison is the personwho does all the dirty jobs— she rebounds, she bat-tles underneath forboards. All the jobs no oneelse likes, she does, andshe enjoys doing them. She keeps us together.”

Incoming junior ErinConnell earned honor-able mention with 7.4points per game inleague play last season,

but she injured her kneein August. Her targetedreturn date is Feb. 28,which is her birthday.

“She made it a goal toget back this season,”Flood said. “I’m very con-fident, with the work ethicshe’s shown, that she willget back this season.”

WLA returns second-team Flyway playerKatelyn Kuehl alongwith honorable mentionplayers Molly Sippel andLexi Herrewig.

The teams have devel-oped an intense on-courtrivalry in the past fewseasons.

“It seems like it’s one ofthose rivalries,” Floodsaid. “Whoever wins, thewinner will definitelyearn it. Neither team isgoing to roll over and givethem the victory. Bothteams guard well. Withthat combination … youcan anticipate a dog-fight.

“… When Lomira andWLA go out there, itseems to be quite a bat-tle.”

Other teams will cer-tainly battle for theleague title, though.

“It may be one of thoseyears (with) five teamsthat can beat each otheron any given night,”WLA coach Scott Her-rewig said.

“They really do havepotential to give teamssome problems. I thinkthe conference will bestrong.”

Laconia returns guardBrittany Scheberl, guardAnna Smit and post play-

er Holly Schneider.“I think we should

compete for conference, and I know our confer-ence is very tough thisyear,” Laconia coachRichard Wiese said. “Wehave pieces to put togeth-er. We have a lot of tal-ent, but it’s a matter ofputting it all together.”

The Spartans also willhave Darian Grosskreuz,Mariah Marchant, PaigeSmith and Katelyn Dinsin the rotation.

“Athleticism is one ofour strengths,” Wiesesaid. “We have good ath-letes from top to bottom, from guards to center. …We really have a lot ofrange from the 1-5 posi-tions. The centers canstep back and hit threes, which can really spreadthe floor. … We have a lotof threats to put the ballin the hole.”

Kettle Moraine Luther-an returns second-teamFlyway player LauraZeamer, and North Fonddu Lac returns second-teamer Yolanda Hayes-Barnes.

“The conference racewill still go throughLomira,” North Fondycoach Gary Kuehl said.“They return prettymuch most of theirteam, and they won itlast year. WLA lost somekey players, but they willbe tough. Laconia andKettle Moraine Lutheranalso will be tough. … Isee them as the teams tobeat to get in the upperhalf.”

with Kuehl.“He always has high ex-

Laconia, Omro favored to win FlywayBY MICHAEL ROGERSThe Reporter

The Laconia High School boysbasketball team has all the ingre-dients for a conference champi-onship. The problem for the Spar-tans is that Omro has the sameingredients.

So who will cook up a Flywaytitle this year?

Most of the Flyway coachesstuck with Laconia, mostly be-cause they knew more about theteam from Rosendale, but coachTom King was impressed the onetime he saw the Foxes this sum-mer.

“They are as good as any teamI’ve seen in the last number ofyears in the Flyway; they aregood,” King said. “They are goingto play with a lot of energy, veryathletic, they can push the ball. They’re a tough matchup for any-one.”

The two teams are very similar. Both teams return five starters.

Laconia has a loaded backcourtwith forwards who play theirrole.

Omro has forwards who canbeat the opponent, while theguards do the job of complement-ing.

Laconia will likely look to ZachDeBoer, coming off of surgery torepair his right labrum, to carrythe team in important situations.

DeBoer averaged more than 14points a game and showed hislong range despite playing with abad shooting shoulder most ofthe year.

He’s joined by Sam Mattheis, alightning-quick point guard, whois also deadly from outside. Addin Logan Kinyon to play tight de-fense and sophomore Tyler Seme-nas — younger brother of UWGBplayer Derek Semenas — comingoff the bench, and Laconia willgive opposing backcourts fits.

Brandon Waldschmidt (6-3, Jr.)and Jim Huebschman (6-5, Sr.)are starters in the frontcourt andsolid contributors in their ownright.

“Any time you bring a teamback, the maturity and the finali-ty of their last year sinks in andhas quite an impact,” King said.

“We had WLA down 24-6 in ourplace and let them up. We needthat killer instinct,” King added

about the most important thing.“We have to put that nail in thecoffin when it’s there.”

Teams that play Omro willneed to pay good attention toSteve Egan, a 6-5 senior who aver-aged 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Lucas Allen and Brandon Tylerboth stand 6-foot-3, while RyanWinske will look to reprise hisrole as league’s best player, justlike in football.

The next few teams can’t matchthe depth of Omro or Laconia, but have a star player that cancarry the team.

Kettle Moraine Lutheran’sDylan Rusch may have the mostraw talent in the league and willbe playing collegiately next year. But the Chargers don’t returnany other starters.

North Fond du Lac’s DylanWodsedalek averaged 12 points agame, but only played 12 gamesbecause of injuries.

If he can stay healthy and hissupporting cast — led by JarrodMarose and Travis White in thebackcourt — helps him out, theOrioles should vastly improve onlast year’s 5-18, 5-9 finish.

“I’m optimistic,” North Fonddu Lac coach Pay Lloyd said. “Iknow Laconia is very good.Omro, I’ve seen them play, andthey are tough, and KML is al-ways good. Then there’s us. I real-ly believe we can compete nightin and night out.

“We’ve had some games lostlast year because of free throwsor costly turnovers. I hope theextra year of maturation willhelp them understand more theimportance of every possession.”

Lomira has two excellentguards. Jordan Beck was first-team all-conference last season, and coach Tyler Witkowski ex-pects Beck to lead the Lions inmost stat categories.

“Probably one of the bestthings that Jordan possesses isunselfishness,” Witkowski ex-plained. “He’s more than willingto get everyone involved. His abil-ity to play a complete game is be-yond me.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’sball handling, screening, shoot-ing. He’s able to play a competegame.”

Beck also has 5-foot-10 Zach We-ston, a junior sharp-shooter, butwhat Lomira doesn’t have is a tal-ented big guy. Mitch Luedtke isthe tallest player at 6-3, but noneof Witkowski’s post players aregreat rebounders.

The next group has questionsup and down the roster.

WLA has seven seniors, butthey spent most of last year onthe bench, and coach JeremiahHoffmann isn’t sure what to ex-pect once the games mean some-thing.

Springs lost all five startersfrom a 4-18 team. Of the likelyLedger leaders, a couple of them,Eric Feldner and Evan Hender-son are just sophomores.

Horicon returns four starters, but the Marshmen have beenanything but successful lately.

Finally, Mayville is startingfresh. Tony Scallon has been anassistant on the Mayville girlsteam and an assistant at UW-Stout, but this will be his firsthead coaching gig.

And he doesn’t walk into agreat situation. He only has eightvarsity players right now, two areseniors and two are sophomores.

“We have a fresh start, freshfaces, fresh kids trying to learnand play hard,” Scallon said. “It’sup to them. If they want to buyinto what we’re doing we canhave success. We need to becomea more consistent team.”

Scallon, a ’97 Mayville grad, wants to play up-tempo, play ag-gressive defense and returnMayville basketball to its proudtradition.

With all the new faces, he saidhe expects his two seniors, PaulGiese and Brock Hanke, to leadthe team in his first year on thejob.

“There are a lot of good teams,”King said. “I like it when youhave that type of conference.”

Huskies start over with co-coachesBY DOUG WHITELEYThe Reporter

It has worked well in footballat New Holstein, so there isgood reason to believe the girlsbasketball team can benefitfrom co-head coaches.

Tom Hau returns to theHuskies after a 10-year absence, and Nathan DePagter will be inhis first year as a head coach.Hau coached New Holstein from1985-2001, winning two league ti-tles.

“Our goal is to emulate whatthe football coaches have accom-plished,” Hau said. “Nathan’squite young, and I’m quite a bitolder, and hopefully that blendwill be good for our program, and so far it has. Nathan bringsa lot of enthusiasm to the pro-gram.”

They will need to rebuild afteran 0-14 Eastern Wisconsin Con-ference season last year and a 1-20 mark overall. There seems tobe good talent returning for NewHolstein, however, led by return-ing second-team all-conferenceplayer Amelia Mirsberger.

“She’s our point guard, andshe’s very strong with the ball,”Hau said. “She’s a good perime-ter shooter, and she’s good atpenetrating gaps, too.”

The all-conference first teamin 2009-10 was dominated byseniors, but the second teamhad just one senior.

In addition to Mirsberger, Ply-mouth’s Amanda Gumm wasalso a junior on the second teama season ago, and two sopho-mores — Waupun’s KatieHansen and Kiel’s MikaylaPreissner — also earned second-team accolades.

Mirsberger, a 5-6 guard, aver-aged 10.4 points a game last sea-son.

It should also help theHuskies tremendously to getChelsi Cash back.

Cash, a 5-10 forward, scored12.5 points a game, but was outwith an injured knee for muchof the season.

“When she was able to play

she makes a difference on thefloor,” Hau said. “She’s a veryversatile player; she can play onthe perimeter and is strong inthe post. She attracts a lot of at-tention when she’s on the floor.”

Junior Lauren Voelker is theother returning letter winnerand the next highest returningscorer for the Huskies after shehad a 5.2 points a game average

as a sophomore, and Hau saidVoelker has improved her game.

Waupun had an underclass-man on the second-team all-con-ference list in Hansen.

Hansen averaged in double dig-its last season, scoring 10.7 pointsa game as the Warriors went 8-6in the EWC and 15-9 overall.

Waupun returns a good dealof experience, but it will have to

replace the steady play of four-year varsity player MakaylaHopp, who was voted to the all-league first team.

Last season, Morgan Domaskscored 9.2 points a game in hersophomore season. Missy Kuikadded 8.1 points a game lastyear as a junior, and bothRachel Dickhut and Biz Broad-way scored about 4 points asjuniors.

Kewaskum had a breakoutseason last year under first-yearcoach Mike Kleinhans. The In-dians went 11-3 in the league forsecond behind Sheboygan Falls, which went 13-1 in league play.

The Indians had a senior-domi-nated team led by Anna Butler, who along with Becca Diedrichof Two Rivers and Lauren Car-man of Falls were named tri-players of the year.

Christine Bohn was the mostexperienced underclassman, playing in all 23 games last yearfor the Huskies and averaging3.3 points a game.

Campbellsport also had afirst-year coach last year. Amy(Owens) Siikarla took over forlongtime coach Tom Wilkins, and the Cougars went 3-11 inleague play.

Brianna Halfmann scored 7.6points a game last year forCampbellsport as a junior, earn-ing an honorable mention nodfrom the EWC coaches.

Looking at which teams areprojected frontrunners likelystarts with Falls as it returnshonorable mention players sen-ior Brooke Buehler and sopho-more Staci Hassler.

Plymouth may have the bestshot to win the EWC crown, ac-cording to Hau. The Panthersand Kiel return the majority oftheir teams; Plymouth being ledby Gumm and seniors KaitlynHoffman and Chrissy Perl, whowere both honorable mentionselections last season.

“Those three teams would bethe favorites for the title withPlymouth having the bestchance,” Hau said.

Yedinak back home on Waupun benchBY PAUL KEUPThe Reporter

Bill Yedinak was headcoach of the WaupunHigh School boys basket-ball team for only sevengames before his nationcalled him to service.

Yedinak, a reservemember of the U.S.Army’s 4th Brigade/95thDivision, was called intoa Civil Affairs Unit fromPortland, Ore., in 2008 toserve in Iraq.

The Business and In-formation Technologyteacher said good-bye tohis wife and three chil-dren, and he handed thereins of the basketballprogram to RandyArmga before his deploy-ment.

“That was a toughthing,” said Yedinak, whose unit helped set upwater treatment plantsand other devices to im-prove the sanitary condi-tions around the Bagh-dad area.

“We got going at 7-0,and I had to pull out. That part was tough. I re-turned to coaching a fewyears (as an assistant)and got back into it (after10 years away). What ayear to have everythinglike that happen in aspan of six months.

“From 6,000 miles awayI was their No. 1 fan, Iguarantee that.”

The 2008-09 team tiedPlymouth for the leaguetitle at 13-1, and the 2009-10 team won the EWC at13-1.

Yedinak returned fromIraq in Feb. 2010 withabout three or fourgames remaining, and heserved as an assistant toArmga the rest of theseason as Waupun madeit to the sectional semifi-nals.

Now, upon re-takingthe reins, Yedinak’s War-riors lose all five startersfrom last year, but theWisconsin Basketball

Yearbook still picked theteam to win the EWC.

“They have? Oh, boy. Ididn’t know that. It does-n’t matter anyway. Wehave to take care of busi-ness one way or another.Maybe my first loss willget me the axe, I don’tknow,” Yedinak said witha laugh.

Expectations are highin Waupun because theWarriors’ junior varsityteam went 21-0 last sea-son.

The Warriors will beled by sophomore for-ward Cody Zimmerman, junior guard Nate Hopp, junior forward Ryan Ger-ritson and junior AdamSchmitt.

The rotation also willinclude junior guard Jor-dan Hopp and junior for-ward Colin Visser.

Plymouth returns sec-

ond-team EWC selectionMitch Unger along withMyles Dellger, and thePanthers were pickedsecond by the WBY.

Kiel, which beatWaupun in the sectionalsemifinal, lost star playerBrandon Griese, but it re-turns sharpshooter JoeyBurris and six other sen-iors from last year’s Stateteam.

The Raiders werepicked third, and NewHolstein was pickedfourth ahead of Sheboy-gan Falls, Two Rivers,Campbellsport and Ke-waskum.

“The conference iswide open,” Yedinaksaid. “I wouldn’t put usat the top. We’ll be in themix, but we’re certainlynot the pick to win it.Kiel is coming off a Statetrip and has a nice senior

class. We have primarilyjuniors and sophomoresthat are going to be play-ing. It’s certainly goingto be a tough match. I’mnot saying we can’t bethere.”

New Holstein lost sen-ior first-team playerTyler Zipperer to a kneeinjury before the footballseason, and the Huskieslook to classmates BrettBoettcher and Sam Cashto pick up the slack.

“Obviously it’s going tohurt, but we have to putanother guy on the floor,”New Holstein coach KenStephany said. “Theyplayed the football sea-son without him sothey’re used to it.”

Still, it hurts theHuskies’ preseason ex-pectations to finishfourth.

“I don’t see us at that

spot right now based onnot having Tyler,”Stephany said.

“Waupun and Ply-mouth are the top two,and after that it’s whoev-er plays the best. TwoRivers should have agood team.

“Kiel, even thoughthey lost Brandon Gries, will have a good team.Sheboygan Falls is al-ways tough for us. Weshould be somewhere inthe middle. If we play de-fense and rebound, wemay end up in the fourthplace.”

The title appears to beup for grabs.

“Unlike the past cou-ple years, I don’t thinkthere is any clear front-runner,” Yedinak said.“I’d give the nod to Kiel, but hopefully we’ll be inthe mix.”

CWC, Markesan to tussle in CentralBY DOUG WHITELEYThe Reporter

Central Wisconsin Christianhad a special player and out-standing season in 2010.

The Crusaders featured JaimieKok, who earned the TrailwaysConference Central Division’sPlayer of the Year, they won ashare of the conference title andfinished 23-4 overall.

And although CWC has onlytwo seniors (Shanna Braun-schweig and Lisa O’Connor) backthis year, the Crusaders havegood momentum that may be dif-ficult for league foes to stop.

“We had a great season, fin-ished 23-4 and graduated threequality seniors,” said CWCcoach Mark Vander Werff.“We’ve brought back four expe-rienced players from that teamas well as three other playerswho were very successful intheir two years in the JV pro-gram.

“They know how to wingames, and that’s a big step.”

Markesan was the team thatearned the other share of theleague title. The Hornets went17-7 overall, but they had ayoung squad that was able torise up a season ago.

“At the end of the year lastyear I mentioned to our girlsthat I was as proud of last year’steam as any I’ve ever coached,”

said Markesan coach SkipLaper. “In the (2009-10) presea-son they picked us to finishfourth out of five teams. We hada bunch that, when it came fortime for all-conference, none of

the stats jumped out, but theyplayed very solid as a team.”

The good news for Laper andthe Hornets is they will havenearly the entire team back ex-cept for leading scorer Rea

Rooney, who graduated as a sec-ond-team all-conference player.

Rachel Lang made the firstteam for Markesan and aver-aged 5.4 points a game andabout 3.5 rebounds as a junior.

“We didn’t put a lot of pointson the board; we just did it on thedefensive end and Rachel’s a bigpart of that,” Laper said, men-tioning that Lang has demon-strated that she can put up biggeroffensive numbers at times.

Lang and senior guard AngelaBrown will be in their fourthvarsity seasons for the Hornets.Brown scored about 5 pointslast year, and Laper said shehad a good summer offensively.

The other returning Marke-san player who earned leaguerecognition was Emily Krueger. As a sophomore last season theHornets’ point guard had 6.6points a game.

With that trio and MaddieKelly, Laper said he knows whatto expect from the guard play. What he’s hoping he can get isconsistent offensive play insidefrom Cortney Anderson, whoshowed good promise last yearin scoring 6.5 points as a fresh-man. Anderson is 6-foot-1 andwill be joined inside by 5-10 jun-ior Kelcey Symons.

Oakfield tries to catch Lourdes in NorthBY DOUG WHITELEYThe Reporter

It would be hard to argueagainst Oshkosh Lourdes re-peating as Trailways Confer-ence North Division champions.

The Knights went undefeatedlast season in league play and22-4 overall.

What’s more is Lourdes has thetwo players back for the 2010-11season who were most responsi-ble for that success. North Divi-sion Player of the Year Lexy Pe-termann is back, along with first-teamer Teenie Lichtfuss. Andthey’re both only juniors.

“They only lost one senior, most of their team is coming

back,” said Oakfield coach DaveBenkoske. The Knights alsohave 5-6 junior Hatti Bartlett re-turning to provide help scoringfor Lichtfuss and Petermann.

Oakfield was on Lourdes’heels last year, finishing 11-4 inthe North. The Oaks returnKatie Gross, a senior, whoscored about 10 points a gamelast season. Kayla Rymer is a 5-10 senior who added 6.3 pointsand was named all-conferencesecond team.

“I’m expecting (Gross) to befirst team all-conference alongwith Kayla Rymer,” Benkoskesaid. “(Rymer) was the sixthvote-getter. I think if she scores

more last year she makes firstteam. It’s all confidence. I thinkshe turned down shots last yearshe probably shouldn’t have.”

In addition to Gross andRymer, Jami Fink is a seniorcaptain who Benkoske said is asmart ballplayer and had a goodoffseason.

Benkoske said the Oaks willstrive to gain ground on Lour-des while working to improvetheir game. The one thing thatwould make Oakfield even bet-ter is finishing around the hoopon a more consistent basis.

“Our shooting percentage …there were a lot of games weshot in the teens and that’s not

good,” the coach said. “It’s hardto win games like that. Makingall the puppy shots and layups,we have to do better at. And, ofcourse, play good defense.”

Even if the Oaks are able toboth shoot and defend better itmay not be enough to beat theKnights, or maybe it might.Benkoske said Lourdes shouldwin it with the players it has,but the Oaks aren’t going to con-cede anything.

“I’m saying they should,”Benkoske said. “I’m thinkingthat we’re going to push themthis year, at least I hope wewould. But they have to be thefavorite.”

Oaks chase Green Lake in T’ways NorthBY MICHAEL ROGERSThe Reporter

The Trailways Conference isused to players being recruitedby NCAA Division I schools. Butalmost all of them played at Ran-dolph High School.

But, in a rare occasion this sea-son, it’s Green Lake with the bestplayer in the conference, and thatmakes the Lakers a clear-cut fa-vorite in the North Division.Don’t worry, Randolph is still incontrol of the Central Division.

Green Lake junior forwardMatt Van Scyoc measures 6-foot-5and has an effortless leapingability. Not surprisingly, mid-major and small-major DivisionI programs are after him. Andthe Trailways North teams haveto figure out how to stop him.

“He’s such a strong kid. I knowhe plays a lot of basketball dur-ing the summer,” Oakfield coachKyle Seyfert said. “I don’t thinkthere is (a player as good). He’shead and shoulders above every-one in the league. I think they’regoing to have a nice team with alot of quality.”

The Lakers lose Brad Brooksand his 17 points per game toRipon College, but they do re-turn Van Scyoc’s 14 points aswell as Curtis Morgan’s back-

court play from last year’s sec-tional runners-up.

The top player is clear cut, butthe second-best player and thesecond-best team is anything butset.

Oakfield’s Jeremiah Erdmannwas a first-team all-division se-

lection after averaging 16.4points per game. The quick andshifty guard carried the Oaks onhis back several times andscored more than 20 points oneight occasions.

“There’s going to be a lot moreof the same this year. We have a

few players, but we’re low onnumbers,” Seyfert said. “We’regoing to be looking for morefrom Jeremiah — more scoring(and) more leadership, but wehave a few players that can stepup and make plays.”

Erdmann showed his scoringprowess a year ago, but Seyfertis hoping for Erdmann to showmore of his passing ability. TheOaks have returners, but with-out graduated Cody Veleke, Erd-mann’s going to have to do morefor his teammates.

One player who may makethings easier for Erdmann isJosh Holz. The senior is 6-1 butwill have to play bigger with noone on the established rotationtaller than 6-1.

Holz averaged 7 points pergame, and the only other return-ing player to make a dent wasBrayden Ryan, who averaged 2 agame.

Joe Brooks of Oshkosh Lour-des is the third returning first-team all-division player, and hewill lead a Knights team that al-ways contends.

“I’d watch Oshkosh Lourdes. That’s a nice team every year,”Seyfert said. “Them and GreenLake, those two teams are the fa-vorites.”

THE REPORTER FILE PHOTO

Oakfield’s Jeremiah Erdmann (12) drives past Central Wisconsin Christian’sLuke Ganz last season. Erdmann earned first-team Trailways North honors.

Markesan, CWC look up to Randolph in CentralBY MICHAEL ROGERSThe Reporter

For a change, Randolph does-n’t have a 6-foot-10 player thisyear. That’s likely the only thingthat will change, though, withthe Rockets.

With TJ Huizenga ready totake on more responsibility andbecome the next great Randolphfavorite, don’t expect anyone tobeat Randolph any time soon.

“TJ, he’s turning into one ofthose special players,” Markesancoach Josh Gibbons said. “Hecan take over the game. He cando whatever he wants to do. He’llbe their leader, but they have alot around him.”

CWC coach Dan Ten Napel wasmore cautious, however, sayingno one really knows how Huizen-

ga will react to facing defensivescrutiny and not having currentUW-Milwaukee player Kyle Kelmto take pressure off.

Those two coaches and theirteams expect to jockey for sec-ond place in the five-team Trail-ways Central Division.

For the first time in five yearsMarkesan’s football team hadsuccess behind an athletic seniorclass. Gibbons expects that tocarry over to the hoops season.

“Yeah, actually I am. It’s kindof the first year since I’ve beenthe head basketball coach thatthe football team was success-ful,” Gibbons said. “I was aroundthat, too. It’s been real positive.

“I think the guys grew up play-ing football (during the season).I’m excited, and the guys are ex-

cited to have it carry over.”It doesn’t hurt that four

starters return. Alex Dallman,Zach Schwoch, Joe Quade andCody Laper all averaged between7 and 9 points per game. The fourof them are mostly backcourtplayers.

The leading scorer providesthe height and muscle for theHornets. Greg Krenz (6-5) aver-aged 11 points and more than 6rebounds per game in earningfirst-team division honors. He’sthe only returning first-teamer.

Gibbons said points won’t be aproblem — stopping opposing of-fenses will be.

“I always think how we playteam defense and rebound thebasketball (is critical),” he said.“If we get stops defensively, we’ll

be OK. We have a lot of guys thatcan score; we have a lot of op-tions that way. If we can holdteams down we’ll be OK.”

Meanwhile, Ten Napel is wor-ried about getting his best play-ers on the court. Two of his play-ers were dealing with concus-sions at the start of the season.Derek De Young is out until atleast February with an injury, and Nate Miller is returningfrom an ACL injury.

Another question mark re-volves around replacing JacobVan Den Berg. Van Den Berg hadsix double-doubles and averaged17 points from his post position.Ten Napel expects Luke Ganz (6-2) and Marty De Vries (6-4) tomake big strides in replacingVan Den Berg.

Smit will be a three-yearstarter on the Fondy varsity. Hesaid he tuned up his ball-han-dling abilities this summer, andhe hopes he’s better at finishingplays with either drives or pull-up jump shots.

Another thing Smit did for thethird consecutive offseason wasa workout program with CoreyWencl, who works for Agnesianand is the Fondy High trainer.

Smit said the program hashelped with his conditioning, quickness and strength. Thispast summer he talked friendsLucas Wendt, Logan Wendt andDavid Zimmerman into joininghim.

“After the second year, I wentout and started recruiting somebasketball guys because I felt ithelped me out tremendously,” hesaid.

Smit should help Fondy outtremendously. Zakos said he hasseen Smit be able to score in var-ious ways, but he also distrib-utes the ball like a true pointguard, and that’s the thing thatwill help him at the collegiatelevel.

Smit said he does have designson playing after high school, but

he will wait until after the sea-son to weigh his options.

What Zakos likes about thisyear’s experienced team is theywon’t have to rely on Smit tocarry the load offensively.

“We have a variety of optionswhere we could have a differentleading scorer several times dur-ing the season,” the coach said.“I think we have a lot of guyswho can contribute and be activescoring-wise.”

One of those players is seniorKyle Kretschmann, who aver-aged about 8 points a game lastyear.

Zakos said Kretschmann is aplayer who can emerge offensive-ly if he has an aggressive ap-proach. Smit said he’s got confi-dence in his teammate and hopes

he has it in himself now, too.“I definitely see Kyle … last

year he was a little timid shoot-ing the ball,” Zakos said. “Overthe summer we worked on get-ting him confidence in his jumpshot, and this year I see him hav-ing a big season and being ableto do that.”

Zakos said all eight seniorsshould contribute in some waythis season, which he attributesto their hard work and time putinto the game.

Joey Schroeder is a three-yearvarsity player who was also theCardinals’ football quarterback. He managed the game well onthe gridiron, and Zakos said heis making better decisions withthe basketball.

Both of Schroeder’s targets onthe football field will take theirathletic abilities to the court. Se-niors Anthony Pouchert andCharles Moore are both playerswho will be quality defenders, al-though Zakos said anyone whosteps on the floor better be ableto defend first and foremost.Schroeder scored about 7 pointsa game last year, and Moore hadabout 4.

Tyler McArthur is the onlyother Cardinal returning whoscored any substantial points. He had 7 a game last year, but hedoes more than score.

“He does a little bit of every-thing,” Zakos said. “He can re-

bound, knock down the 15-footerand move without the ball. He’sthe guy that will do a lot ofthings that will not show up onthe stat sheet.”

Lucas Wendt, at 6-2, will be aFondy post player, and the coachsaid Wendt is solid in every as-pect and always gives steady ef-fort.

Eric Sipiorski is a seniorguard who is back after an ex-tended illness last year took himout of the mix.

Zakos said juniors Mitch Hen-drix and Jake Diener will findminutes as well as sophomoreMax Schebel, who is a 6-2 sopho-more center.

Appleton East may be the teamto beat in the league — and inthe state — behind point guardJohnny Coenen, who is a unani-mous pick and the only first-team all-FVA player returningfrom last year.

Coenen scored 12 points for thePatriots who went on to play intothe state semifinals before losingto Madison Memorial. They won22 games a season ago and areranked No. 5 in all of Division 1in the state by the WisconsinBasketball Yearbook.

“Appleton East, they’ve beenour rivals ever since thirdgrade,” Smit said. “Our mainfocus is on them, and OshkoshNorth is very athletic. Those aregoing to be very tough games.”

At 5 feet, 10 inches Bonlandercan shoot it from outside, or playon the block with her back to thebasket.

“She’s a tough match-up forany team,” Follis said. “If theyguard her with a big girl, we canbring her outside, and if theyguard her with a small girl wecan take her inside.”

Most teams tried to put a big-ger player on Bonlander, and thatworked with mixed results.

Follis said starting spots hadyet to be won during the firstweek of practice, but he said heis envisioning a fairly balancedteam.

“I think we’re pretty solid andeven,” he said. “I think there’sgoing to be good competition forspots.”

Osborn, a 5-8 senior, scored

about 8 points a game last sea-son.

“Elizabeth Osborn should giveus a good amount, and probablyDevin Dilling,” Follis said whenasked who would help providethe scoring punch.

Emily Riese will again likelysee plenty of time as a junior.

The volleyball standout averagedabout 7 points a game last year.

“She’s really strong and shecan jump,” Follis said, indicatinghe expects good rebounding fromRiese. “She does a really nice jobof anticipating.”

The Cardinals went 7-11 in theFVA for seventh in the leaguelast year, and it would seem like-ly that they are ready to make ajump in the league standings.

“The big thing is we’re going tohave to be better at defense,”Bonlander said. “We’re going tohave to be better at that becauseyou can’t win without defense.Once we perfect that we’ll begood because we’re usually pret-ty good on the offensive side.”

Well, the Cardinals were goodon offense, except when therewas no one defending from exact-ly 15 feet in front of the hoop.

Follis said there are two offen-sive aspects at which the teamneeds to improve substantially.

“Shoot free throws; I think we

shot 56 percent from the free-throw line,” he said. “The otherthing was turnovers. We aver-aged 20 turnovers a game lastyear. Ball security is going to be amajor focus of ours, making surewe take care of the basketball. That will give our team morechances to score and then theother team less chances to score.

“With those two (problems)we’re leaving a lot of points onthe floor. Hopefully that wouldswing a lot of the closer gamesour way.”

Follis said it is difficult to proj-ect a winner in the FVA, but Ap-pleton East’s got one of the topplayers in MarissaMichalkiewicz, the only unani-mous selection by the coaches forthe all-FVA first team last year.

The 6-foot lefty is primarily aninside player, but will not shyaway if given an open 3-pointer.East only went 10-8 last year, butMichalkiewicz scored 13.1 andwas only a sophomore.
