open 7 Days a week

Book World opens seven days at 9 a.m. The store closes at 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 5 p.m. Saturdays, and at 4 p.m. Sundays.

The store is closed only two days annually — on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Wednesdays are Punch Card Double Days, and the first Wednesday of each month is Senior Citizens Day.

Book World Inc. is a Midwest chain based in Appleton. The first store opened in Rhinelander in 1976, and the chain has grown to 40 stores in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota.

For more information, call (920) 922-2980. Visit online at www.bookworldstores.com.

Tracy McDermott serves as manager at Book World, 85 S. Main St. (pATrick FLood/The reporTer)

If you’re yearning to read the latest bestseller, need to research a hot topic or are searching for a guidebook on your next travel destination, you might want to head downtown.

Whether it’s the hardcover, paperback or electronic variety, books are in great supply in downtown Fond du Lac — and area residents seem to enjoy reading.

Book World, located at 85 S. Main St., and the Fond du Lac Public Library, 32 Sheboygan St., can attest to that.

Last year, more than 830,000 items were checked out of the Fond du Lac Public Library system, which includes three satellite sites located at St. Agnes Hospital, Festival Foods and Rosendale (now closed). The number of books housed at the library totals 156,000. In addition, there are 12,000 audio materials and about 17,000 video materials.

Book World — long a staple of downtown — offers an extensive selection of books, magazines, newspapers, maps, some gift items, and a line of fine tobacco products.

Customer base

“We have something for everyone — all ages and interests,” said Tracy McDermott,

manager at Book World. “The printed word is magic. Even though electronic books have made their way into society, the real thing is still preferred by many. We have a customer base that wants the book in their hand. We have a very strong business.”

McDermott said she believes in being downtown.

“We have regulars who walk in on their lunch breaks for items like candy bars, sodas, and newspapers,” she said. “We’re in a convenient location for them.”

Book World offers fiction, non-fiction, bestsellers and more, with items arranged in sections to denote various themes such as science fiction, romance and self-help books.

“We have a really extensive line, from reference books to school books and sections that focus on history and arts and crafts,” she said. “There is also a great kids section, including young readers books.”

In addition, Book World carries large print books, books on CD, a large selection of magazines and newspapers from near and far such as The Reporter, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, (Madison) Wisconsin State Journal, Chicago Tribune, Wall

Street Journal, USA TODAY and the New York Times.

extra serviCes

Extra services provided at Book World include the ability for staff to order most books requested at no extra charge.

“We also accommodate our customers by placing regular holds on books, magazines or newspapers they request,” McDermott said.

A punch card program, coupons, and discounts on books for registered book club members are extra incentives customers enjoy.

Learning toys, Beanie Babies, greeting cards, sports-related collector cards, and CDs that promote easy-listening music can be found on racks surrounding row-after-row of books and magazines.

“With a full line of tobacco products that includes pipes and fine cigars, we have customers come in for multiple reasons,” McDermott said. “There is no other store in the downtown that offers a complete leisure experience like Book World does. Where else can you purchase a pipe and take your favorite magazine or book home to read on your patio?”

For those who are using Fond du Lac Public Library

services for the first time, a visit to the front desk will get them a free library card once they show proof of address.

The card entitles the card holder to free rentals of books, music, magazines, audio books and more for 21 days, with one 21-day renewal available. DVDs can be checked out for seven days, with an option of renewing for another seven-day period. A renewal is denied if another person is waiting for that particular book or movie.

Daily fines on overdue materials are 10 cents/adults and 5 cents/children. Daily fines for overdue movies are 50 cents/adults and 25 cents/for children. Returning items is easy with a drive-through book drop in the parking lot of the downtown library location. The soon-to-open FDLPL Express branch near Festival Foods will also have an outdoor book drop.

Hours at the main library location on Sheboygan Street: Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (From October through April, the library is also open Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.)

For more information, call the library at (920) 929-7080 or visit online at www.fdlpl.org.

The Fond du Lac Public Library, located at its present site since 1904, is a haven for readers, researchers, students, seniors and tiny tots.

As the age of technology has advanced, the options for reading and learning at the library have expanded beyond hardcover or paperback books, newspapers and magazines. Now, patrons can find audio books, music CDs, Playaways (one-book MP3 players) and, in the very near future, e-reader book rentals will be available.

“The modern library patron wants what she wants when she walks in the door,” said Terri Fleming, community information coordinator at the Fond du Lac Public Library. “And overwhelmingly, that patron wants bestseller and new materials such as books, movies and audio books.”

That trend is impacting purchasing decisions.

“The advent of the Internet has changed the way we invest in reference material,” Fleming said. “Instead of huge numbers of reference books, we allocate those resources to purchase patron access to online databases.”

siGN oF the times

Another sign of the times, Fleming notes, is the disappearance of records or cassettes and the dwindling VHS supply.

“We are in an information age, and people are accustomed to getting their information immediately,” Fleming said. “The library’s new FDLPL Express branch — due to open this fall at The Shops at Johnson Crossing — will feature a ‘to-go’ collection of popular materials, plus books to appeal to busy families — cooking, crafts, hobbies, home decorating, repair and more.”

Books can be located throughout the vast space at the Fond du Lac Public Library’s main location on Sheboygan Street.

Specific areas are designated for certain age groups or types of books. Among them are the Children’s Room, Teen section, adult fiction and nonfiction, the Spanish collection, Hmong collection, Lucky Day Books/DVDs, the Green Living collection, Money Smart collection, Seefeld Local History Room and large-print books.

Bestsellers are promoted at the library with the “Lucky Day” idea.

“We set aside a number of copies of the most-popular or newest bestsellers for both adults and children, and we call them Lucky Days. If it’s here when you are here, it’s your lucky day,” said Fleming, noting that the bestsellers are limited to one-time checkout, with no renewals or holds available. “They’re found at all of our library locations.”

Classics that remain popular carry famous authors’ names such as Twain, Shakespeare, Austin and Steinbeck, Fleming said.

WisCoNsiN books

“These are the books people go back to over and over again,” she said.

“Fond du Lac readers really enjoy reading books set in Wisconsin, and we make a point of keeping our collection very current with local and state materials.”

Fleming predicts that books will not disappear from library shelves, even though electronic methods of reading are here.

“It’s still so new that the impact of e-books and e-readers has yet to be fully understood,” she said. “Libraries around the world are in the process of sorting this out. But one thing is for certain — e-books and e-readers are only going to grow in popularity and impact, and the modern library must adapt to the changing needs of their customers.

“When television came along, pundits predicted the death of radio. When Internet came along, they predicted the death of TV. Now the rise of e-books is resulting in similar dire predictions for printed material. No one knows for certain, but we assume that while their predominance and use will change, printed books will remain.”
