Compostur, Santiago de Compostela’s Official Tour OperatorIn view of the dynamic nature of the tourist industry and the high degree of competition among an increasinglysaturated number of destinations, the municipal company Turismo de Santiago decided to participate activelyin the direct commercialisation of initiatives in the national and international markets.

This has resulted in Compostur, the city of Santiago’s official tour operator, a brand belonging to Turismode Santiago that is run under concession by the Viajes Viloria wholesale/retail travel agency.

COMPOSTUR has the following main objectives:• Defining, preparing and designing the necessary tools for generating products based on two different concepts:Santiago de Compostela and the Way of St. James.• Creating commercialisation channels with the national and international tourist markets, in order to promoteall product areas that are generated in relation to the city and the Way.

COMPOSTUR is basically made up of three main fields:1. Creation of the city’s official reservation office, based on a 902 hotline and the websitewww.SantiagoReservas.com2. Management of the commercial area within Turismo de Santiago’s tourist offices, whose role will changefrom informing about to providing services: accommodation bookings, contracting activities (guided tours, trips, rafting, golf, spas, tourist transport, etc).3. Definition and creation of tourist packages to be marketed in the wholesale and retail market, bothnationally and internationally.

This is the first initiative in Spain regarding an OFFICIAL LOCAL TOUR OPERATOR, with both public and privatecapital: COMPOSTUR.

Santiago de Compostela, a World Heritage City and capital of Galicia. Sincethe 9th century, when the Apostle James’ tomb was discovered, it has alsobeen the final destination of a thousand-year-old pilgrim route: the Way ofSt. James, which has transformed this “finis terrae” into a meeting place offaith and thinking in the Western world.

Santiago de Compostela is a stone apparition nestled among the green forestsof northwest Spain and the nearby Galician “rias”, made of the granite of itsCathedral and its monasteries, its numerous churches, its university buildings, its stately houses and squares in which time has stood still.

Visitors can enjoy its treasures in thirteen museums, as well as the surprisingrichness of its contemporary architecture, surrounded by an outstandingseries of parks and gardens.

Its cultural expressions include the “Apóstol” Festival, declared of InternationalTourist Interest, music, cinema, theatre and dance festivals, or permanentand travelling exhibitions.

5WAY OF ST. JAMES

W A Y O F S T . J A M E SThe pilgrimage to Santiago soon became the most outstanding and most profoundlyexperienced religious and cultural phenomenon in the Middle Ages. This was recentlyacknowledged by the European Parliament, which designated the Way as Europe’s FirstCultural Itinerary, and by UNESCO, which declared it a World Heritage Route.

HistoryAccording to an ancient tradition, St. James, one of the twelve apostles, travelled toHispania and reached Galicia, at the end of the earth, to spread Christianity.

In the year 44 he was executed in Jerusalem. Since his burial was forbidden, his disciplessailed the sea as far as Galicia, where he was buried. His tomb was forgotten until theyear 813, when a bright light indicated the site.

After the tomb’s discovery, the Apostle was proclaimed the patron saint of the smallChristian kingdom in the northwest Iberian Peninsula, becoming a guide and support ofChristendom, while Islam prospered in the centre and south of the Peninsula.

A chapel was erected on the site and, with the passing of time, it was turned into amonumental Cathedral. A wonderful priestly city, Santiago de Compostela, arose andgrew around the Cathedral. This also marked a turning point in the spiritual history ofa continent that soon undertook the construction of a road to reach the precious relics.

The Ways of St. JamesHowever, the “Way of St. James” is in fact 9 pilgrim routes, which are called after thepilgrims’ place of origin:

• French Way of St. James• Aragonese Way of St. James• Original Way of St. James• Northern Way of St. James• Portuguese Way of St. James• English Way of St. James• Way of St. James to Finisterre• “Vía de la Plata”• Arousa Sea and Ulla River Jacobean Itinerary

The Route Par Excellence: the French Way of St. JamesThere are two alternatives, depending on the place where pilgrims enter Spain fromFrance. However, the French Way, strictly speaking, enters Spain via Saint Jean Piedde Port (France) and runs for 774 kilometres through the provinces of Navarre, La Rioja,Burgos, Palencia, León, Lugo and A Coruña. Averaging 20-25 kilometres per day, it usuallytakes around 30 days to reach the final destination.

Compostela Holy YearIn the 12th century, the papacy granted the Plenary Jubilee of the Holy Year, therebymaking Santiago the Third Holy City after Jerusalem and Rome. Since then, wheneverthe Apostle’s feast day (July 25th) falls on a Sunday (which takes place according to thefollowing pattern: 6, 5, 6, 11 years), thousands of pilgrims come to receive forgivenessfor all of their sins. There have been 118 Holy Years: the last ones were in 1993, 1999,2004 and the next ones will be in 2010 and 2021.

The CompostelaThis is the document that certifies that the Way has been completed according toChristian devotion. It is granted to pilgrims that justify having completed at least thelast 100 km on foot or horseback or the last 200 km by bike. To that end, a log is providedand stamped daily in the hostels and parishes through which the pilgrim passes.

The Costa Ártabra is the region of the Artabrians. Ancient legends belongingto the Celtic oral tradition shared by Galicia and Ireland speak aboutBreogán, son of Brath, as the king in this area and founder of the city ofBrigantia (Art-o Briga). He is supposed to have built in what is now ACoruña a tower or lighthouse that was later reconstructed by the Romans:the Tower of Hercules.

The landscape combines sea and mountains with a coastline of beautifulbeaches, some that are sheltered, located inside the “rias”, and othersthat are wild and open to the ocean. The terrain gradually becomes moredifficult, climbing to heights of more than 500 m to form spectacular cliffsoverlooking the sea. This is a region of natural viewpoints, “cruceiros”(stone crosses), forests, wild horses and legends, including Galicia’s mostfamous rural sanctuary: San Andrés de Teixido, an ancient pilgrimagesite.

Finally, the trip stops in the city of A Coruña to visit, among other sights, the Hercules Lighthouse.

With more than 2,000 years of history, Lugo enjoyed the status of districtcapital during Roman times. Its walls date from the year 14 B.C. and area World Heritage Site. With a perimeter of more than 2 km, which canbe toured entirely on foot, they alone make the city worth visiting. Behindthe walls lie narrow streets with a traditional atmosphere and historicalsquares featuring monuments of interest, among which the Cathedralstands out. Near Lugo is the Viladonga “castro”, which is one of the mostcomplete fortified settlements that can be visited. There is also aneducational museum that explains the lifestyle of Galicia’s inhabitantswhen the Romans arrived. Lugo’s gastronomy provides another reason formaking this trip.

OURENSE AND O RIBEIRO: Medieval Towns amidst Vineyards

Ourense was already important in Roman times, which is the period towhich the plinths of its old bridge belong. Its main features are its Cathedral(12th century and later) and the churches, streets, squares and gardensof its elegant historical quarter, which reflects the good lifestyle of apeaceful provincial city. This is also the city of the “Burgas”: three springswith a temperature of around 70oC, whose existence has given rise tomany theories and explains the importance of hydrotherapy in the area.

Nearby is the O Ribeiro region, one of inland Galicia’s most interesting. The passing of the centuries has left behind important monumental richeshere: medieval towns, monasteries, churches and “pazos” (ancestralhomes) dot this area of gentle relief, fertile soil and privileged climate, which produces Ribeiro wine, whose quality was already recognised bythe Romans. Its most important town is Ribadavia: declared a Historical-Artistic Site in 1947, it is a medieval jewel featuring an important Jewishquarter.

The trip goes through theregion watered by the River Ulla, an area of great interest due to itsscenery, vegetation and old monuments. San Xoán da Cova is the site ofPonte Gundián, an old engineering feat that still functions as a trainviaduct and is an icon throughout the entire region. The landscape isdominated by the silhouette of Pico Sacro, Galicia’s most beautiful andsymbolic peak, featuring medieval rooms, which is well worth visiting.
