At the beginning of the research process, the fact that dada meant everything but means nothing was very confusing. Once everyone in the group had done their individual research we shared our information and recieved a clearer understanding. This was when we realised that when we start the actual producer manifesto that we should all go ahead and do our own research and pull it together from the different parts of information we have gathered. This worked out pretty well in the end because from the research we had individually gathered we were able to make a point each towards the guidelines of our manifesto.

DadaismFor this part of the brief I looked at how dada influenced graphic designers before and now.

I found out that dada didnt end after the period it was created in. The elements of dadaism was carried on by people called the neo dadaist, which consisted of art movements such as surrealism, Fluxus, Pop art and Nouveau realisme.

In the 21st century we still use techniques that dadaism started. For example photomontages and typography, however these element are now used differently using the new technology we have available to us.

As a group we found that the main point we gathered from our first point of research was that everyone and anyone is producing.

Amatuer producers and proffesional producers was a point we looked into depth, but as a group we found that the line between these catogories is fading away.

Some members of the group visited the power of making exhibition at the v&a, this was a major influence to our manifesto as it clarified and backed up the point that ‘everyone and anyone is producing’. The rest of the group members decided to carry out a mini production with a small concept we had created.

Producer researchThe group organised a few interviews which also guided us in the right direction. We interviewed people who have produced different types forms of art, videos, websites etc. Some of them were peers in our class and others were graduates that have exerienced producing professional work.

The reason we chose these specific people are because they’re producers of culture in todays society.

InterviewsDocumentaries were another form of secondary research that helped us understand the role of the producer today. The main documentary that was highly influentual was Press Pause Play, as it was very contemporary so we could relat more to their opinions.

I came up with a mini concept using the research I had done, the idea was to portray the fact that due to the technology available to us we are all able to produce. Using this concept me and a couple of group members started the production by asking a student from the university to create the first thing that came to her mind if we gave her 20 - 40 seconds. We then used her production and asked the next person to create the first thing that came to their mind when they saw what the previous production was. This varied from drawings, facial expressions, speaking in foreign languages. After this process of our primary research we found that we didnt

My participationhave a strong meaning behind what we were doing. So this directed our group in the direction of finding a meaning behind everything you do. This is how we created one of the points of our manifesto which was “To produce with responsibility and for a purpose.”

- Celebrating the future and the past.

-Using different skills and mediums within different areas.

-Participating and collaborating.

-If it doesnt work then make it better.

-Producing with responsibility.

Our ManifestoWe presented our manifesto as an interactive open source piece. It was constructed with cardboard and paint to represent the manifesto point “celebrating the future and the past”. We then projected short animations and clips onto the mask to represent the future.

As a group we constructed different parts of the mask to represent the participating and collaborating point. This is where we split the group into the team from the past and the team of the future. Half of us then worked on the mask and the other half on the projections.

I was involved in making the projections and collecting the clips that were going to be played on top of the mask.

I decided to gather the footage that I did because it expresses and shows the contemporary world. The clips were no longer than twenty seconds, they varied from a clip of my walking to a clip of a light flickering. We then construceted the projection as a long clip that would be played across the face.

When we did this we realised that it got a bit boring to watch after a few clips. So we then decided that we were going to split the clips into individual sections of the mask.

Before I started my documentary I referred back to some notes I took down when watching Press Pause Play. The main thing I gathered was that you should try and make the clips short and interesting to watch. Relating the image to what is being said is another key point and the information should flow.

ResearchMy documentary shows a clear outline of what our group did to end up with the final outcome. We used many sources of research to create a strong meaning behind what we had done. I have used the main parts of our recordings to show this and our process of making our manifesto piece.
