Budget Changes This fall, members of student government, ASFLC, had to make some tough choices. A decrease in stu-dent enrollment directly translated to ASFLC having a reduction in their revenue generated by the Stu-dent Activities Fee, a mandatory fee paid by all stu-dents in the amount of $4.80/credit hour. ASFLC’s revenue reduction equated to approximately $32,000 that needed to be cut from the original budget.

ASFLC held an open meeting for all Student Organ-izations and presented a plan to make an across--board budget reduction for all RSO IIs and IIIs (KDUR, Environmental Center, ASFLC, Club del Centro, Engineers Without Borders, Images, The In-dependent, PRISM, SUP, Wanbli Ota, and WellPAC).

The plan was met with mostly unanimous approval by the attending RSOs. Other RSOs will not see any adjustments to grants or initial allocations. Final discussion and voting will take place Wednesday, October 1st @ 7:00pm in the Senate Chambers (163 Student Union). For any questions, please con-tact Chloe Canterbury, Financial Allocation Board Director.

We Heard You! Last year the Leadership Center received feedback from our students on how to improve our programs and services. We want you to know

that we heard you! Here are the changes we have made:

This year, the training for Registered Student Organization officers was

condensed and offered different breakout sessions depending on what

each organization needed. Topics covered included fundraising, travel

procedures, purchasing guidelines, event planning, and grants. Overall,

the event had good participation and seemed more beneficial to our stu-

dent leaders. If you attended and have feedback, please let us know.

At the beginning of each school year, our student staff who operate the

front desk receive training on how to assist RSOs and other community

members that may come into the Leadership Center. This year, they were

required to attend RSO Training to better understand the needs of the

officers and to be better educated on RSO procedures and policies.

Last year, we implemented Leadership Enrichment And Development

(LEAD) to offer a more engaging program for students to develop their

leadership skills and knowledge. Based on feedback, participants wanted

more opportunities to connect to other students; therefore LEAD was

reformatted to be offered in a cohort model. The cohort model allows

LEAD to be run like a class or organization that meets once a week at the

same time for several weeks in a row. This gives students the chance to

meet and get to know other people in a fun and interactive environment.

The Leadership Center is now accept-

ing applications from Fort Lewis Col-

lege students to attend an Alternative

Weekend in Utah on October 24th -

26th. Students selected to attend will

only have to pay $50 for the whole

trip (includes meals, camping

equipment, transportation, and a raft-

ing trip)! Spaces are limited so apply by

October 8 to be considered!

Alternative Weekend What is an Alternative

Weekend?

An Alternative Weekend is a

trip taken by a group of

students who volunteer to

serve and learn about a social

issue like poverty, education,

at-risk youth, environmental

concerns, and many more.

The experience is aimed at

education through immersion

and civic engagement.

We will be participating in the Moab River Rendezvous, which is an educational

gathering and celebration of rivers, conservation, history, and community. This

trip helps support ecological restoration projects, conducted by Plateau

Restoration in the Colorado River watershed, in Moab, UT. There will also be

time for a rafting excursion down the Colorado River!

Complete the

application on the

Leadership Center

website and return it

to Patrick Fredricks in

171 Student Union.

RSO Advisors All Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) are required to have a FLC

faculty or staff advisor in order to be recognized at Fort Lewis College. But

what do they do? Every RSO has different needs, thus each advisor is need-

ed in different ways. In general, we like to say that students in RSOs “drive

the bus” while the advisor “holds the map and compass.” In other

words, the advisor should make sure the organization is on course to be

successful, but not be the one doing things to bring about the success.

An advisor at Fort Lewis College is:

A liaison between student organiza-

tions and the Leadership Center

A liaison between the organization

and the College

An interpreter of College policy

A resource providing historical con-

text and continuity during periods of

transition/change

A mediator during times of interper-

sonal conflict

A motivator

A mentor

A person who sets the example

Thank you to all the current advisors for stepping up and going above

and beyond! We hope that the students understand the importance of

your role and the commitment you have made in this capacity. Your ser-

vice does not go unnoticed by the Leadership Center. If you ever have

any questions or requests, please come see us or give us a call!

ment opportunity for

students, would like

to nominate a stu-

dent leader of the

month, or want to

partner with us for an

event, please let us

know. This newsletter

is created for you, so

we want your input

on what is important.
