September FishingForecast

Capt. Jim BrittonSaltytalesfishingcharters.com

Fall is finally here! As the heat indexfinally drops away from 100 degrees, the month of September provides twonoticeable events which willinfluence inshore and surf fishing-thefall mullet run and flood tides. As the mullet run begins, anglers willfind bluefish and Spanish mackerel inthe inlets and following the largeschools in the surf. Target thesetoothy fish with a well-constructedartificial, such as a Gotcha plug or asuspending Mirrolure. A live mulleton a fish finder rig, fished from thepier or in a beach run out, will be thekey to landing nice sized flounder andredfish. Pompano can still be found inthe surf, as well, using sand fleas or asmall piece of Fishbites artificial bait. The fall mullet run will get manyspecies of fish stirring in the riveralso. Jack crevalle, ladyfish, bluefish, tarpon, and trout will all be foundchasing the mullet schools travelingthe ICW. Target these fish with a

suspending hard bait, soft plasticjerkbaits, or a gold spoon. But for me,the start of fall means flood tidefishing! Consult your tide charts tofind the days with the highest hightides. On these days, plan to searchyour favorite grass bank for tailingredfish. During the flood tides redfishand sheepshead will move up into thegrass and feed on the snails that areon the grass blades. Bring yourwading shoes as anchoring the boatand walking out may be the bestapproach (remember to do the“stingray shuffle”). Target these fishwith a live shrimp, your favorite flypattern, or a small artificial crab.Offshore anglers should enjoy a moreactive bottom bite this month.Grouper will move onto the shallowerwrecks and reefs (70 to 90 feet).Triggerfish, black sea bass, and eventhe occasional lionfish should beavailable also. Remember whenanchored up to free line a live sardineto entice cobia and amberjack thatwill be lurking around these sameareas. Sailfish can be targeted bytrolling skirt and ballyhoo combosthroughout September as well.

The Kids Invitational Tournament was held on July 29th and is an offshoot of the Annual KidsClinic held this year on July 15th where families received a raffle ticket. The number of raffletickets pulled depended on how many captains signed up to take a child and parent out ontheir boat on Tournament Day.We had nine boats captained by Chuck Gleichmann, Chris Davy, Gary Fisher, Jim and ClaireMcIntyre, Chuck Durkee, Mark Goodman, Walt Huresky and Ellen Scheurer, Andrew Puskas,Chuck Radloff, and myself. We had ten kids and parents - all who seemed to have a blast. The fish were mostly Catch-Photo-Release which was a good model for our junior anglers, learning responsible fishingand preservation of local fish. However, one talented junior angler caught a seventeen-inchflounder and was so excited to bring it home for dinner! And another talented junior anglercaught and released a beautiful Goliath Grouper.

Mike Crotts and John Falter cooked hamburgers and hot dogs, and the kids were awardedthe Flagler Sport Fishing Club's Master Junior Angler medal.

Those kids, parents, and captains had a wonderful and exciting day on the water. Thanks to all who participated.Roy Lawson

The 8th Annual Kids Fishing Clinic was a huge success, as were the previousones, thanks to the more than 30 Flagler Sportfishing Club volunteers.

We were able to introduce 205 new anglers ages 5 through 15, along with theirparent or guardian, to the world of salt water angling. Each new angler received anew rod and reel which was donated by Fish Florida. They also received a smalltackle box in their gift bag. A special thanks to Al La Monica and his family from Big Al’s Bait and Tackle fordonating a free hot dog, chips, and bottled water for each child.

Once again thanks to all the volunteers, many of whom were new faces thisyear and the ones who have been donating their time and energy since 2009. It ispeople like you who make the Flagler Sportfishing Club great. THANK YOU ALLwithout you this would not be possible!!!

FOURTH ANNUAL KAYAK TOURNAMENTBy Bill May

On Saturday August 19th, Flagler Sportfishing Club Members and others launched their kayaks from locations of theirchoice to fish in our fourth annual kayak tournament. We had thirty-five entrants which was a record for our kayakevent. The weather cooperated as did the fish. It was hot and muggy but there was no rain (which probably would havebeen welcome to cool things off). $525 was paid out to anglers for catching Flounder and Redfish but these folksweren’t fishing for the prizes, they were fishing because they love our sport. We also had a 50/50 drawing won by tomWhitten and a raffle for $25 for just showing up at Back Water Bait and Tackle at High Bridge for the weigh-in, whichwas packed. Thanks to John, Scott and Josh for supporting us once again. One young teen aged angler, Tyler Dalecki, fished in our tournament for the first time and was able to catch a bunch of fish but no Redfish or Flounder so he didn’twin any prize money this time but I’ll bet he’ll be back next time. It’s great to see young folks taking part in our sportbecause we need them. So keep fishing Tyler. There also were a lot of kids at the weigh-in and seemed to enjoy seeingour catches. Our raffle prizes this year were great. Our primary sponsor was KAYAKS BY BO from Titusville. Theydonated a Boozie Bucket won by Bill Moore and an Insulated Mug won by Tom Juliano this year. MANLEY RODSdonated a Platinum Rod Gift Certificate and the luck winner of that was a very lucky Tom Martins who also won thirdplace Flounder and the Flagler Bucket with heaviest Flounder and Redfish. BOATERS EXCHANGE donated two $50gift certificates and both were won by Bob Cyr!! BIG BOYS PLAY TOYS donated a $50 gift certificate as well andWayne Elliot Sr. was the lucky winner. Obviously all the winners were very happy with these prizes and we cannotthank all our sponsors enough for supporting our club. Thanks to all our members that helped set things up and makethis event even better than last year—Rita, Walt, Gary, Mike, Dean, Ellen, Carol, Jeff, Jeannie, and anyone else I mayhave missed. See you next year and hopefully, we can have two kayak tournaments instead of one. If you think two is agood idea, let me know. Questions?? Or suggestions. Call Bill May, (386) 864-1555.

The schedule for thespeakers is published in your August Chumline, please refer to it. There are flyers and a sign upsheet at the back table.BreakGuest Speaker: Charles (Redfish Chuck) Levi istonight’s speaker, he hosts a kayak radio fishingshow. He will be talking about how to catch

flounder and redfish to help us in the upcomingKayak Tournament. Flounder: He said there arethree kinds of flounder fisherman, giggers, baitfishermen, & artificial bait users. He uses bait andartificial. When using artificial bait, he looks forsmall flounder. Flounders have excellent eyesightand will come up to get bait. Use short leaders, 50pound mono, they are not leader shy and will followbait and eat anything. He uses an 8-10 inch mullet. You need to wait longer for the big ones, when youfeel a bump, WAIT and say your A,B,C’s, grab themullet across the belly, if you lose the flounder, fishthat same spot and he will come back for the bait.Chuck has a pier net hooked to the side of his kayak, because you don’t want to lose a big flounder to asmall net. Use a mullet and then put a strip of squidon the hook to hold the mullet on it. Move your baitaround, don’t wait for the fish. Redfish: Chuck saidsigns that redfish are around is that shrimp go awayfrom them and in shallow water, when feeding, youcan see their tails sticking up. He doesn’t use liveshrimp for bait because everything eats it. He willuse a DOA shrimp, cut off the tail and run a 1 or 1.0circle hook through where the tail was, pop it, itkicks back and the red will grab it. Throw 15 or 20feet past the red and bring your bait to it. The onlycolor plastic he uses for reds is Slayer Inc,out of Jax,bait that is red on top and has a grey belly. Don’tuse a small piece of bait for reds, use a full lady fishhead. Redfish run in a straight line, so you and yourbuddy can ping pong off of each other. When yousee the push coming to you, let one guy be at the endof the push and they will go in your buddy’sdirection. Giant trout also hang out with redfish.Top water plugs are good to use too. He said toenjoy not having to think about anything else butfishing.50/50 Winner: Prize of $135.00 was won by newmember, Ernie MorrisMeeting adjourned at 9:40 PM
