There are beagles andretrievers, rescue dogsand fox hounds, coondogs and dock dogs. Thisyear the Southern IllinoisCelebration of NationalHunting and FishingDays has added stillanother canine feature —agility dog training.

The new feature will beunveiled at the 22ndannual event. The John A.Logan College campus inCarterville will betransformed into anoutdoor playgroundSaturday and Sunday. The event opens at 9 a.m.both days. It closes at 5p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m.Sunday.

“For years I’ve wantedto get agility dogs,” saidDwight Hoffard, one ofthe event’s coordinators.“It’s totally new. We’venever done this before.”

Carol Ely, of DeSotowho teaches dog trainingat the college, willpresent a couple ofdemonstrations each dayduring the event. Hoffardsaid he hopes the newattraction grows into afull-blown competitionin the next few years.

“We have just aboutevery kind of dog you canthink of,” Hoffard said.

“We are getting prettydoggy. People really enjoythe dog demonstrations.”

In addition to theagility dogs, there will beenhanced dock dogcompetition this year, aswell as the usual retrieverand coon dog events.

Most visitors to theSouthern IllinoisCelebration of NationalHunting and FishingDays also seem to enjoy agood grizzly bearsighting. To that end,Brody the Bear isreturning this year.

“Brody will be back thisyear,” Hoffard said. “I’vehad about 500 people askme. He was supposed tobe here last year, butthere was a mix-up withdates. You learn howpopular things are whenthey aren’t here.”

Much of the rest of theevent is similar toprevious years, but thatdoesn’t seem to be aproblem. The outdoorsextravaganza attractsmore than 20,000 peopleannually.

There will be the usualareas dedicated to kids, places where kids canlearn to shoot a bow andarrow or BB gun, or try tocatch a fish. As always, there is no admissioncharge and parking isfree.

In addition, to theusual fare of sunfish andfiddler-sized catfish, four large flatheads havebeen stocked into theJohn A. Logan fishingpond this year.

“The first kid to catchone of the big catfishwith tackle and baitprovided will win a newbicycle,” Hoffard said.“We have a 50-poundflathead catfish. If youcatch Whitlock, you get a$100 gift certificate toCooksey’s Bait Shop andCrappie Pro Shop.”

Catfish will also takecenter stage, literally andfiguratively at 10 a.m.Saturday during theannual catfish contest.Two-man teams vie for a$200 prize.

“That’s always a bigattraction,” Hoffard said.“Anglers can catch themanywhere and bring themto campus. It has to be acatfish species, andcaught in legal waters bylegal methods.”

The Southern IllinoisBuckmaster’s group isalso returning this year to

measure mounts andsheds. There is no chargefor the service.

The group will beaccepting mounts andsheds in the gymnasiumfrom 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Saturday. Mounts will beaccepted from 9 a.m. tonoon on Saturday.

Smiles are the order of the day at NHFDFun.That’s

the firstword thatcomes tomindwhen Ithink ofthe timeI’ve spentat theSouthernIllinoisCele-

bration of NationalHunting and FishingDays.

It’s really not any morecomplicated than that.

There have been somememorable belly laughs.

Anyone who attendedthe benefactor’s banquetsthat featured FishFishburne, Justin Wilson

and Mike Snider knowwhat I mean.

The year FishFishburne spoke may bethe most memorable ofall. He returned to JohnA. Logan College thefollowing morning for a“Breakfast With Fish”promotion. The auxiliarygym was packed andFishburne was at hiscomedic best minglingwith kids.

After entertaining theyoungsters with hisantics and getting themsugared up ondoughnuts, Fishburne leda mad charge to thefishing pond on the JohnA. Logan campus. IllinoisDepartment of NaturalResources personnelwaiting for the kids said

the wave of kids comingover the hill looked like acharge of TeddyRoosevelt and the RoughRiders.

And, for sheerheartwarmingentertainment, you don’thave to wander far fromthe fishing area.

For nearly 20 yearsmembers of the Sesser-Valier Outdoorsman’sClub have served asvolunteers at the fishingarea. These high schoolkids bait hooks, help castand assist youngsters inreleasing any fish theymight catch – and theyusually catch tons.

There is somethingspecial about watching ateenager selflessly help ayounger kid. It makes a

body feel good to witnesscare, compassion andpatience at work.

And, of course, there isnothing like seeing thewide-eyed excitement ofa youngster catchinghis/her first fish.

But, there is plentymore.

I’ve marveled at thespectacle of fox hunters.I’ve watched enviously asmembers of the SouthernIllinois Hunting RetrieverClub put their marvelousanimals through theirpaces.

Then, there are thesmells.

If you arrive at the JohnA. Logan campus early inthe morning, before theevent gets geared up,you’ll be treated to the

smell of burningcampfires. Theintoxicating aroma ofbreakfast cooking over anopen fire comes waftingacross campus from thebuckskinner’sencampment.

Just thinking about itmakes my mouth water.

As the day wears on thesmell of breakfast isobscured by the equallypleasing aromas ofcinnamon-roasted nutsand kettle korn.

Finally, there are thesounds.

There are squeals ofdelight coming from kidslearning to shoot a bowand arrow or a BB gun.Laughter seems toabound in every corner ofthe campus. But, the

signature sound duck andgoose calls. You cannotwalk anywhere on thatcampus for two dayswithout hearing someonetooting on a duck orgoose call.

I swear if you return toJohn A. Logan two weeksafter the event, you couldstill hear the echo of agoose call.

The fun starts again at9 a.m. Saturday.

As always, the event isfree. That makes it morefun.

Dock dogs return by popular demand

Dock dogs made theirinitial appearance at theSouthern IllinoisCelebration of NationalHunting and Fishing Dayslast year and made quite a,ahem, splash. TheHeartland Dock Dogs willmake a return visitSaturday and Sunday atJohn A. Logan College’sannual celebration of thegreat outdoors.

“Last year was our firsttime being at NationalHunting and FishingDays,” said Andrew Ziebaof Heartland Dock Dogs.“I would say we wereprobably one of the

biggest draws. Theybrought out three sets ofbleachers, and they werefull each time with peoplestanding around.

“People are just drawnto see what these dogscan do.”

The Heartland DockDogs will present bothexhibitions andcompetitions throughoutthe weekend.

Quasi, the defendingnational champion, willbe on hand through theweekend to presentexhibitions.

The competition isopen to local contestants.Dogs will compete in fivedivisions, from novice toelite. Registration is $25

on site.“They’ll need to bring a

leash and their dog’sfavorite toy, as long as it isnot edible, it floats andit’s not alive,” Zieba said.“We’d also like to stress,no dogs in heat.”

Saturday will featurebig air competition at 10a.m., noon and 2 p.m.

“That’s where a dogruns off a dock and ismeasured for distance itjumps,” Zieba said.

The extreme verticalcompetition will be heldat 4 p.m.

“A dog sits at the 20-foot mark on the dock andruns down the dock andjumps for height,” Ziebasaid. “We measure the

height of the jump. We’vegot a mechanical arm atthe end of the dock thatraises up an inch everyround.”

Speed retrievecompetition will be heldat noon Sunday with thefinals scheduled for 2:30p.m.

“It’s a timed retrieve,”

Zieba said. “They jumpoff the dock and swim tothe opposite end of thepool. There is a deadwaterfowl trainer, basically a waterfowldecoy, on the other end. They just have to grab it.When they pull it loose, that is when the time isstopped.”

For more informationon the event, go towww.dockdogs.com orcall 618-924-0094.Anyone interested injoining the club can e-mail [email protected].

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL HUNTING AND FISHING DAYS

Page 4: Hunting & Fishing Days

The Southern IllinoisCelebration of NationalHunting and FishingDays, which will be heldSept 26-27 atCarterville’s John A.Logan College, allowskids the opportunity toshoot a gun, catch a fish, watch retrievers workand hear some of the bestwaterfowl calling in theworld.

However, it is also anevent for adults. Vendorsremain an important partof the annual celebration.

National Hunting andFishing Days allowsadults the opportunity toshop, or at least window

shop, for those muchneeded hunting andfishing items. The lateSeptember date alsoallows sportsman achance to get a head starton Christmas shopping.

“I probably have morenew vendors than I’vehad in any single show inthe past 10 years,” saidRon Allen, one of theevent’s organizers. Wehave more vendors thanwe had last year. Mywaterfowl tent, I had toturn away two callvendors.”

Allen said the event willbe laid out in the samefashion as last year. Therewill be two main vendortents and separate tentsfor waterfowl calls and

archery.“Dick’s Sporting Goods

is back with our archerytent,” Allen said. “Onceagain, bring your bow inand they’ll tune it for us.We’ll have a 10-, 15- and20-yard range for you. And, we’ve picked up anumber of new deerhunting vendors.

“I kept the layout thesame as it was last year. One thing they’ll see ismore vendors in theparking lot this year. Itwill be a lot fuller aroundthe tents. I have a coupleof new people who aregoing to bring cabins. The Army NationalGuard is coming out withits unit.”

Although the show is in

its 22nd year, it hasn’tseemed to have lost anypopularity with vendors.

“I think the fact thatwe’ve been here 22 years,we’ve got a greatreputation,” Allen said.“We haven’t raised ourrates in the past 10 years.Most important, we’vealways got 25,000-30,000 people here.That’s what they’relooking for.”

Allen said the eventshould attract its600,000th visitor thisyear.

Although some majormanufacturers will berepresented, many of thevendors represent smallcompanies.

“They’re mostly mom

and pop type vendors, which I love,” Allen said.

He noted thewaterfowl tent willinclude 15 duck andgoose callmanufacturers, as wellas several clothingvendors. In addition, lots of sportsman’s clubswill be represented.

Finally, Allen said thedog tent is beingexpanded this year toinclude Chesepeakeretrievers.

“The most importantthing is it is absolutelyfree and free parking,” hesaid. “Everybody lovesthat.”
