TIME FORSOME ONOUR AMAZING EARTHby Sarah Bates
Welive on a pretty amazing planet. There are 195countries, nearly 7,000languages and 6.7 bil-
lion people - and if that’s notamazing enough, here aresome more Tidbits:• Did you know that Earthis 4.5 billion years old?Geologists believe that forthe first two billion yearsEarth supported no lifewhatsoever. They also spec-ulate that for some time Earthwas mostly in a molten state. This is why some of Earth’s oldestrock formations are only about 4 billion years old.• There are more than 50,000 earthquakes around the worldeach year. Did you know that an earthquake in 1811 causedparts of the Mississippi River to flow backwards?• About 40,000 tons of extraterrestrial matter from spacerain down on Earth each year. If you ever hear someonetalking about space dust, this is what they mean!• The Earth isn’t flat, but it’s not exactly round, either. Earthis known as an “oblate spheroid” because it is flattened atthe poles and bulging at the equator.• Only 3% of Earth’s water is drinkable. 2% of that 3% islocated in glaciers and ice sheets around Earth’s poles. Theother 97% of Earth’s water is saltwater. Continue on Pg. 2

Low-Cost NetbooksHave SomeDrawbacks
The netbook craze has swung into highgear as more and more people totethese small, inexpensive deviceseverywhere they go. Designed for Webbrowsing and e-mailing, netbooks havea lot to recommend them, but they'renot miniature laptops. Before you buy, consider the pros and cons.
Pro:
• Relatively inexpensive -- There are afew now at the $300 to $400 mark, withmost not going over $500.
• Easy to carry -- Netbooks arelightweight, which is helpful if you travelfrequently. Most netbooks are in the 2-3pound range.
• Good for the basics -- If yourcomputer usage is limited to checkinge-mail and surfing the Internet, anetbook is something to consider.
Con:
• Small screen -- Netbooks come in twogeneral screen sizes, 8.9 inches and10.1 inches. No matter which youchoose, they're still small. If you spendmore than an hour reading online, you'llwant the larger of the two sizes.
• Small typing pad -- If you're goingfrom a full-size computer keyboard to anetbook, check the feel of a number ofnetbooks and decide if you can easily
$&¢ Dollars and SenseBY David Uffington
make the switch. If you do a lot ofwriting, extended use of the small padcould be a problem.
• No DVD player -- If you have belovedsoftware on CD, how is it going to beinstalled on a netbook? If it's paid-forsoftware, many companies havedownloads available from their sites. Notall products, however, are available thisway.
• Battery life -- This is a big issue, onewhere some of the netbookmanufacturers have fallen short. "Cell"size seems to be the current form ofadvertising how long a battery will last, but don't be fooled. A "six-cell" batterycould be 4,400 milliampere-hour, or itcould be 5,200 or 5,900 mAH, a bigdifference in how long the battery willwork.
Additionally, no one can accuratelypredict just how long a battery will lastwithout knowing the specifics of how thenetbook will be used. Beware getting amachine with a short run-time batteryand expect to upgrade it later. Thatupgraded battery could cost nearly 40percent of the cost of the netbook.
Best bet: Check online reviews by actualusers before you buy. That will tell youmore, in most cases, than all the slickadvertising.
David Uffington regrets that he cannot personallyanswer reader questions, but will incorporate theminto his column whenever possible.Write to him incare of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail [email protected].

• The Earth travels 585,331,663 mi (942 million km) on its orbit around the sun. That’s over1,603,648 mi (2,580,821 km) per day - that’s over 100 times the earth’s circumference!• There are billions of stars in the universe, but there are only about 3,000 stars visible to thenaked eye from Earth’s surface.• Did you know that fog and clouds are really just the same thing but at different altitudes?• Even though you can’t put Earth on a scale, scientists have speculated about both Earth’sweight and mass. Some people will quickly remind you that Earth is technically weightless,as it is floating in outer space. Gravity effects weight and because there is no gravity inspace, Earth is technically one skinny Minnie. The more accurate question to ask would be:What is Earth’s mass? Earth has a mass of about 5.9 sextillion tons... that’s twenty-onezeroes!• The plant life in the world’s oceans makes up 85% of all the flora on the planet.• The highest temperature ever recorded on the planet was 135.8º F (57.7º C). It wasrecorded in Al Aziziyah, Libya on September 13, 1922. You’re probably wondering aboutthe record low. That goes to Vostok, Antarctica on July 21, 1983. The Russian researchstation recorded -128.5º F (-89.2º C).• About 500 meteorites strike the Earth each year. Don’t worry about getting hit, though. The

Laws Force Children toSupport Parents
Thirty states have laws that require adultchildren to take care of their parents.Whilethe specifics vary by state, the chilling fact
is that the courts can go after adult children toforce them totake financialresponsibility fortheir seniorparents. Thetarget in mostcases seems tobe the cost offood, shelter, clothing andanything elsedeemednecessary --including payinglong-term careandnursing-homebills.
The list of thosethat can sue adult children is long: state publicagencies such as welfare, the county, the town, creditors, doctors and even the seniorsthemselves.
While on the surface it appears that these kindsof lawsuits are rare, every day now more andmore people are opening their mail to discoverthey're being sued for the cost of a parent'ssupport.
Here's a sample of some state laws:
--In some states it doesn't matter if the parentwas abusive or vanished for a good part of thechild's life, or that the child and parent haven'thad contact in 20 or 30 years.
--A child who refuses to support a parent can bearrested for on a criminal charge and can go tojail for a year.
--One law has a "family tree" listing relatives inorder who can be required to provide support, and it includes grandchildren.
--One state in particular seems to go after adultchildren with a vengeance. Fifty nursing homeshave sued, threatening to file liens on homes.
This is a wakeup call to get our affairs in order. Ifwe're going to pass assets to our children ormake provisions, perhaps we'd better do itsooner than later. If you want to consult yourattorney to learn the laws in your state and howthey apply to you, the operative phrase is "filialresponsibility."***

odds are extremely low. Only one woman has been hit by a meteorite in recent history, and thatwas Sylacauga, Alabama woman Ann Hodges, who was hit by a nine pound(four kilogram) meteorite back in 1954.• On the subject of things entering our atmosphere, let’s talk about things exiting. Did youknow that an object has to travel seven miles per second to escape Earth’s gravitational pull?• The Earth is travelling over 67,000 mph (107,826 km/h) through space! On the subject ofspeed, it takes moonlight 1.25 seconds to reach the Earth. It takes sunlight eight minutes totravel from the sun to the Earth.• Earth actually takes 23 hours 56 minutes 4 seconds to rotate - which means a year isn’t 365days, it’s actually 365.2564 days. The extra .2564 days add up every four years to give usFebruary 29th.• The Earth’s core is about 7000º F (3870º C). But, did you know that only the outer part of thecore is molten? Scientists believe the inside of the Earth’s core is solid, but since we’ve neverbeen, no one really knows for sure!• If you lived on the moon you would see the Earth go through phases just as our moon does. What a view!• The air around forming lightning bolts becomes super heated and is five times hotter than thesun!• If you dug a hole to the other side of the Earth, you wouldn’t end up in China. You’d actuallycome out somewhere in the Indian Ocean, but you wouldn’t stop there. As you fell through thehole you’d accelerate until you got to the Earth’s core, where you’d decelerate until you cameout to the other side. Gravity would then pull you back in and send you through the hole on anever ending journey. It’s much like being in orbit and it takes about the same amount of time. You’d stay in that continual path in your tunnel through the Earth until something knocked youout of orbit.• Sunset is usually redder than sunrise because the atmosphere tends to be dustier at that timeof day.• Earth is the fifth largest and the densest major body in our solar system.• While Earth only has one natural moon, there are other bodies in our solar system that orbitclosely to Earth. One such body is an asteroid called Cruithne. It was discovered in 1986 byDuncan Waldron. Cruithne orbits the sun just as the Earth does, but their orbits are so similarthat their paths appear to follow each other. Don’t worry, they are far enough apart that there isno danger of collision.• To get technical about it, Mt. Everest isn’t the tallest mountain on Earth but it is the furthestabove sea level. Mt. Everest is 29,029 ft (8,850 m) above sea level. Mauna Kea in Hawaii is33,474 ft (10,203 m) tall, but only 3,3476 ft (4,205 m) above sea level.• Natural gas was used in 900 B.C. by the Chinese to evaporate salt water to produce salt. Thefirst natural gas pipeline was built in Rochester, New York in 1872. This naturally odorless gasis given a rotten egg smell so it is more easily detectable in a leak.• Did you know that glaciers appear blue in color because ice absorbs all other colors and onlyreflects blue? If all the world’s glaciers melted, the sea level would rise by 230 ft (70 m).• On June 8, 1783 the Icelandic volcanic fissure Laki began erupting, spewing lava and sulfuricdust and over 120 million tons of sulfuric dioxide. The spewing of dust lasted eight months andcovered Europe in a dark haze known as the Laki Haze, which lasted until September. Iteffected the winter of 1784 in both Europe and North America, making it one of the mostsevere on record - from the most snow ever accumulated in New Jersey to part of theMississippi River at New Orleans froze over.• If all the world’s newspapers were recycled after being read, it would save 250,000,000 treesa year. Remember to recycle your Tidbits or share with a friend!

Brian VickersLooks for Cup Victory
BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Brian Vickers, who made aswitch to Toyota when the Japanese manufacturerentered the Sprint Cup Series in 2007, has yet to win arace, but feels the progress of Team Red Bull isevidenced by his success in qualifying.
Vickers, 25, won his third pole of the season atMichigan International Speedway, though he woundup finishing ninth in the LifeLock 400.
"It always feels good to be the fastest driver in thisseries on any given day," he said. "It's a challenge, tosay the least. This is the most competitive racing seriesin the world, definitely here in the U.S.
"Sitting on the pole is no easy accomplishment. ... (Theteam) gave me a great car."
Vickers, who is from Thomasville, N.C., has won eight
poles in his career and won a race at Talladega, Ala., inOctober 2006. At the time of his lone victory, he wasat Hendrick Motorsports. Vickers has remained patientat Team Red Bull, a new entry at the time he signedup, as its performance has gradually improved.
"I think we're making gains," said Vickers."We've been making gains all year. We've been making gains sincethis team was founded. Thereare times when we've madehuge gains and timeswhen the gains havebeen slow. There havebeen times when we'vetaken a few steps back, but for the most partwe've always taken moresteps forward.
"We've come so far in such ashort amount of years, andhopefully, we can keep going."
Vickers offered a staunchdefense of Toyota's rightful placein NASCAR.
"Personally, I didn't grow up in the Detroit generation,"he said. "I grew up in a national and internationalgeneration. To me, I see multi-national conglomeratesthat do business all around the world, and it's verydifficult to distinguish where their headquarters reallyis. Probably the only person (who) can distinguish
where any company's headquarters is these daysis whoever is collecting taxes. I can assureyou that Uncle Sam knows where(Toyota's) headquarters is.
"Toyota, in a lot of eyes and to mewith what I've learned about them, they are as much of an Americancar company as anyone. They havebeen over the years, and theToyota Camry is the only car in thesport right now that's built in theU.S."
