President Foreword

Welcome to the 2013-14 Season. Last year will go down as one of the best ever in Royston's 50-year history, certainly the best in the League-era. The 1st XV were runners up in Herts/Middlesex II, only deprived of the League title by the fact that we had been docked 5 points at the start of the season for failing to fulfil our last fixture of the previous year. They also won the Herts President's Trophy, runners-up in the county merit table for league results and winners of the Jimmy Little Trophy for best points ratio in the County (Points for divided by points against - ours was 7.90, the next best was 4.89). We have yet to receive the Trophy as last year's winners were The Mount, a category C prison, who play no away games and may well have melted down the trophy by now! The u15 XV matched the 1st XV in all except the points scored, finishing runners up in their Herts /Middlesex league and winning the County Cup competition at that level with a comprehensive victory over Old Albanians. The 2nd XV and u14 XV both had good seasons, finishing respectably in mid-table. The u14s and u15s both went on tour and thoroughly enjoyed the end-of-season ritual. Meanwhile, in the Minis, the u12s won the Barkers Butts Trophy in Coventry and geared up for a new season of League rugby as u13s. The u7s, having embraced the new 4-a-side format of the game, went to the non-competitive Hertfordshire Tag festival and won the only trophy on offer, the Spirit of Rugby, for the outstanding behaviour of players, parents and coaches, a tribute to Coach of the Year Jamie Green, Fergus McAuliffe and the other helpers. There were plenty of other outstanding performances by Royston teams, which bodes well for the future. The benefit of starting Mini Rugby back in 1991, is certainly paying dividends as, by the end of the season, eleven of the 1st XV squad had come up through the ranks, not to mention the 1st XV coach, Rob Turner, whose achievements were recognised by the County as one of the Club's Volunteers of the Year. The other award winner was Angela Winter, the Club Volunteer Organiser, who has helped create a network of parents and friends that keeps the Club going. Chairman, Colin Letch, has combined his committee duties with coaching the u14s, playing for both senior teams and captaining the winning team in the Club Summer Touch Tournament. We reluctantly say goodbye to Tiff Letch, who has fulfilled the role of Secretary for the last two seasons despite the lure of the Netball Team, for whom she will be Secretary next season. We welcome Sara Sirett as the new Secretary, who obviously decided that with a son playing for the 1st XV and a husband watching, if she cannot beat them, join them! Finally, Congratulations to Scott Easy for captaining such a successful team, for the second time, and good luck to Damien Fouracres who takes over the position next season. Let us carry on next season as we did the last, playing excellent rugby with plenty of skill and enthusiasm and in the right spirit. Jamie

Important Information

Subscriptions Mini and junior subscription for this season will be £45 for all age groups and £30 per child thereafter for the year. Over an

8 month period this works out at £1.25 per week which helps the club provide 2 hrs training, after-match teas, qualified

coaching, the new changing rooms, pitches, equipment, festivals and awards. Please arrange to pay on Sunday mornings or

contact Daf Hudd (07881466223) to renew or register.

Senior subscription for the 2011/2012 season will be £70 with a £10 discount applied if paid before 1st October 2011.

Match fees will stay at £7 per game, £3.50 for student or employed. Please bring cash or cheque to training or contact

Jason Turks (07739401341) if you wish to play for the senior sides this season, no pay, no play.

Senior Training and Selection

Training sessions are at the Club beginning at 7.00 p.m. Tuesday evenings. Make the effort; it is worthwhile for the

enjoyment of your game and also to the success of the club on the pitch on Saturdays. We have a new senior coach in

Robert Turner who is bringing a fresh new approach to training and is organising, alongside the committee, a structured

training plan for the senior sides.

If you are unable to play, or doubtful, please let your team captain know as soon as possible. This helps prevent problems

in assembling teams later in the week. You all swear about the late cry-offs – try not to be one. If you are available but not

selected, let a team captain know and turn up on Saturday at the earliest meet time with your kit. You may well get a

game, even if only as a substitute.

Turn up on time – you need to be well prepared to play effectively. If the weather is poor DO NOT ASSUME games are

cancelled as the venue may be changed or an alternative fixture arranged at short notice.

If you have not been informed of your selection by Thursday contact any team captain or look on the Club website:

www.roystonrugbyclub.co.uk. The new website is a great tool to update everyone of club news, fixtures & results and

upcoming events. Please sign up today and keep in touch, we can start to provide team sheets and selection emails every

week, you can upload photos or browse through others and as a club we can notify you of important information.

Youth and Mini Rugby

This is the future. The Youth and Mini sections train from 10.30 to 12.00 on a Sunday morning. All coaches require CRB

vetting (a straightforward form to complete and proof of identity), but occasional helpers are also welcome. If you have

never been to the Club on a Sunday morning and seen how many youngsters take part in training, you would be

astonished; we have over 150 children registered from age 6 to 18.

For those already taking part, remember we are always recruiting new players and volunteers. If you know someone who

would like to play, of any age or ability, provide first aid or even run raffles or help in anyway please get in touch. The club

relies on volunteers and through the effort of everyone who supports the club, it has become one of the largest

community groups in Royston.

Mid-week junior training is now taking place; the U15s are training on Wednesday evening at 6pm and the U16s on

Thursday evening, also at 6pm. Current turn-outs are great and the extra skills learnt and time spent together will, no

doubt, make the upcoming season more enjoyable and successful.

Please also familiarise yourself with the club’s new website, www.roystonrugbyclub.co.uk. It’s a great tool to update

players, parents and supporters of our club with the latest news, fixtures & results for all ages, photos and upcoming

events. Please upload all the photo’s you have and share them with other parents and players. Sign up today and keep in

touch, we will inform all of important club news and information through the site

activities to ensure that all members, regardless of age, can enjoy rugby and club activities safely and

enjoyably.

We achieved Seal of Approval status in summer 2007 and take our responsibilities seriously. Please see

coaches and club officials are CRB checked. However, ALL club members have a responsibility to familiarise

themselves with basic safety and first aid procedures including the location of the nearest phone to call for

medical assistance and the post code of the club to provide paramedics with accurate location information for

a speedy response. The postcode of the club is SG8 5BG.

Child Protection Policy

At Royston Rugby Club we believe that taking part in our sport should be a positive and enjoyable part of

children’s lives. We want to make sure that children are protected and kept safe from physical, sexual and

emotional harm while they are with the Club’s coaches, helpers and other volunteers.

To do this we have these aims:

1. All coaches will go on a START Coaching Rugby Union Course before they begin working with

children.

2. All coaches and other volunteers will have a job description.

3. There will be women coaches as well as men.

4. All coaches will be qualified to Preliminary Award level before they are allowed to be the Head Coach

of an age group.

5. The Club will encourage and help coaches stay up-to-date with rugby, coaching and child protection

issues. Each lead Coach will attend an NCF Coach Protection Workshop.

6. All coaches will be given a copy of the Club’s Code of Conduct for Coaches and be expected to keep to

it at all times.

7. We will keep written records of attendance, parental consent and accidents.

8. We will provide a written Health and Safety policy covering fire procedures, telephone access and first

aid and emergency procedures.

9. We will provide coaches and parents with a written procedure for dealing with accusations or

suspicions of child abuse.

10. As a club, we will promote ‘fair play’ and always play within the spirit of the laws and the letter of the

continuum.

11. We will identify a person whose role it is to deal with any concerns about physical, sexual or

emotional abuse within the club.
