Untapable is the top offspring of two-time

leading sire and Gainesway resident Tapit, whom

    Winchell Thoroughbreds campaigned to victory

in the 2004 Wood Memorial (gr. I). The Winchells

retain an interest in the son of Pulpit.

In her standout year of 2014 as a 3-year-old,

Untapable captured six of seven outings, includ-

ing four grade I events: the Longines Breeders'

Cup Distaff, Longines Kentucky Oaks, Cotillon, and

Mother Goose as well as the Fair Grounds Oaks

(gr. II) and Rachel Alexandra (gr. III) while bank-

rolling $2,808,600. The only blemish on her record

that season was a fifth to Bayern against males

for the first time in the Haskell Invitational (gr. I).

She was unanimously voted the Eclipse Award

    as champion of her division.

Untapable won eight stakes overall, including

the 2015 Apple Blossom, marking a fifth grade

I victory. Still competitive thereafter, she never-

theless went winless in six subsequent starts,

although she placed second or third in five stakes,

including seconds in three grade I races last year:

the Ogden Phipps, Personal Ensign, and Juddmon-

te Spinster, the latter by only a neck.

This year, the now 5-year-old mare's only on-

the-board score was a runner-up finish in the

Azeri (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park in her season debut

    March 19.

Her stellar career ends after a fourth-place

finish as the 120-pound highweight and 3-5 fa-

vorite in the Fleur de Lis Handicap (gr. III) June 18

    at Churchill Downs.

Untapable, a half sister to grade I winner Pad-

dy O'Prado, has a 2-year-old full sister named

Untapped, a yearling full sister, and a full brother

    foaled April 26. BH

DONEGAL MOON SCORES GRADED VICTORYBy Tom LaMarra

Donegal Racing's Donegal Moon, fourth in the LARC Sir Barton Stakes in his last start, broke through for his first graded stakes victory in the

$100,000 Betfair.com Pegasus Stakes (gr. III) for

3-year-olds June 19 at Monmouth Park.

Ridden by Joe Bravo for trainer Todd Pletcher,

Donegal Moon was reserved early, split horses in the

stretch, and pulled away to win by 1 1/4 lengths over

Extinct Charm, who finished a neck in front of Awe-

some Slew. Heavily favored Unified, undefeated in

three starts with wins in the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II)

and Bay Shore Stakes (gr. III), came under a ride from

Jose Ortiz on the far turn of the 1 1/16-mile Pegasus

but failed to hit the board.

Donegal Moon won for the third time in 11 starts.

He broke his maiden at Keeneland last fall, and in

early March easily won a first-level allowance test at

Parx Racing; after that race he finished eighth in the

Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland.

The pace in the Pegasus was set by Parx allowance

winner Saratoga Jack, who set fractions of :23.70 for

    the opening quarter-mile, :47.63 for a half-mile, and

1:11.78 for six furlongs with Abiding Star in close

    pursuit.

Awesome Slew had a short lead in the lane but

Donegal Moon took over before one mile in 1:37.61

and fought off the late rally of Extinct Charm, the

winner of a New York-bred stakes who was claimed

for $80,000 at Belmont Park in May. Donegal Moon

finished up in 1:44.15 on a track rated fast.

The colt by Malibu Moon out of the Giant's Cause-

way mare Perfect Cause was bred in Kentucky by

Patchen Wilkes Farm and was a $220,000 purchase at

the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale.

"It's so fun to ride for Team Pletcher," Bravo said.

"Todd texted me earlier and the instructions worked

out perfectly. There was so much early speed in the

race and the race set up great for us. In the stretch,

he really came running strongly. This was a fun two

    days."

Ortiz and Jimmy Jerkens, who trains Unified for

Centennial Farms, had no immediate excuses for the

Candy Ride colt's effort. It was his first start around

two turns, although the Peter Pan was 1 1/8 miles but

    around one turn at Belmont.

"He broke really well from the gate and he was

going good for the first half mile," Ortiz said. "I asked

him to go around the three-eighths pole and just

    didn't have it today."

"He seemed like he was in a good position and

backed up around the three-eighths pole," Jerkens

    said.

    SALES UPDATE

HINES EMERGES AS LEADING BUYER AT OBSBy Ron Mitchell

Nick “Sarge” Hines wears many hats within the Thoroughbred industry, not the least of which is as one of TVG’s most popular on-air personalities,

and at the June 14-17 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s

2-year-olds in training sale, Hines emerged as the

    auction’s leading buyer by gross.

He purchased nine horses for $878,000, a

    $97,556 average and a $65,000 median.

Hines’ top purchase was a $370,000 Candy Ride

grandson of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) win-

ner Cash Run. The colt previously sold for $185,000

to Brad Grady's Grand Oaks when Taylor Made

Sales Agency offered him at last year's Keeneland

    September yearling sale.

After the OBS auctioneer gave Sarge a salute

following his successful purchase, Hines noted he

had been prepared to pay more for the colt but

was glad there hadn’t been much competition.

“There are various people that felt it was too

much to come out for this sale—because it’s hot,

it’s the end of the sales season—but as they say

in the horse business, ‘Money never sleeps and

nervous money never wins,’ ” he said. “We were

    prepared to go further.”

Being able to buy horses below market prices

was somewhat bittersweet for Hines, who heads

a pinhooking partnership group also selling at

OBS June through agent Matt Bowling. Although

his group’s offerings sold well, Hines said most

pinhookers were taking a bit of a hit.

“At this sale, the pinhookers would be kissing

the skies if they had an experience like you have

when you go to Las Vegas. You go to Vegas and

you have a good enough time; you hope to break

even. I would say the biggest percentage (of

pinhookers) are taking a big hit, at least a 30-60%

    loss.”

Also appreciating the buyers’ market was

    agent Christina R. Jelm, the sale's third-leading

buyer who signed for 11 totaling $632,000, an

average of $57,455 and a median of $20,000.

Accompanied to the sale by Hall of Fame trainer

Jack Van Berg and trainer Mike Puhich, Jelm bought

for several clients, including newcomer Mike Waters,

who has been in the business for some three years.

Jelm’s top purchase was $375,000 for, a Distort-

ed Humor half brother to 2010 Kentucky Derby

Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Super

Saver consigned by agent Eddie Woods.

“Obviously, when you buy a horse like that,

you’re shooting for the moon," Puhich said. "We

think we got a bargain on him.”

The sale's second-leading buyer was Frank Fletch-

er Racing Operations, which through agent Donato

Lanni bought the $800,000 sale-topper, a City Zip

colt consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds. BH

EARLY MORNING WORKS: BEHOLDER, STELLAR WINDBy Jeremy Balan

Richard Mandella looked down at his stopwatch June 19 at Santa An-ita Park and all he could do was shake

    his head.

    Wanting an easy half-mile breeze

    from Spendthrift Farm's Beholder in

her first timed work since a victory

in the Vanity Mile (gr. I), the final two

clicks on his timer showed :35 and

change for three furlongs and :47 and

    change for the half.

"It looked like :49 to me," Mandel-

la said. "It looked like nothing. She's

    pretty amazing."

Santa Anita clockers timed the three-time cham-

pion and 10-time grade I winner in :48 3/5 for the

half-mile, which was actually a gallop-out time past

the wire. The clockers had Beholder hitting the wire

    in :35 3/5.

With temperatures expected to reach the triple

digits in the afternoon, many trainers sided with

working early rather than risking warmer tempera-

    tures later in the morning.

"I'm just a little concerned about the heat when

she ran and the heat coming right now," Mandella

said. "I've got plenty of time until (the grade I Clement

    L. Hirsch July 30 at Del Mar), so I'm not pressing too

hard. She doesn't need it. She's had two races. She's

    ready to go."

Vanity runner-up and fellow champion Stellar

Wind also recorded a half-mile breeze as trainer

John Sadler watched intently from the Santa Anita

grandstand. He timed the Curlin filly in :48 and track

clockers recorded her trip in :47 4/5.

"We were happy with her first race. Victor (Espi-

noza) was happy. All things considered, the race was

ridiculous," Sadler said of the opening half-mile in the

Vanity, which featured fractions of :25.03 and :49.31.

"What's the point of having sprinters in the race if

they take a hold of them like that?

"The only thing we have to decide is where we're

going to go next," he said. "I know we'll look at the

calendar at everything that's out there, but we'll real-

ly decide after her second work next weekend."

Los Pollos Hermanos Racing and Jay Em Ess Sta-

ble's Masochistic, continued his work toward the Bing

Crosby (gr. I) July 31 at Del Mar with an easy five fur-

longs from the gate in 1:01 flat. "We've still got a ways

to go," trainer Ron Ellis said. "We put Mike Smith on

    him for a half-mile (work June 5) and he went :45 4/5

just the same way. He's a really, really good work

horse. The thing with him is just getting him to slow

    down."

Trainer Gary Sherlock reported Preakness (gr. I)

pacesetter Uncle Lino is dealing with the soft-tissue

leg injury he sustained in the May 21 race at Pimlico

Race Course. Although long-term plans for the Uncle

Mo colt are tentative, Sherlock said Uncle Lino will get

rest before returning in the winter for a possible run

in the Malibu (gr. I). BH

outside in the stretch, but lost momentum mo-

mentarily when Lady Valeur pushed her out in the

stretch and completed the blanketed superfecta a

    neck back in fourth.

Gone to Bali shot to the front early from post 2

and set a quick pace, clicking off fractions of :22.72,

:45.92, and 1:09.96 through six furlongs, as Cheek-

aboo raced in seventh. Stays in Vegas assumed

command in the stretch as Gone to Bali tired, but

after tracking the pace in second the fast pace likely

    took a toll.

Lady Valeur finished fifth, followed by How Unu-

sual, Gone to Bali, Jeremy's Legacy, and Where's the

D, to complete the order of finish.

Owned by Sharon Alesia, Mike Burns, and Ciaglia

Racing, Cheekaoo now has a 3-2-2 record from eight

starts with earnings of $279,680. Bred by Madeline

Auerbach, Richard Rosenberg, and Barry Abrams,

her lone stakes win upon entering the race came in

the Campanile Stakes for California-breds May 1 at

    Golden Gate Fields. BH

CHEEKABOO SURGES TO AN UPSET IN HONEYMOONBy Jeremy Balan

With an expert ride from Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, Cheekaboo broke through for her first graded stakes win in her first start against

open company June 19 in the $200,000 Honeymoon

Stakes (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita Park.

The California-bred daughter of Unusual Heat

had the whole field of 3-year-old fillies ahead of her

exiting the final turn in the 1 1/8-mile grass test, but

Smith kept her on the rail after saving ground in

the bend. She rallied on the inside as other closers

angled out and split favorites Be Mine and Stays in

Vegas in the final strides to get to the wire a head in

front at odds of 23-1 for trainer Peter Eurton.

    "Wasn't that awesome?" Smith said. "I don't

know what it looked like, but it was fun as hell to

ride. I kinda fee like, 'OK, now people can see I can

ride a little bit. I can do more than just hang on to

    Songbird.'

    "I followed Pete

    (Eurton's) instructions,

    almost to a ‘T.’ I saved all

    the ground I could and

    cut every corner, and he

told me to ‘go for broke’

and to see if we could

    get lucky, get through

    or in between. I have

    to give him the credit,"

    Smith said. "At the six-

    teenth pole I thought, 'if

    I can squeeze in between

these two, I think I can

    get it.' "

    Be Mine nosed out

Stays in Vegas for third, a

    start after Stays in Vegas

    edged that rival in the

Patrick Husbands guided in his 3,000th North Ameri-can winner June 18, when Shez a Ten I Know cap-tured her debut in the first race at Woodbine.

Husbands deftly settled the 2-year-old Court Vision

filly after a bump at the start. Showing speed, she won

    the 4 1/2-furlong race by 3 1/2 lengths under a hand

Husbands, a Barbados native, is an eight-time Sover-

he moved to Canada, where he's had great success,

"The smartest horse I ever rode was Wando. He was

unbelievable," Husbands said. "In post parade, he'd

SONGBIRD SEEKS CHALLENGERS IN THE EASTBy Jeremy Balan

One of the equine jewels of the West Coast will be taking her undefeated record to the East for the summer.

A day after she had her way with an overmatched

field in her fourth consecutive start at Santa Anita

Park, owner Rick Porter decided Songbird needs to

take it to the other top fillies in her division. He's laid

out a campaign that likely includes the July 24 Coach-

ing Club American Oaks (gr. I) and Aug. 20 Alabama

Stakes (gr. I)—both at Saratoga Race Course—fol-

lowed by Sept. 24 Cotillion Stakes (gr. I) at Parx Racing

and the Breeders' Cup back at Santa Anita.

Porter said he is "almost positive" the $300,000

CCA Oaks will be Songbird's next start but didn't rule

out the July 7 Delaware Oaks (gr. III), which carries the

    same purse at Delaware Park.

"That's the plan right now," Porter said. "The

timing is better for the American Oaks and every-

body wants us to run against Carina Mia and Cathryn

Sophia, and we want to run against them too."

In her eight victories, including seven graded wins

and four grade I victories, Songbird has yet to field a

NY LAWMAKERS SEND WARNING ON CASINOSBy Tom Precious

One of the last acts of the New York legislature before its 2016 session ended June 18 was to send a message to one of its neighbors: New York

is poised to act if New Jersey moves to build casinos

    near the New York border.

The retaliation, according to a joint resolution

adopted by the Senate and Assembly, would likely

include stepping up the timetable envisioned for ad-

ditional casinos. The resolution didn't state precisely

where new casinos might go, but lawmakers said

New York City would be a prime market location to

compete with casinos built across the Hudson River

    in northern New Jersey.

At issue is whether voters in New Jersey in a state-

wide referendum this fall agree to amend their con-

stitution to permit the construction of two casinos in

the northern part of the state; Meadowlands, owned

by Jeff Gural, is one of the sites being considered.

The resolution approved by New York lawmakers

notes "the importance of protecting New York State's

gaming market," as well as the revenue state govern-

ment gets from casinos and racetracks, and warned

"against dilution resulting from new gaming competi-

    tion in neighboring states."

Lawmakers said the warning shot has a chief

intended target: private financiers considering in-

vestments in potential New Jersey casinos. New York

officials believe investors in New Jersey might be

scared off if officials on the east side of the Hudson

River were to also permit casinos in such population

    centers as Manhattan.

The theory is New York residents or tourists

staying in Manhattan will have no desire to travel to

New Jersey if there is a casino in Manhattan or one of

the other boroughs. The strategy, though, has some

    unanswered questions.

For starters, New York can award three addition-

al casino licenses in seven years, including the New

York City area. The long time period was built into a

2013 law to give four upstate casinos a chance to get

    off the ground.

Three upstate casinos are now under construc-

tion, and one, near Monticello, could face serious

competition if northern New Jersey or New York City

    casinos are opened.

If New York violates the terms of the 2013 law,

the state would have to pay the upstate casinos $50

million each; one of the four would get slightly less.

The newly adopted resolution is aimed at pro-

tecting video lottery terminal casinos that are

attached to Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens and

Yonkers Raceway in Westchester County, as well as

the under-construction Montreign Resort Casino in

Sullivan County in the southern Catskill Mountains.

The resolution approved by New York lawmak-

ers notes the new upstate casinos will generate

$430 million in annual economic benefits once

open, which includes $238 million in state tax rev-

enue. "This revenue stream is vitally important to

New York state's economic future," the resolution

    states. BH

FRENCH CLASSIC DOUBLE FOR LA CRESSONNIEREBy Myra Lewyn

Unbeaten La Cressonniere sealed a classic double June 19 when she captured the Prix de Diane Longines (Fr-I, French Oaks) at Chantilly.

The victress in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches

(French One Thousand Guineas, Fr-I) in May, the

daughter of Le Havre was brought from near the

back of the field with a strong run. She took com-

mand nearing the furlong marker and won by a half-

    length from Left Hand.

Ridden by Cristian Demuro for trainer Jean-Claude

Rouget, La Cressonniere covered 2,100 meters (about

1 5/16 miles) in 2:09.45 on soft turf.

Prix de Sandringham (Fr-II) winner Volta finished

third in the drama-filled race, but La Cressonniere

avoided trouble with a wide outside run, winning for

    the seventh time.

"She is incredible," Demuro told Racing Post. "I said

to myself at one stage we were too far back, but I

know her by heart and I knew she could do it."

Trouble began inside the final quarter-mile, when

Armande clipped heels with Highlands Queen and

fell in midpack, and Tierra Del Fuego was pulled up

entering the home straight, Racing Post reported.

After a stewards' inquiry, ninth-place finisher High-

lands Queen, ridden by William Buick, was deemed

the cause of interference, disqualified, and placed

    last.

La Cressonniere provided Rouget his fourth

French Oaks triumph. Earlier this month he captured

the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby, Fr-I) with Al-

manzor and previously scored a French Derby/Oaks

double in 2009 with Le Havre and Stacelita.

La Cressonniere is the second French Oaks/French

Guineas winner for Le Havre following Avenir Certain

    in 2014.

"I don't want to say anything about where next,

we'll see how she is over the next few days," Rouget

    said.

Saturday's classic marked the second top-level

victory in three days for the trainer, who took the

Coronation Stakes (Eng-I) with Qemah June 17 at

    Royal Ascot.

La Cressonniere is owned by Ecurie Antonio Caro

and Gerard Augustin-Normand, also the owners of

Almanzor. Bred in France by Franklin Finance, she is

out of the Galileo mare Absolute Lady, a full sister to

a Monmouth Park stakes winner Paris Winds, who

    was group-placed in Ireland. BH

    ANALYSIS

PINHOOKERS TAKE MAJOR HIT AT OBS SALEBy Ron Mitchell

To those involved in or observing the June 14-17 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s 2-year-olds in train-ing sale, it was obvious pinhookers—those specula-

tors who buy weanlings or yearlings and offer them

at juvenile sales—took a big hit.

    Data from Blood-Horse’s MarketWatch shows

that 462 of the 837 horses offered at the sale had

been previous purchases at public auction, and

of the 637 sold, the 346 that had been purchased

for an average price of $33,059 sold at OBS for an

    average of $32,285.

After deducting the sales company's 5% com-

mission from the final purchase price to arrive at a

net price, and then subtracting the consignors’ total

investment costs (previous sale price plus upkeep

estimated at $20,000 from yearling to 2-year-old

and $27,000 for weanling to 2-year-old) resulted in

a negative 43% return on investment for the entire

    group of OBS pinhooks.

By category, from the 38 weanling-to-juvenile

pinhooks at OBS (with 10 additional RNAs), only

eight were profitable. The 308 yearling-to-juvenile

pinhook transactions resulted in 43 profitable and

265 that were not, with 106 RNAs in this category.

As the last 2-year-olds in training sale of the

year, the OBS auction represented the final oppor-

tunity for pinhookers to move their stock; other-

wise, they hope their clients have racing stables to

    accommodate those unsold.

At the earlier 2-year-old sales some horses were

bought back because there were additional oppor-

tunities to sell. However, without that luxury this

time, many of the OBS horses were sold at a loss

    rather than being held onto.

An Uncle Mo—Surrender colt produced the

largest OBS ROI of 338.4%. Bred in New York by

Fred W. Hertrich III, the colt previously was pur-

chased for $32,000 by Thoroughbred Champions

Training Center from the Taylor Made Sales Agency

consignment to the 2015 Keeneland September

yearling sale, and bought back for $145,000 at the

OBS March sale. Purchased at OBS by Breeze Easy

for $240,000, the colt generated a $176,000 profit.

Second-highest ROI of 322% came from a Qual-

ity Road—Inish Glora colt bought by Alistair Roden

Bloodstock for $160,000 from the Wavertree con-

signment of Ciaran Dunne, agent. Bill Rights had

purchased the colt for $16,000 from the Mill Ridge

consignment to last year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky

fall yearling sale. With total investment of an esti-

mated $36,000, the net price of $152,000 produced

an estimated profit of $116,000. BH
