LATEST HEADLINES FROM BLOODHORSE.COMSONGBIRD BACK FOR SUMMERTIME OAKS A low-grade fever may have knocked Fox Hill Farms' undefeated champion Songbird out of the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), but her 3-year-old campaign will restart June 18 in the $200,000 Summertime Oaks (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park.

EFFINEX DRAWS POST 3 IN STEPHEN FOSTER Effinex, who last year won the Clark Handicap presented by Norton Healthcare (gr. I) at Churchill Downs, will look to add to his legacy there June 18 when he takes on six rivals in the $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I).

AVIOLI TO FILL NEW CEO POSITION FOR TOC Greg Avioli, who has served as a senior adviser to the Thoroughbred Owners of California board of directors, has been named to the new post of chief executive officer of the organization effective July 16.

THE PIZZA MAN TOPS WISE DAN Ever-popular The Pizza Man, winner of last year's Arlington Million (gr. IT), returns to Churchill Downs for the June 18 Wise Dan Stakes (gr. IIT). The race goes under the lights with an approximate post of 9:05 p.m.

half-furlong, it was clear no one was going to catch

her.

"We always knew she was special from the

time we broke her at the farm in Ocala," said John

Moynihan, Stonestreet's bloodstock adviser. "It

was an amazing race and we were certainly wor-

ried about the rain and the soft ground they had,

but she powered through it and we were ecstatic.

"She ran an unbelievable race on ground that

probably doesn't suit her, and I really don't know

what kind of performance she would have run on

faster ground."

The acclaim for Ward's latest Royal Ascot vic-

tor—his third in the Queen Mary, and arguably his

most impressive to date—continued to roll in from

her connections.

Dettori said: "To win a sprint by seven lengths

at Royal Ascot, I've never seen anything like that—

especially from a 2-year-old. When I got to the

furlong and a half (pole), I asked her to go, and she

found another gear. I was completely shocked.

"Unbelievable, she's a lovely filly. Well done to

Wesley; he's a master of the sprinters."

Ward said Lady Aurelia may stay in Europe for

the summer, but that will be determined after

talking to the owners. Possible targets include the

Darley Prix Morny (Fr-I).

Moynihan said: "There's a chance she will be

left in Europe and a chance she will come back to

the U.S. The fact that she performed so well on

ground that didn't suit her means Europe will be a

consideration."

He added that for now they are just enjoying the

victory, saying it was definitely one to savor. BH

SALES UPDATE

CASSE SECURES WAR FRONT FILLYBy Ron Mitchell

It took a bid made via a transatlantic phone call

from Royal Ascot to give the Ocala Breeders’

Sales Co. a much-needed spark during the June 15

second session of the 2-year-olds in training and

horses of racing age sale as Justin Casse, acting as

agent, secured a War Front filly for $425,000.

Though the War Front filly and two other big

transactions Wednesday produced prices in ex-

cess of the opening-day highest price, it still did

little to boost the overall totals that continue to

be well behind last year.

After two days, 292 horses were sold for a total

$8,490,700, with the average down 21.8% to $29,078

from $37,181 a year ago when 309 head grossed

$11,488,900. This year’s cumulative median is

$15,000, compared with $19,000 in 2015. The cumu-

lative RNA rate is 29.6%, which will be adjusted after

post-sale private transactions are tallied by OBS.

For the second session, OBS reported 146 hors-

es sold for $4,828,400, an average of $33,071 and a

median of $15,500. Those numbers are down from

last year’s gross of $5,931,300 for 158 head, with an

average of $37,540 and a $20,000 median.

“We made up some ground today,” OBS sales

director Tod Wojciechowski said. “We’re still off a

little but there are still two more days of selling

with quality horses both days.”

Casse, an OBS regular consignor and buyer,

was present when the War Front filly breezed an

eighth-mile during the under tack show in :10,

the co-second-fastest time during the six days of

workouts. Casse then went to England where his

brother, trainer Mark Casse, saddled Tepin to win

the Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I) on Royal Ascot's

opening day June 14, which coincided with the

OBS sale’s first session.

“She was our pick of the sale,” Casse said.

The second-highest price of the day—and the

first two days of the auction—of $370,000 was

paid by Nick Hines, agent, for an undisclosed new

owner for Hip 484, a Candy Ride colt produced

from a full sister to grade III winner Great War

Eagle and whose second dam is Breeders’ Cup

Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) winner Cash Run.

Bloodstock agent Michel Everett, representing

California owner Martha Dugan, bought an Uncle

Mo colt for $350,000. Consigned as Hip 476 by

Classic Bloodstock, the colt bred in Kentucky by

Betz/Kidder/Lamantia had been bought by Chris

Drakos for $100,000 from the Betz Thoroughbreds

consignment at the Keeneland yearling sale.

While the three high-priced transactions on

the day were a welcome boost for the sale, the

lower and middle markets languished. As the fi-

nal juvenile sale of the year, some consignors let

their 2-year-olds go at a loss at the OBS sale and

re-stock at the fall yearling sales.

“It’s extremely unhealthy when so many of

the consignors are losing money,” buyer Jerry

O’Meara said.

“There is no one here,” said consignor Ciaran

Dunne of Wavertree Stables. BH

TAPIT COLT HIGHLIGHTS DAY 3 OF OBS SALEBy Ron Mitchell

The final 2-year-old by leading sire Tapit at the

Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s 2-year-olds in train-

ing and horses of racing age sale is scheduled to go

through the ring during the June 16 third session.

Consigned as Hip 761 by de Meric Sales, the colt

is out of grade I winner River's Prayer (Devon Lane),

who won nine of 16 starts and earned $921,958. In

addition to the grade I Princess Rooney Handicap,

the mare won two grade III stakes, including the

Rancho Bernardo Handicap in track record time of

1:17 4/5 for 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar.

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred

Holdings, the colt was purchased by Safari Blood-

stock for $240,000 at the Keeneland September

yearling sale from the consignment of Summer-

field, agent for Stonestreet Bred and Raised.

"He is by the leading sire and is a big, strong

colt who is light on his feet," Tristan de Meric said.

Also Thursday, de Meric has a Midnight Lute

filly out of the family of champion Personal

Ensign and grade I winner Personal Flag.

Produced from the stakes-winning Johan-

nesburg mare Private Dreams, the filly, con-

signed as Hip 710, was bred in Kentucky by Hill

'n' Dale Equine Holdings, Jerry Hollendorfer,

et al. and was bought by Bowling Hines for

$32,000 from the Hill 'n' Dale offerings at the

Keeneland yearling sale.

"She comes from a top family and is a very

precocious, sound filly with no issues," de

Meric said.

The third OBS session also includes an Into

Mischief filly Gainesway purchased for $230,000

from the Select Sales consignment at the 2015

Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August yearling sale.

Bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall, Hip 866

offered by Eisaman Equine hails from Simple

Symphony, a Consolidator half sister to stakes

winners Doc Calls Her Kate and My Lady Avie.

Hip 668, a Tale of Ekati filly named Ekatitalk-

stoomuch, is out of stakes-placed Perfect Paula,

a Songandaprayer mare who produced multiple

stakes-placed Senna (Tale of Ekati). Bred in

Kentucky by Extern Developments, the filly was

bought by Vista Creek Stables for $27,000 from Sum-

merfield Farm at the 2015 OBS August yearling sale.

"She's very sharp and worked very well," con-

signor Niall Brennan said of the filly that breezed

an eighth in :10 1/5. "She's a balanced filly who

gets around the track well." BH

SCAT DADDY TO THE FORE AT ROYAL ASCOTBy Tom Hall

The magic number for the late Scat Daddy this year

at Royal Ascot is two: two days, and two 2-year-old

group II winners.

Adding to the splendid display of Caravaggio in the

June 14 Coventry Stakes, fellow Kentucky-bred Lady

Aurelia turned in a more scintillating performance,

devouring the five-furlong trip before her rivals had

finished the appetizer.

Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Lady

Aurelia is out of multiple grade I winner D' Wildcat

Speed, champion 3-year-old filly and Horse of the

Year in Puerto Rico before coming to the States and

adding the grade II Rampart Handicap. As her name

implies, she is a daughter of the very speedy Forest

Wildcat, who like Scat Daddy's grandsire Hennessy

is a son of Storm Cat, thus giving Lady Aurelia a 4x3

cross to the seven-time leading juvenile sire.

Lady Aurelia's female family traces to blue hen Af-

fection, whose line gave rise to two Kentucky Brood-

mares of the Year (Levee, Delta). Coincidentally,

Daddy Long Legs, a son of Scat Daddy who won the

group II Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmar-

ket in 2011, also traces in tail female to Affection.

Lady Aurelia's seven-length

victory gave trainer Wesley

Ward his second consecutive

Queen Mary win; both have

been with daughters of the

late Scat Daddy. Last year

Acapulco took the Wednes-

day special for the Coolmore

contingent. The turf courses of

Royal Ascot have been kind to

the offspring of Scat Daddy as

Ward trained No Nay Never to

win the Norfolk Stakes during

the 2013 meet.

The Jersey Stakes (Eng-III)

belonged to Ribchester, who

carried the Godolphin colors

to their first of three wins on

Wednesday's card. Although

Irish-bred, he has some Ken-

tucky kinfolk rifling through his

pedigree. His sire, British-bred

Iffraaj, raced as a homebred for the Maktoum family

and brings his group II-winning credentials to the

Darley sire roster.

Iffraj's sire Zafonic (59 stakes winners), bred in

Kentucky by Juddmonte Farms, is a full brother to Za-

mindar, who sired some pretty good Euro lassies in

Zenda, Coquerelle, Darjina, Zarkava, and Timepiece.

Ribchester's dam Mujarah is a fourth-generation

descendant of Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Fall

Aspen.

The group I Prince of Wales's Stakes over 10 fur-

longs fell to My Dreamboat, a 4-year-old son of the

Kentucky-bred Lord Shanakill, who stands at the Irish

National Stud. Winner of the Etihad Airways Prix Jean

Prat (Fr-I), Lord Shanakill is by the versatile Speight-

stown, whose offspring can win at the highest level

over a range of distances and surfaces.

My Dreamboat's broodmare sire Choisir had an

additional stakes winner as broodmare sire on the

day with Persuasive (Dark Angel) in the listed San-

dringham Handicap.

Godolphin's Irish-bred Usherette, a 4-year-old

daughter of Shamardal (Giant's Causeway) out of the

Maria's Mon mare Monday Show, showed her heels

to the Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Eng-II) field. BH

'EMPIRE' CONNECTION TO OUTWORK DEALBy Eric Mitchell

WinStar Farm and Woodford Thoroughbreds'

June 15 announcement of a breeding rights

deal with Repole Stable's homebred runner Outwork

brings a third stallion with ties to Empire Maker to

WinStar.

Kenny Troutt's Central Kentucky farm near Ver-

sailles already stands Empire Maker's sons Pioneer-

of the Nile, sire of Triple Crown winner American

Pharoah, and first-crop sire Bodemeister, who ranks

second among freshman sires through June 15.

Outwork, a son of Uncle Mo, is out of the Empire

Maker mare Nonna Mia, who was also raced by Mike

Repole. Nonna Mia placed in two graded stakes,

the grade I Frizette Stakes and the grade III Tempt-

ed Stakes. She has produced two foals to race and

both have earned black type. Her first, Nonna's Boy,

placed in two black-type stakes and won a non-black-

type stakes at Monmouth Park in 2015. The colt is

still racing.

"I like the influence of Empire Maker in a pedigree,

whether it is top or bottom," said Elliott Walden, pres-

ident and chief executive officer of WinStar. "I love

Outwork's pedigree because it is extremely live. With

the combination of Uncle Mo and Empire Maker, I am

super excited."

Both Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher said Out-

work is similar in a several ways to his sire, whom

Repole raced and Pletcher conditioned.

"To win a grade I and a classic prep in only his

fourth lifetime start showed the heart of his sire line,"

Pletcher said. "He reminds me of Uncle Mo in so

many ways, most notably by his looks, his class, and

his ability."

Repole Stable will continue to campaign Outwork

through the remainder of his racing career, before

retiring to WinStar's operation. The colt is being

freshened for a summer return in New York—likely

the one-mile, $500,000 Dwyer Stakes (gr. III) July 9 at

Belmont Park.

"We have enjoyed great success with Congrats

at WinStar, and are excited to partner with them on

Outwork," said John Sykes of Woodford Thorough-

breds. "We look forward to supporting Outwork with

our quality broodmare band."

Outwork became Uncle Mo's first winner last

year, taking his 4 1/2-fur-

long Keeneland debut

in April by 2 1/4 lengths.

This year at 3, Outwork

made his first start

around two turns in the

Lambholm South Tampa

Bay Derby (gr. II), yielding

late to stablemate and

recent Belmont Stakes

Presented by NYRA Bets

(gr. I) runner-up Destin

to finish a length back in

second. The colt followed

that performance with

his first stakes win in the

Wood Memorial Stakes

(gr. I). In the Wood he

overcame a contentious

pace and wide trip, run-

ning 42 feet farther than

the runner-up, according

to Trakus, and earned a 1

1/2 from Thoro-Graph. BHCHAD

TASTY PROSPECTS FOR AHH CHOCOLATEBy Lenny Shulman

Ahh Chocolate seems to have everything going for

her heading into the $200,000 Fleur de Lis Hand-

icap (gr. II) June 18 at Churchill Downs. The nine-fur-

long test for fillies and mares 3 and up drew a short

field of six, and Ahh Chocolate should be perfectly

placed just off the pace.

Coming off a sharp score in the May 20 Allaire

Dupont Distaff (gr. III) at Pimlico Race Course, Ahh

Chocolate stalked and defeated next-out winner

Theogony. The Neil Howard trainee is also proven

at Churchill, where she has won two of three starts

with one second, including a score in last year's Falls

City Handicap (gr. II). Both the Falls City and

Dupont were run at nine furlongs.

Drawing the rail is champion Untapa-

ble, the best 3-year-old filly in the land

two years ago. Although she remains

competitive, Untapable must be con-

sidered in decline, having dropped six

consecutive decisions since winning the

Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I) in 2015.

The last start for the Steve Asmus-

sen-trained runner came in this year's

edition of the Apple Blossom back in April,

in which she set soft fractions early on yet

still faltered late at 1 1/16 miles, coming

home fourth. Optimists will point to her

losing by less than a length in a pair of

grade I contests last year and by a neck in

the Azeri (gr. II) in March, and also at the

fact she is perfect in three starts at Church-

ill, although those victories came early in

her career. She should again find herself

on the lead in the Fleur de Lis, but needs to

rediscover her winning touch late.

Brooklynsway can take comfort in hav-

ing defeated Ahh Chocolate in April at 25-1

at Keeneland in the Doubledogdare Stakes

(gr. III) after finishing behind that one in the

Esplanade in March. Since that win, she has

come up empty in the La Troienne (gr. I) at

Churchill and checked in third in the Arling-

ton Matron (gr. III) after stumbling at the

start. She hasn't shown an affinity for nine

furlongs thus far.

Engaginglee will be tested for class. The closer

may not get the early speed battle that would set up

her late run, and she also must prove she can run

with this kind after finishing 6 1/2 lengths in arrears

of Ahh Chocolate in the Dupont.

Paid Up Subscriber comes in off a mile allow-

ance optional claiming score at Churchill, but her

stakes tries haven't been much. She is two-for-two at

Churchill.

California invader Big Book shows a similar pat-

tern. She comes in off an allowance optional claiming

win at Santa Anita but was pitched too high in the

Zenyatta Stakes (gr. I), finishing 9 3/4 lengths in back

of Beholder. BH

RACES to watch

CALIFORNIA CHROME'S JUVENILE SISTER TO DEBUTBy Alastair Bull

As California Chrome gears up for his return to

racing, his 2-year-old full sister will try to enhance

the family's reputation at Santa Anita Park June 16.

R Sunday Surprise debuts in a five-furlong maiden

special weight for California-bred 2-year-old fillies

in Santa Anita's first race as the 5-2 morning-line

favorite. She worked three furlongs at Santa Anita

June 6 in :35 3/5 (third of 28 at the distance), and the

same distance a week later in :36 1/5 (third of 12).

California Chrome’s ex-

ploits are well known—a dual

classic winner and Horse of

the Year who won the Dubai

World Cup Sponsored by

Emirate Airline (UAE-I) this

year. He is set to return in

Del Mar’s San Diego Handi-

cap (gr. II) July 23.

R Sunday Surprise is the

third foal out of Love the

Chase (Not For Love). Love

the Chase was a winner at

3, as was her dam, Chase it

Down (Polish Numbers). Her

third dam, Chase the Dream,

was twice a stakes winner

and graded stakes-placed.

She has been bred exclusive-

ly to Lucky Pulpit.

Love the Chase’s second

foal, the filly Hope’s Love, has

raced five times, all at Golden Gate Fields. Second in

her debut last year, she has failed to run closer than

fifth in four starts this year.

Bred by Perry Martin and Steve Coburn, R Sunday

FLARES IN ROYAL ASCOT HISTORYBy Tom Hall

First run in 1807, the Ascot Gold Cup will be contest-

ed June 16 in honor of the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Fittingly, the Queen’s 4-year-old Monsun filly Esti-

mate won the 2013 edition, becoming the first horse

belonging to a reigning monarch to win the Gold Cup.

The marathon event is contested over 20 furlongs

and certainly is not for the short of breath or for the

weak in spirit. Master Jackey won the inaugural run-

ning and in the 200-odd years since, only four Ameri-

can-breds have won the Gold Cup.

The first was James R. Keene’s Foxhall in 1882.

Keene bought the Woodburn Stud-bred son of King

Alfonso as a yearling and named him for his son.

Sent to Europe, Foxhall (the horse) developed into

one of the best horses of his day, winning in addi-

tion to the Gold Cup, such prestigious events as the

Grand Prix de Paris and the Cesarewitch Handicap.

Eventually retired to stud in England, he was not a

success.

Not until 1938 did another U.S.-bred horse win

the crown jewel of the Royal Ascot meet. That year

William Woodward, who

owned the famous red pol-

ka-dotted silks belonging to

Belair Stud, saw his 5-year-old

stallion Flares stand as the

winner.

A son of 1930 Triple Crown

winner Gallant Fox out of the

Wrack mare Flambino, Flares

was a full brother to 1935 Tri-

ple Crown winner Omaha, also

bred and owned by Wood-

ward.

Unlike Flares, who foaled in

Maryland, home of Belair Stud,

Omaha was born at Claiborne

Farm in Kentucky. Follow-

ing his Triple Crown season,

Omaha was transferred to

England with one special goal,

to become the second Amer-

ican-bred winner of Ascot’s

Gold Cup.

A throng of 150,000 or so gathered for the big

race to see the gallant Omaha lose by a head to the

filly Quashed, who quashed Woodward’s dream of

Ascot gold.

Two years later Omaha’s little brother avenged the

loss.

Flares returned to the U.S. to stand as a stallion.

While not a raging success, Flares did sire a stallion

of some worth who ended up in the Canadian Hall of

Fame.

A foal of 1940, Chop Chop became a successful

stallion and a cornerstone for the fledgling stud of

leading Canadian breeder E.P. Taylor. Chop Chop

was the leading sire in Canada from 1959-1963 and a

leading broodmare sire.

One of Chop Chop’s best daughters was Cibou-

lette, who produced six stakes winners, among them

U.S. and Canadian champion Fanfreluche. From

Ciboulette have descended such successful stallions

as Flying Spur and Holy Roman Emperor.

Another daughter, Shining Sun, is the dam of South

Ocean, whose son Storm Bird has become a familiar

and important name in pedigrees mostly as the sire of

Storm Cat, whose granddaughter Littleprincessemma

produced Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. BH

LAWMAKERS PASS NYRA LEGISLATION, DEFY CUOMOBy Tom Precious

Defying Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York lawmak-

ers June 15 gave final approval to legislation that

would return the New York Racing Association to

private control after a four-year period in which the

organization's board of directors was dominated by

appointees of the governor.

The matter, though, is far from resolved, as the

legislature is scheduled to end its 2016 session June

16. The session could extend through June 17.

Several key lawmakers said they won't support

a bill introduced by Cuomo that gives him sizeable

influence over a new NYRA board and would cap the

annual revenue NYRA receives from video lottery

terminals at Aqueduct Racetrack. Lawmakers said

the Cuomo proposal amounts to a $14 million to $16

million a year reduction in revenue.

On the table, lawmakers said, is a plan to extend

the current board structure for another year. Without

it, they claim NYRA would face a governance crisis

when the term for the existing NYRA board expires

later this fall.

Cuomo in 2012 pushed through a plan to give him

control of a majority of board appointees. The As-

sembly and Senate June 15 passed a bill that creates

a 15-member board, with two appointees by the

governor; one each by the heads of the Senate and

Assembly; one each by the New York Thoroughbred

Horsemen's Association and New York Thoroughbred

Breeders; and eight selected by the executive com-

mittee of the current NYRA board. The 15th member

would be the NYRA president.

"Let him veto it and then we'll deal with the one-

year extender," said Sen. John Bonacic, chairman of

the Senate Racing, Wagering and Gaming Committee.

Bonacic said he expects a one-year NYRA extender

bill to emerge and be approved before lawmakers end

the session. He called the Cuomo plan to cap VLT pro-

ceeds to NYRA "not acceptable to the racing industry,"

which he said supports the one-year plan as a way to

block Cuomo's proposal from being adopted.

The Cuomo administration has said its plan is

needed to give the state a role in NYRA's future and

to provide "reasonable public safeguards befitting a

private, not-for-profit corporation charged with fulfill-

ing an entirely public mission." BH

FIRST GROUP I WINNER FOR POUR MOIBy Tara Madgwick

A champagne day of racing at Eagle Farm June 11

produced varied results, with the favorites in

three of four group I events finishing unplaced and

the fourth won as expected by New Zealand-bred

2-year-old Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi).

Trained in New Zealand by Tony Pike, Sacred Elixir

was a hot favorite and won the 1,600-meter BMW JJ

Atkins Stakes (Aus-I) by 3 1/2 lengths, stamping him-

self as a Derby prospect for next season.

A NZ$170,000 ($126,242) New Zealand Bloodstock

premier yearling sale purchase for Raffles Racing/ Mul-

caster Bloodstock, Sacred Elixir is the first group I win-

ner for his Investec Epsom Derby (Eng-I)-winning sire

Pour Moi (Montjeu), who shuttles to Windsor Park Stud

in Cambridge, New Zealand, from Coolmore Ireland.

Sacred Elixir is the first foal of Baltika (Stravinsky),

a granddaughter of champion mare Horlicks, who

scored a record-breaking win in the 1989 Japan Cup.

Pike landed a group I double, taking the 2,400-meter

Treasury Casino & Hotel Queensland Oaks with Pro-

vocative, who became the 45th group I winner for her

legendary sire Zabeel, who died last year.

The remaining group I events were won by Under

The Louvre (Excellent Art), successful in the Aami Strad-

broke Handicap (1,400 meters), and Eagle Way (More

Than Ready) in the Channel 7 Queensland Derby. BH

NINETEEN ELECTED TO BREEDERS' CUP BOARDBy Blood-Horse Staff

Ten individuals were re-elected and nine others

were elected for the first time to seats on the

board of Breeders' Cup members June 13, the organi-

zation announced June 15.

The members—39 total on the board—are elected

by Breeders' Cup foal and stallion nominators. Breed-

ers' Cup officials said the results of the online voting

are expected to be ratified at the annual meeting

scheduled for July 13.

The 10 re-elected members are Barbara Banke,

Doug Cauthen, Andreas Jacobs, W. Bruce Lunsford,

Clem Murphy, Maria Niarchos-Gouaze, Bill Oppen-

heim, J. David Richardson, W. Elliott Walden, and

Barry Weisbord. They received the most votes along

with Boyd Browning, Carlos Heller, Sol Kumin, David

O'Farrell, Mike Rogers, Bernie Sams, Alex Solis II, Oli-

ver Tait, and Aron Wellman.

There were 30 candidates for the 19 seats.

"This class of new and returning members repre-

sents some of the finest individuals in the Thorough-

bred industry," Breeders' Cup chairman Bill Farish

said. "We look forward to utilizing their valuable

knowledge and expertise in the growth and enhance-

ment of the Breeders' Cup program."

The Breeders' Cup board of directors is comprised

of 13 people; three seats are open this year. That

election will begin July 7 and end July 13 at the annual

meeting. BH

INDUSTRYANALYSIS

SQUEEZE PLAY IN CROWDED REGION

Is this glass half full or half empty?

Given that the annual North American Thor-

oughbred foal crop has dropped about 9,000

between 2009 and 2015, it's borderline remark-

able 10 tracks in six contiguous states in the

closely knit Mid-Atlantic and Northeast currently

offer live racing.

What's not surprising, however, is only one

averages more than eight horses per race while

three average less

than seven. It's a

lucrative scenario

for owners, breed-

ers, and trainers,

but not so much for

those who generate

pari-mutuel handle.

From May 1

through mid-June, the

10 racetracks paid

$66.27 million in purs-

es over a combined

219 racing programs,

according to The Jock-

ey Club Information Systems statistics. Belmont

Park accounted for 40.5% of total purses during

the period, but the overall average for the region

was $302,616, a pretty healthy number.

The average number of horses per race isn't

as healthy. Field size for the 10 facilities aver-

aged 7.27, from a high of 8.14 at Pimlico Race

Course in Maryland to a low of 6.45 at Finger

Lakes Gaming & Racetrack in upstate New York.

Finger Lakes during this period canceled one

program due to lack of entries. The facility, which

has no turf course, is scheduled to race five days

a week from May through mid-November.

Three Pennsylvania tracks—Parx Racing, Hol-

lywood Casino at Penn National Race Course,

and Presque Isle Downs & Casino—overlap

dates from late May through the end of Septem-

ber. From May 1 through mid-June, they com-

bined for 66 racing programs and total purses of

$15.98 million for a $242,249 per-card average.

The average doesn't include another

$800,000 in bonuses for Pennyslvania-breds in

open races at the three tracks.

Average field size for the three Pennsylvania

tracks was 7.10, with Parx highest at 7.33.

The only track among the 10 that doesn't

have a casino or receive purse supplements from

gaming is Monmouth Park in New Jersey. But the

track had the fourth-highest average daily purse

distribution at $298,646 and was third-highest by

average field size at 7.36.

The purse leaders for

the period both hosted

Triple Crown events; Bel-

mont averaged $929,301

per day in purses,

while Pimlico averaged

$435,511.

It would be foolish to

expect a sizable jump

in average field size this

summer. However, Mar-

yland will cut from four

days a week to three

when Laurel Park opens

in July, and Hollywood Casino at Charles Town

Races, in an attempt to maintain purse levels,

will race three nights a week instead of four in

July and August. BH
