You will experience no physical pain; you will have nothing less in your home."

Religious Education... John Markiewicz, a catechist for our Religious Education program, broke out the fire-pit to teach 8th grade students how to create ashes for Ash Wednesday. Blessed palm branches from last year's Palm Sunday are gathered and burned to create the ashes which are then distributed to mark the foreheads of the faithful on Ash Wednesday.

Sunday Gospel Reflection: Matthew 4.1-11
On this First Sunday of Lent, we hear Matthew’s version of Jesus’ temptation in the desert. After He has been baptized by John the Baptist, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the desert, where He is tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus faces three fundamental temptations that are experienced by all people in all times and places (including us): to pursue pleasure, pride, and power apart from the will and plan of God the Father. Jesus experiences these temptations as deeply as any other human being. He ultimately decides not to pursue pleasure, pride, or power apart from the will and plan of His Father. As we enter into this first full week of Lent, our goal is not merely to accumulate a daily list of sins avoided and holy actions taken. Much more than that, our goal is to understand more honestly and deeply the dynamics of our decisions. How is it that I pursue pleasure apart from the truth of God? How is it that I place myself at the center of reality (pride), giving in to this temptation rather than seeking the way of God, who is the center of reality? How do I pursue power on terms other than God’s in my daily choices? The more I understand the dynamics behind my choices, the more I understand myself . . . and hopefully make longer-term decisions of true conversion. In the week ahead, are you willing to be more attentive to the ways in which you face the temptations of pursuing pleasure, pride, and power apart from the will, truth, and plan of God? Speak to God about this.
This reflection on the Sunday Gospel is provided in the "Lent Guide 2020" fromCor Unum's One Heart Lent Program. For the complete guide, visit CorUnumMealCenter.org.

Lent Journey with us...
Evening Prayer and Reconciliation - Wednesdays in Lent, beginning March 4th, Evening Prayer from
the beautiful Liturgy of the Hours, is held in St. Augustine Church at 6:15 PM. This is followed by the
opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation until 7:30 PM.
Adoration - Cardinal Sean has declared a Year of the Eucharist (which begins Holy Thursday, April
9th) in order to bolster the faith of those who already believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the
Eucharist and to encourage those who struggle with this belief. In preparation for this celebratory
year, our Lenten program center on the Eucharist. Join us on any (or all!) Wednesday evenings in Fr.
Smith Hall in the parish center for an informative video about the Eucharist followed by Adoration
and quiet reflection. Wednesdays, March 4th - April 1st, 6:30-7:45 PM.
Contemplative Rosary - Enter deeply into prayer with the recitation of this beautiful version of the
Rosary. Reflective music and beautiful icons enhance the experience of praying the Sorrowful
Mysteries, allowing for deeper spiritual reflection. Fridays in Lent at 3 PM in St. Augustine Church.
Stations of the Cross - with roots dating back to the 4th century, the Stations of the
Cross are a popular Christian devotion that re-enact the steps of Jesus' Passion. One
of the most important reasons for making the Stations of the Cross is to contemplate
and enter more deeply into the mystery of Jesus' gift of himself to us. As participants
progress from one station to the next, they pray and reflect on upon each of the
scenes of his Passion and Crucifixion depicted. There are many different "versions"
of the Stations, also called the Way of the Cross, and they may be made publicly or privately, in
church or even at home. The beautiful Stations, located along the interior walls, at St. Augustine are a
gift from the former Sacred Heart Parish in Lawrence. We hold Stations of the Cross every Friday
during Lent, including Good Friday at 7pm in St. Augustine Church. We hope you will join us for this
prayerful devotion.
PARISH-WIDE "ALMSGIVING" - LENTEN SERVICE PROGRAMS
One Heart Project - As a parish-wide almsgiving effort, we have chosen to support the One Heart
program which helps fill the great need of feeding hundreds of hungry people in Lawrence by directly
supporting the Cor Unum Meal Center. This is a simple program in which all family members can
participate - and 100% of your donations go directly to feeding people. Visit
CorUnumMealCenter.org and click on the "One Heart Lent Program" tab for complete info.
Easter Elegance - Our Religious Education program invites all parishioners to join their students in
donating new or nearly-new children’s clothing so that child clients of the Pregnancy Care Center and
Lazarus House Ministries may experience "Easter Sunday Elegance". Donations may be brought to the
parish center from March 1st through April 7th. We welcome donations of new (or nearly new and
in very good condition) clothing for children ages 0 – 16 years especially new socks and new
underwear, baby clothes, boys' shirts and pants, girls' clothing.

Loving Your Church or Loving the Church: The Church Revealed
by the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ
Fr. Ray will speak on the Church—its humanity and journey to Divinity. The Church, in its journey
through time, encompasses both the cross and the resurrection and unless we embrace both, we
achieve neither. Join us for this inspiring and hope-filled evening as we continue our journey through
Lent to the Easter Resurrection. Hosted by St. Augustine's Parish Council.

The Restless Hearts Podcast, hosted by Father Ray Dlugos, Vice President of Mission and Ministry, as well as Director of Campus Ministry at Merrimack College, presents spiritual reflections and conversations about our journey together as human beings. It is inspired by the Augustinian Catholic tradition of understanding the human as both tempted to a life of inauthenticity, but also restless for a heart full of gratitude, humility, compassion, generosity, and love. Featured Ministry Parish Pastoral Council
St. Augustine Parish is blessed to have more than 25 ministries serving our local and extended communities. Each week, a different ministry is featured here. For a complete list and information about each ministry, visit www.staugustineparish.org and contact the listed coordinator. The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) assists the pastor in his leadership role by offering its prayerful advice and guidance. It takes a long-range view of the future needs of the parish and strives to foster unity and a sense of community in the parish. The Council works together with the Pastor to discern the pastoral needs of the parish and ways in which those needs can be addressed. The PPC meets several times a year, meetings are open to all parishioners. The PPC is made up of fifteen members selected from the parishioners at large, and the pastor can appoint additional members as he sees fit. The pastor, parochial vicar, and deacon are ex-officio members . Each year in May, five new members are selected for membership on PPC to serve for a 3-year term. In this way 1/3 of the Council changes each year. Parishioners who are interested or who are nominated by other parishioners to serve on the PPC have their names submitted to the pastor. At the Vigil Mass of Pentecost, five names are drawn from all nominees who have agreed to serve should they be selected.
